"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

As someone mentioned uptrend alot more asylum claims are approved in uk percentage wise than any other European countries which is one of the reasons uk is so attractive.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/08/2023 14:32

@TooBigForMyBoots Absolutely. @Remembermynamealways mentioned about cost of living and tax rises etc likely under labour. Well given the fact that Brexit has contributed to cost rises and occasional supply issues in many imported goods and that Truss managed to crash the market - followed by very large mortgage rate rises and a lack of social housing - then imposing onerous conditions on private rentals and hence creating a housing crisis without a social support network solution first- all I can say is the Tory's themselves have managed to hugely raise the price for existing in the UK- but simply not called it tax rises. They also know quite a large percentage of their support bases aren't as affected by their crappy policies- - either older people with no or low mortgages, wealthy with no or low mortgages and some of those in social housing who believe their anti foreigner rhetoric .

Seymour5 · 09/08/2023 14:35

The asylum system was set up to help people fleeing wars and genocide such as was seen during the holocaust. It is being used by unscrupulous traffickers as a way to buck the system. Look at pictures of refugees, they are old, children, female, male. Not a collection of almost all young, fit men.

Do people really believe they are all genuinely seeking asylum? If so, why do many discard documents? If I was fleeing a war torn country, my passport would prove it.

So before we joined the echr (50 odd years ago) we had no human rights against the state then? What nonsense.

The concept of human rights is very new and was a western reaction to WW2. Of course English people had rights before then, as do people today in countries who ignore the ECHR, and as people will long after such weird 20th century ideas are a distant memory.

No, this is a Tory issue ... they've allowed numbers to grow and grow over the last few years and have sat on their hands

Why have the EU sat on their hands and allowed numbers to grow?

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/08/2023 14:42

The Tories can't even run a political party, nevermind a country. The last Tory PM to serve a full term in office was David Cameron in the Coalition government. After that it was:
Vote Cameron get May.
Vote May get Johnson.
Vote Johnson get Truss.
Then Sunak.
Vote Sunak get ???

Their chaos and hare brained schemes have destroyed our reputation and investability. They couldn't run a bath!

It's down to each country's government, in the UK the Tories have been in power forr 13 years

Anxioys · 09/08/2023 14:56

@Pollyputhekettleon - maybe you could point out these rights that existed before or it may be that you don't know, short of the Magna Carta

I am afraid that’s the crux of the issue.
The system is being completely abused.
I was delighted to set up fundraisers for or Afghan families living in our village. We hosted a Ukrainian student too, but honestly the despicable corruption and danger simply must not carry on under either party.

It'll win votes and that's all that matter to a politician. It's a lesson I've been praying for Labour to re-learn having spectacularly forgotten how to win votes in the last 2 General Elections.

And no, I DON'T care that the number of Labour voters went up. The number of Labour MPs DIDN'T and THAT's the figure that matters.

It's still on the cards that the Labour left could snatch defeat from the jaws of vistory for a third time. Let's face it - it's the only thing they're any good at.

Barbadossunset · 09/08/2023 15:07

ECHR done to try and stop what happened in Nazi Germany in the late 20 and early 30s, where a European state went from a democracy to a dictatorship.

Not perfect but Western Europe hasn't seen this sort of thing happen since.

Alexandra - East Germany? Not many human rights in that regime.

The number of successful asylum claims proves you wrong.

And please tell how a Iranian girl can safely claim asylum here, Braverman couldn’t

The question would be was East Germany a signatory, answer no. But the UK is and has ratified it and placed into domestic law.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/08/2023 15:17

@SgtPercyTwentyman amen to that- I think certain very principled labour voters views that they would rather lose and be in permanent opposition than dare to pander to the middle ground is absolutely nuts given the FPTP system we still have- if the system changes then by all means have a pure socialist party . The fact is if you are in opposition you can be as principled as you want- but do sod all to change things .

The corruption you refer to is much more prevalent in one party than any of the others.

One in 10 Tory peers have given more than £100,000 to party

Exclusive: 27 members of House of Lords have donated almost £50m in total to Conservatives

Deflection (yet again) as we aren't part of the EU & as we are out, our influence on the EU to try and help us out is... a big fat ZERO.

though i do believe France did offer a processing centre in France, which we turned down.

Visitor visa? Then claim asylum? There are also many countries where Iranians can travel to without a visa. Perhaps they might be a better starting point for a legal journey?

To make the UK less attractive?! Surely that correction will happen naturally with a Labour government 😂

CloudyMcCloud · 09/08/2023 15:31

Where does the idea other countries are wanting to help us out come from?

Today more migrant drownings. Do people not think Italy, and the EU have their own issues they’ll face?

Which will continue to ramp up.

Kabbalah · 09/08/2023 15:35

A processing centre in France, staffed by the French, making decisions on who they send on to the UK and who stays in France ?. However
I do remember Boris offering to send our people to stop illegal migrants from leaving French beaches.

Anxioys · 09/08/2023 15:36

I believe the processing centre was to be staffed by British officials. It was turned down because apparently it would attract "migrants"

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2023 15:37

IClaudine** don't worry about the freak exchange. No one is kicking themselves more than me for voting this bunch of incompetent pricks in!

Even my staunch Tory friend who persuaded me when I was unsure if to abstain or vote apologised to me for convincing me it was a good idea!

Why wouldn’t it?

Given people risk their lives now a processing centre is easier to get to

Can you say why numbers wouldn’t increase?
