"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

@TooBigForMyBoots exactly. I was trying to say the same but obviously didn't make my point that well. This is directly from the House of Commons Library

'The annual number of asylum applications to the UK peaked in 2002 at 84,132. After that the number fell sharply to reach a twenty-year low point of 17,916 in 2010. It rose steadily throughout the 2010s, then sharply in 2021 and again in 2022 to reach 74,751 applications, the highest annual number since 2002.'

They think we are all thick AF.

LizzieSiddal · 08/08/2023 15:26

It’s pure Trump.

If the Tory’s do get on next year, and who knows what can happen between now and the election, I really do fear for the people of this country. Absolutely nothing is better than it was 13 years ago when they came in.

mumda · 08/08/2023 15:27

I heard there's a queue to get on the barge since it was announce they have some GP appointments there.

TheShellBeach · 08/08/2023 15:27

Handbagger99 · 08/08/2023 15:24

I agree with him.

Why do you agree with him?

LizzieSiddal · 08/08/2023 15:28

They think we are all thick AF.

I don’t think they think we all are, they know some are and hope that’s enough to get them back in. And they actively hope the non thick ones will argue the toss this creating loads of drama to take away from yeh shit show of this government.

So Churchill is good now? I thought he was a horrible racist whose achievements counted for nothing?
so hard to keep up

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/08/2023 15:31

To hear them you'd think Labour has been in government for the past 13 years. For the Party of personal responsibility they aren't keen on taking any themselves.

I heard this will be the Tory anthem at the next General Election.

His point is that this is free accommodation with free food etc for supposedly desperate people. The conditions will be better than many brits live in (yes a problem in itself). Why are we expected to provide 5 star accommodation to anyone who comes here claiming asylum? It's better than a refugee camp.

saoirse31 · 08/08/2023 15:33

Is he not just saying what most Tories, and others think? Disgusting but in all honesty , surely no one can be surprised.

GCAcademic · 08/08/2023 15:37

This was a comment make explicitly for Express readers. They'll lap it up. Lee is in the post that he's in specifically to pander to Express and Mail readers. Meanwhile, Sunak, the Attorney General, etc. act as the more civilised (it's all relative) face of the Tory party. Between them, they cover all the bases.

LakeTiticaca · 08/08/2023 15:38

Well it was good enough for construction workers and oil rig workers, why is it deemed inhumane for 500 blokes who we are expected to feed and house when we have a big enough homeless crisis already?
Why would they complain if they have escaped recently from a warzone?
And where are all the women and children?

AgathaSpencerGregson · 08/08/2023 15:39

It seems to me clear beyond all shadow of a doubt that the aim of current Tory policy absolutely is to persuade people who might otherwise seek to leave France by way of unsafe crossings not to do so. Mr Anderson’s tone may be unappealing to the delicately nurtured but the reasons why this is not a legitimate aim of policy.
Labour get typically pissy re: the detail but I don’t think they are arguing against that objective either.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 08/08/2023 15:40

Sorry that should say the reasons why this is not a legitimate aim of policy are not obvious.

Churchill is still beloved by Conservatives. It's the Left that hate him. Mind you, they also regard Gandhi as a hideous racist who should be expunged from history.

Luxury accommodation?

https://twitter.com/RuairiKelly_/status/1688782670384308224?s=20
I lived on the Bibby Stockholm while working in Shetland. It was one person to a cabin and we were only on it about 10 hours a day to eat and sleep. I can assure you it was not luxurious and with 2 people to a cabin and most/all day on board it's a recipe for disaster

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/08/2023 15:42

They think we're all thick AF.

TBF, some people are thick AF. It really is scraping the bottom of the barrel using racism and xenophobia to mask incompetence and fuckwittery, but as this thread shows, it works on some people.🤷‍♀️

midsomermurderess · 08/08/2023 15:44

Our political discourse has become so crude, vulgar, debased. It is quite lowering.

Breakoutbertha · 08/08/2023 15:45

All I'm going to say is my stance has changed since living within 0.7 miles of a travel lodge now homing 232 male asylum seekers. I'm not a racist but why I've personally witnessed beggars belief.
So yes I do want them moved to that barge and ASAP

DuncinToffee · 08/08/2023 15:45

No10 has confirmed that Anderson spoke on behalf of the government

https://twitter.com/wizbates/status/1688865323192041474?s=20
Number 10 has backed Lee Anderson over his 'migrants who don't like barges can f**k off back to France' comment.

After Justice Sec Alex Chalk said "his indignation was well placed", No10 told Sky: "The Justice Secretary was speaking on behalf of the government."

And where are all the women and children?

It's not filled to 200%, and in some respects 1000% capacity when it's homing oil workers, because the workers wouldn't stand for it, and the company wouldn't get away with it thanks to some basic legislation.

On top of that, oil-workers are salaried and take home a decent income. The people here are 'paid' the equivalent of £1 per day, don't have any choice, and have their liberty extremely curtailed. They are not provided with the fully functional facilities the more common occupants are either.

And where are all the women and children?

Do you think it's appropriate to house women and children in a secure, confined, and totally understaffed and under-monitored environment with 500 disparate men, or is this more of a 'these men are no doubt all chancers and criminals' question?

beguilingeyes · 08/08/2023 15:46

Even if you agree with what he said (I think it's reprehensible BTW), surely that sort of language is pretty disgusting coming from the CHAIRMAN of the party! The fact that he's in that position at all in unbelievable but the Tories really have scraped the barrel and gone through to the other side with him haven't they?
And is there no way they can get rid of Sponger Nadine?

midsomermurderess · 08/08/2023 15:47

Alex Chalk had seemed like one of the few normal ones in government. I've bot a ranting, spittle-flecked populist.

I was referring back to the OP, who was clearly deploying the word « Churchillian » as a compliment.
re Gandhi in fact he was quite racist - he certainly had no problem with the treatment of black South Africans - but I’ll leave the expungings from history to the left I think. Most conservatives, me included, get that people can have good and bad characteristics, and the latter don’t necessarily mean that the former are entirely negated. They

I'd like to see him volunteer to live for a year on the barge, if he thinks it is adequate accommodation.

What are the options though?

Unphased · 08/08/2023 15:48

I would imagine the vast majority of people would agree with him, if I was really fleeing possible death and persecution I would only be to glad of somewhere safe, warm and being fed and showered with hot water,
