I hate my EMMA mattress

I have an EMMA mattress that I have steadily grown to hate, I couldn't return it as my cats had pulled the sides a bit so I just made peace with it, now I'm starting to think I must change it or I'll go mad!!!
I don't want a memory foam mattress as I think they are fake advertising, does anybody actually like theirs?
If I decide to give in and buy myself a new one what should I go for?

I don’t know what the answer is. I loved sleeping on an Emma in a friends guest room, but it was winter and I fear in the summer it will be too warm.

13 years ago we had a top end John Lewis pocket spring mattress. It lasted 13 years without a blip. The main things for me being no movement when DH moved and not hot. Eventually it started to fade so we went to JL and asked for the 2022 equivalent. It was twice the price (unexpectedly) but twice as shit. I can feel every time he rolls over or moves. plus it crunches as he sits on the edge.

am now contemplating two small singles which fit on our king frame?

IKEA mattresses are presumably made for IKEA beds, not standard sizes.

Nope I have a standard king size mattress from IKEA, it's great.

We've got a dreams Therapur mattress. Was about £800 but worth every penny

@Imamumgetmeoutofhere I know this is kind of difficult to answer, but when you lie down on it, does it feel 'heavy'? I'm looking for a stress that feels heavy/solid/compact, not springy. But I don't want to pay thousands for it

Clefable · 06/08/2023 21:36

Oh I love our Emma mattress! But mattresses are such personal things I think, so YANBU to hate it.

HappiDaze · 06/08/2023 21:38

I love our Ikea mattresses Hovag but I think it's been replaced by a similar one BBC which is just as good. The firm and medium are equally as good. I prefer the medium as it's softer on top but a firm base

bridgetreilly · 06/08/2023 21:38

@alszq I just googled, and it looks like they are all standard sizes. Are the duvets still weird sizes or standard?

Redraddisho27 · 06/08/2023 21:39

I had a horrible eve foam mattress. What a load of crap. Style over substance. So uncomfortable and hot!

whirlyhead · 06/08/2023 21:39

I hated my Emma mattress so much I gave it away and got a simba which has been much better. The Emma was rock hard! The simba is starting to get a bit saggy though.

I have a tempur mattress in the spare room which is the best mattress ever but it wouldn’t go,up the stairs to the loft sadly. I am currently moving house and plan to get another tempur.

No they're standard size these days

Mygrandadwasmywingman · 06/08/2023 21:41

We bought one in a sale
Best mattress ever-for the first 3 years
I started to get back pain but ignored it-I put it down to my job
Until it got that bad one morning,I couldn't get out of bed-the pain was that bad and was forced to call an ambulance
One a&e trip (and some very strong painkillers plus two weeks off work) later,we looked at it properly
It had sagged on both sides, leaving a huge lump in the middle
I got in touch with Emma and they couldn't have been less interested-just told me to send in photos and never got back to me
Never again-we bought a new mattress and not had any issues since
Utter waste of £500

silentpool · 06/08/2023 21:42

I didn't find mine comfortable and bought a latex topper for it which made it better. But I don't want to buy a new one - I suppose at some point when I see a good sale, I will move it to the spare room.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 06/08/2023 21:42

@VinEtFromage not really. It was marketed as a medium mattress, it's a pocket sprung mattress with a gel layer so it's supportive but it kind of moulds to your shape but not a sinking in kind of way like you have on a memory foam.

Friths · 06/08/2023 21:43

Love my Emma but only with a good topper.

needcheese · 06/08/2023 21:45

same here, my Emma mattress was a massive waste of money. Gave me hip and back pain, can’t believe I put up with it for 2 years. Back to a silent night pocket sprung mattress which has been great.

landbeforegrime · 06/08/2023 21:45

we have an eve one. also not great and we are disappointed with it. would not get memory foam again. can't justify replacing it anytime soon though. will try to put up with it for a couple more years before replacing.

MoonlightMuse · 06/08/2023 21:45

I really don’t get on with mattresses that come vacuum packed, never firm enough. For me a decent mattress is one that doesn’t need a topper or anything extra. I always get Sealy orthopaedics and they have always been great

ConfessionsOfAMumDramaQueen · 06/08/2023 21:46

Mattresses are very personal. We have an Emma Hybrid and we love it! Recommended to friends and family, everyone who got love it too!

Wouldn't have gotten a straight memory foam one though. We do rotate it 180 degrees every month or so to even out wearing.

Techno56 · 06/08/2023 21:46

John Ryan pocket sprung - they are amazing

BusinessClass · 06/08/2023 21:47

I have a Tempur cloud sensation elite and love it

Utini · 06/08/2023 21:48

John Ryan By Design do some really good pocket sprung mattresses, at much better prices than their equivalents from major brands like Vispring.

They also have loads of information about mattresses on their website, so worth a look even if you don't want to buy from them.

Flockameanie · 06/08/2023 21:49

We have a latex one, from Una, which I think is pretty comfy. It has three separate layers, on each side, so you can adjust the firmness. I've had to tweak the order of the layers quite a lot to get it right for me. But I like that I can change it. Handy as I've recently found I need a softer mattress than I used to.

Expensive though. We bought it to replace a John Ryan pocket spring one, which I never really found comfortable and only lasted about 6 years before it got massive dips in it where we slept.

Flockameanie · 06/08/2023 21:50

Oh, and it weighs a fucking ton

saltinesandcoffeecups · 06/08/2023 21:51

I’m now a fan of the hybrid mattresses. It’s the best of both worlds. I hate the foam temperpedic ones and I won’t go back to a coil mattress. So hybrid it is. Got my current one off Amazon and love it. It was so cheap compared to the the full foam one that I figured even if I hated it I could buy a new one and still be ahead. 2 years in and I’m still happy.

dearJayne · 06/08/2023 21:52

I bought a latex mattress 8 years ago and it's the comfiest mattress I've ever slept on.
