I hate my EMMA mattress

I have an EMMA mattress that I have steadily grown to hate, I couldn't return it as my cats had pulled the sides a bit so I just made peace with it, now I'm starting to think I must change it or I'll go mad!!!
I don't want a memory foam mattress as I think they are fake advertising, does anybody actually like theirs?
If I decide to give in and buy myself a new one what should I go for?

Urgh, got the cooling mattress, arrived late, waited days to air out the stench, hard as iron, asked them to pick it up, they said they'd send out a topper to make it more comfortable, took a fortnight to arrive and it was a limp bit of foam and no better, and so Emma is on its way back or will be once they get organised.

Just thought I'd add my cautionary tale with the others. Weeks of fuck all sleep and a back full of knots. Awful.

Greetings to all! I trust you're doing fine. I wanted to inform you that I've made the decision to cancel my order with Emma. I patiently waited for nearly three months for the "next-gen" mattress, but upon its arrival, I was disappointed to find that it bore no resemblance to the image displayed on the Emma website. Instead, it appeared to be a poorly constructed mattress that lacked adequate support.

Upon my return, I decided to conduct some investigations into Emma, a company that purported to be based in the UK but was, in fact, headquartered in Germany. My discoveries were quite concerning. I learned that Emma had received two warnings from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA): one for misleading promotional offers and a second for seldom selling their mattresses at their full price. Additionally, there was another warning from ASA regarding an advertisement on YouTube. This advertisement was associated with a website, Top 5 mattresses which claimed to provide independent mattress reviews but was, in reality, operated by Emma itself.
Emma's decision to disregard the ASA's warning regarding misleading discounts prompted the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to intervene. After their investigation, the CMA also concluded that Emma rarely sold mattresses at their full price and subsequently issued a warning to the company.
So, why did I decide to purchase Emma's mattress? Well, my decision was influenced by a review on Which? Best Buy. However, to my surprise, I later discovered that Which? charges Emma for the use of their award. While I'm not certain about the exact amount, it appears to be around £30,000 per year per award, based on information available online. This revelation left me somewhat annoyed, as I had chosen to buy the mattress primarily based on the Which? award.
Although I have received a refund, I'm left with concerns regarding Which?'s continued support for Emma. It seems evident from the numerous 1-star reviews on Emma's Trustpilot page that there are many dissatisfied customers. I wonder why Which? continues to endorse Emma, and I suspect it may be due to the financial arrangement where Emma pays for the use of these awards.
Which, a brand that is supposed to safeguard consumer interests, appears to be prioritizing its own financial gain over the protection of customers like you and me. It's disheartening to see them profiting while customers are left feeling misled and unsatisfied with their purchases. I'm astonished that Which? allows such practices, and as a result, I've decided not to make any future purchases based on their reviews.
Consider this a cautionary message to others: please be vigilant when it comes to incentivized reviews and deceptive information on Emma's website. Stay informed and exercise caution to ensure your purchasing decisions are based on accurate and unbiased information.

Good grief, that's fabulous detective work @LEE6783 and shocking about Which charging for the 'award'!

I'm so disillusioned with so many companies now. FedEx have given me the runaround for over a week and Cox&Cox is a shadow of it's former self. They sell items as 'in stock', once ordered they email to say January delivery then when you try to cancel they offer you a bribe of £20 to wait for it.
Hmm Don't refund either despite saying they have, now trying to do a chargeback Am sorry for derailing with my moan.

Emma mattresses are things from hell.
I've got a fabulous new sprung mattress with gel topper section. It's lovely - everyone except my Emma loving friend agrees!!

JaceLancs · 22/11/2023 21:23

I heeded your warnings and bought a pocket sprung wool filled mattress from John Lewis which im in love with

LEE6783 · 26/11/2023 08:41

you dodged the bullet for sure..

I bought a Premier Inn SilentNight Mattress recently and really like it. I knew I would get a chance to test any so went on the basis I'd had a good sleep on holiday!

Yeah, I did the same. It's a great mattress and I no longer have backache.👍

Easy to order through the Premier Inn website - and delivery was reliable.

I have a memory foam mattress, it’s too firm but I love it!

Our last memory foam mattress died a saggy death and our new one felt perfect in the store but it’s a little firm.

Sort of lie on it rather than sink in. No back pain which is good but it’s taking some adjusting to.

Mattress shopping is an absolute nightmare!

MigGirl · 26/11/2023 08:56

Our main matters is a tempur and we love it, we had a memory foam mattress before and tried to replace it with a nector which turned out to be awful and we sent it back and decided to bit the bullet and get a tempur.

We got a Emma mattress for our spare bedroom and it's comfortable enough (I sleep on it a coupleof times a week), it's just there basic one nothing fancy. And while I would have loved another tempur, couldn't justify the cost for the spare bed.

Notellinganyone · 26/11/2023 09:04

Me too. My mattress is old school spring mattress with cashmere and wool. I’ve had two - the first lasted 20 years and we replaced last year. Had great fun in Bensons trying all the mattresses. They do 4 years interest free credit so can afford to spend £1500 without breaking the bank. I find memory foam suffocating.

I think that’s what the Emma one is like – we got ours after I had a back issue (did that thing where it ‘went’ suddenly and couldn’t move for weeks) and I was just relieved to have something that offered proper support. It does feel a bit odd if you’re not used to it. Like you say, you don’t really sink into it, it doesn’t yield, it’s a bit of an odd sensation, but in my case great for my back and sleep v well.

Your comments about Which and so-called honest reviews don't surprise me at all. Our new Vispring bed (two separate mattresses without zips to form a kingsize bed (a) because I won't be so aware of OH moving, and (b) for ease of turning them) is arriving on Friday.

We bought it from a retailer in Salisbury who, apart from his very competitive pricing and good service, spent some time explaining the dark arts employed by which and the likes of Trustpilot. I've long thought many review sites are open to manipulation, but Which? Seriously? People actually pay a monthly subscription, which isn't cheap, for their reviews and buying amongst other things. It comes to something when buyers need to beware of the organisation which tells buyers to beware.

I really hope our new Vispring mattresses live up to their marketing claims.🤞

enchantedsquirrelwood · 26/11/2023 18:12

I bought one from Premier Inn, it's the one they use in their hotel rooms.

I have now ordered a second one for our spare bedroom.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 26/11/2023 18:15

As for Emma, their sales tactics are suspect (see also Wowcher, also being investigated by the CMA). But that doesn't necessarily mean that the mattresses are no good, that's a different issue. And it doesn't matter where a company is HQ'd.

Which? may charge for use of its logo, I don't know, but the tests it does are not rigged or biased.

JennyWren87 · 26/11/2023 18:40

I hate mine too! We bought ours at the start of the new year when we moved into our own home. Both of us have back pain now and don't sleep well at all on that fucker of a mattress.

We're getting a new one in February. Going back to a cheap £100-£200 one. Like we used to

LEE6783 · 26/11/2023 19:02

So why is Which still working with Emma after numerous warnings from ASA and then the UK government CMA? Is which supposed to protect the public from dodgy companies? Check Emma trust pilot reviews if you need some proof.

Oh my God I hated my Emma mattress. Gave me the worst hip pain and I felt so unsupported. Now have a hard as rock orthopedic one with a topper. So much better and was much cheaper as in the sale. Win!

I know you wrote this months ago but which topper did you get?
