Just finished watching Doctor Foster (yes I know I’m late to the party) after many people recommended it.

It was TERRIBLE

It should have been called “How to be a shit parent who forever damages your child.” [SPOILER ALERT] Id have run away from home too if I was the child. I usually like Surranah Jones but I just couldn’t bring myself to be on her side in this show. Aside from the fact that her and her doctor friend would be immediately struck of for calling a patient’s boyfriend to tell them she’s having an abortion and announcing it to her parents at a dinner party - I thought telling her widowed friend she had it worse than he did because her husband had an affair was despicable. What a massive, massive drama Queen! And we are supposed to believe the husband was some sort of stud with women fawning all over him. Sorry but I thought he was so unattractive and boring, he couldn’t get a woman like Jodie Comer if he was the last man on Earth.

What TV show has massively underwhelmed you?

The crown 😬
Each scene is 3 days long.
It's soooo boring!
Gave up on episode 3, series 1.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 07/08/2023 00:12

Friends and Schitts creak. Both utter fucking drivel

XelaM · 07/08/2023 00:55

Yellowstone - it's rated so highly on imdb and everyone raves about it, but it's actually terrible. Pretty much everything about it is terrible except the few rodeo scenes. and if anyone has seen it, Beth is the worst character ever created in any film or show (closely followed by Rip).

Ilovetea33 · 07/08/2023 04:40

Fleabag. I found her so unlikable and didn't want to watch her sex life.
Breaking Bad. I gave up after the episode when the bathtub broke, I found that so disgusting.
Mad Men.
Schitts Creek.

Mum. I'd forgotten about that, thanks for reminding me.
This Is Going to Hurt.
I'm sure there are more that I have fortunately forgotten.
Life is too short to watch series you don't like in the vain hope that they're going to get better.

KimberleyClark · 07/08/2023 06:37

I the first episode of Black Mirror and found it so utterly twisted and disturbing that I couldn’t bring myself to watch any more of it. Rory Kinnear was just fab though.

Coastalcreeksider · 07/08/2023 08:51

The Bodyguard. It was so slow and unbelievable, the love affair between Keeley Hawes and the bodyguard was boring, I was quite glad when she bought it, it livened the episode up a bit. I stuck with it thinking it would get better.

It didn't.

Poorlymumma · 07/08/2023 08:53

Not a TV show but I found the movie inception really boring.

chachaching · 07/08/2023 09:37

Big bang theory
Superstore

Gerrataere · 07/08/2023 09:54

The Middle, Big Bang Theory, Stranger Things, Greys Anatomy. All shows that people have sworn are amazing and addictive. Just can’t get them, especially The Middle which was the most twee, boring, preachy load of twaddle.

I didn’t ‘get’ Frozen either, it’s pretty cheesy and not the ‘most beautiful love story’ it’s made out to be. I think Moana and Brave are very underrated compared to Frozen in terms of a genuinely strong plot.

Not technically a tv show but it was adapted - The Boy, Horse, Mole, whatever. Absolute drivel, like a self help book for the Be Kind generation. Full of meaningless word salad.

Coastalcreeksider · 07/08/2023 12:46

Regarding Greys Anatomy, I've never admitted to anyone quite how underwhelming I found it. I made it to series 3 after saying I'd not bother as I thought series 2 with Izzy and the older bloke patient was about as ludicrous a storyline as it was possible to get but gave up a couple of episodes in.

There, I've admitted it.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/08/2023 12:51

Breaking Bad
Killing Eve
Mad Men
Parks and Recreation

With the latter two I didn't get further than one episode. The first two started out promisingly but got really stupid fairly quickly.

Can't stand Fleabag either.

I could see that Sopranos was good objectively, but I found all the characters so unlikeable that I just didn't care what happened to any of them.

Absolutely loved Game of Thrones but hated the books!

101jobs · 07/08/2023 12:55

Killing Eve
Bridgerton

WeetabixTowels · 07/08/2023 12:55

*TBH this is why I dislike a lot of US series' - they drag things out for far too long. Instead of saying "We have enough storylines to do X seasons with Y episodes with a finite ending of Z to wrap things up nearly for fans" they say "We have enough storylines to do X seasons of Y episodes but if it's popular then we'll just keep going and infinitum to the point at which nobody is watching any more because we've moved everyone to space in 2092 as we ran out of earth based dramas and then wrap it all up with everything after season 2 having been the main characters fever dream"^

So true.

Grey’s Anatomy being a prime example. Excellent early seasons - they should have stopped after 4,

The Wire

To be fair it took us 3 goes to get into this. So glad I did, it was amazing!

Oh good the first episode haunted me! I can’t watch Rory Kinnear anymore without feeling sick

Pesky blinders for me....🙈

REP22 · 07/08/2023 13:05

Game of Thrones - irredeemable tosh, unnecessarily nasty.
The Big Bang Theory. My nephew is obsessed with it, but have never found any part of it funny. And when a character has to adopt/rely on a fake "funny" voice or accent as a character trait, something's off with the script (same with the desperately unfunny Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps).

I liked Friends at the time but looking back at old episodes I sometimes wonder why.

I cannot understand the appeal of Mrs. Brown's Boys.

I do love Sex and the City though.

I gave up after season 6. Seasons 1 and 2 are amazing, some of my all-time favourite TV, and s3 was good, but it went steadily downhill from 4 onwards. I persevered through 5 and 6 hoping it might get back to what it was but it just got worse and worse.

I personally think the Hilltop-Alexandria-Oceanside nonsense (which was what, season 5?) finished it off. Too many characters. There was a brief spark of interest with the mystery around Negan at the end of 6, but when he actually appeared he was so bloody annoying, swinging his bat around on his "Well loookeeeee here" schtick.

I did that with Breaking Bad. The first few episodes are like wading through mud but if you can get past it, wow. It’s worth the push through but I do appreciate some people just want to jump right into something without the mental effort.

Momtotwokids · 07/08/2023 13:10

I didn't like anything the actress in Doctor Foster was in. She was over the top.

The Wire

Agree with this. I couldn't understand a word anyone said. What the fuck were they talking about? I'll never know.

Violetparis · 07/08/2023 13:13

Succession - just wasn't interested in what happened to the characters.

themosttiptoptopcat · 07/08/2023 13:16

His Dark Materials

phoenixrosehere · 07/08/2023 13:52

Motherland

I found most of the characters unlikeable, rude, and exhausting. There are some funny bits but it makes me glad I don’t know actual people like them.

MiMouse · 07/08/2023 14:08

I watch a lot of shows, big fan of tv, but here are some popular ones I gave up on:

Handmaid's Tale (it's one of my favourite books of all time, so this was really disappointing)
Riverdale (I tolerated it for a lot longer than most, but in the end I just couldn't with the sheer stupidity)
Outlander (stop using rape as a plot device, Diana, I swear to god)
House M.D. (too repetitive)
How to get away with murder (too repetitive)
13 Reasons Why (should not have gone past season 1)

The Big Bang Theory has aged terribly (already), as has Friends, but I liked them at the time (although TBBT went on too long, and by that time the first seasons were already unwatchable). I never liked Sex and the City.
