Just finished watching Doctor Foster (yes I know I’m late to the party) after many people recommended it.

It was TERRIBLE

It should have been called “How to be a shit parent who forever damages your child.” [SPOILER ALERT] Id have run away from home too if I was the child. I usually like Surranah Jones but I just couldn’t bring myself to be on her side in this show. Aside from the fact that her and her doctor friend would be immediately struck of for calling a patient’s boyfriend to tell them she’s having an abortion and announcing it to her parents at a dinner party - I thought telling her widowed friend she had it worse than he did because her husband had an affair was despicable. What a massive, massive drama Queen! And we are supposed to believe the husband was some sort of stud with women fawning all over him. Sorry but I thought he was so unattractive and boring, he couldn’t get a woman like Jodie Comer if he was the last man on Earth.

What TV show has massively underwhelmed you?

Everyone tells me I will love any show which features Ricky Gervais. I don't. I think he is funny, for instance in articles, but I cringe inside out when he's in a sitcom.

Old boyfriends used to insist I'd totally piss myself at anything featuring John Cleese. I don't.

I feel a little vindicated that I'm not the only one saying Peaky Blinders!

EarringsandLipstick · 06/08/2023 18:09

Quite a number of these I knew I wouldn't like, just not my thing (like Breaking Bad, BBT, Killing Eve) so I think that has to play a part - if it's not your type of series, or you don't one violence, for example, there will be series that even if objectively good, you'll hate.

I also think context & timing matter. I tried Schitt's Creek several times. Couldn't get it. I'm now watching it & loving it but in an odd way - it's all a bit boring, repetitive & one-dimensional. Overall it's not funny, not in a laugh-out-loud way. But there are moments of pure joy & sweetness, some super acting & it's funny in a way that can't be described. I watch it in little doses & find it soothing!

Likewise Sex Education - I loved it - but only after about 5 episodes, it really took some time to grow on me.

Series I tried & could not get into: Gilmore Girls, Seinfeld; some I did keep watching but didn't love - Bridgerton (my DD loves it) & Virgin River (it's so bad & with ludicrous plots but I've somehow kept going).

Also series I loved that just went on too long & got stupid: Outlander, The Good Fight, Suits.

I'd say it's great but I've tried to watch a few times, but I can't beat the violence & grime.

SamW98 · 06/08/2023 18:15

Gangs Of London. People raved about it but it was absolutely dreadful and the acting was shocking, like some sort of bad am dram production. Appallingly bad

Prestat · 06/08/2023 18:17

I loved most v hyped shows.

Mad Men
Game of Thrones
The Wire
Breaking Bad
The Bridge
The Killing

I fairly enjoyed the first series of Bridgerton, but only managed half of the first episode of series 2 before realising not interested to watch further.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/08/2023 18:18

loved mad men

Loved Mad Men early series. Thought later ones were dreadful & Don Draper became a caricature of himself.

I think it's aged badly & now can't believe I ever liked it.

Prestat · 06/08/2023 18:18

Forgot to add loved Peaky Blinders too.

Traceyislivid · 06/08/2023 18:37

Agree with the comments about Good Omens 2. Could have all been wound up in one episode.

Davros · 06/08/2023 18:58

Peaky Blinders
Ten Pound Poms. I was really looking forward to it, hated it

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2023 19:05

Oh Ten pound Poms was really disappointed I was looking forward to it.

Mrslongchamp · 06/08/2023 19:06

Hijacked

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2023 19:09

Ah is good omens 2 rubbish? It was filmed in our town(,even though its meant to be Edinburgh it isn't ) I was looking forward to watching it.

MissDollyMix · 06/08/2023 19:11

So many! Happy Valley stands out as a recent one. I was really excited to watch it but I hated it. Was also very disappointed not to enjoy fleabag more as I usually love quirky comedies.

Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso took me two attempts, but I was quite invested in (all the other) characters by the end, which tied up quite nicely.

I could never finish Mad Men or Breaking Bad; just got fed up.

FFSDILIGAF · 06/08/2023 19:15

Game of Thrones - watched 1 episode
Superstore
Breaking Bad
Downton
Couldnt make it past season 3 of Walking Dead
OITNB dragged out for two Seasons two many

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 06/08/2023 19:19

DH and I are fairly sure we are 2 of the 7 people who made it to the end of The Walking Dead.

SlippinJanie · 06/08/2023 19:23

Oh god, I'd forgotten about the Walking Dead. I watched it ALL and I have no idea why. In the end I was watching it "just to get it over with" which makes very little sense. It was tripe.

OvaHere · 06/08/2023 19:23

Outlander and Mad Men are two of my big disappointments. On paper they have all the ingredients of shows I should really enjoy but just couldn't get into them.

On the flip side I didn't think I'd love Breaking Bad but I did. Also the American version of The Office - put off trying it for ages thinking it would be shit but really enjoyed it.

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 06/08/2023 19:35

Rings of Power. I really really wanted to like it but it was just..... dull. Bits were OK, but the writing clunked and I'm sorry, but you don't do that to Galadriel. I've actually read The Silmarillion and the writers of this clearly hadn't.

No it's not set in Edinburgh, although Edinburgh does feature in an episode.
It's gorgeously produced and I really enjoyed watching it. But I had to treat it mentally as something completely separate to G.O. the original. It's one of my favourite books, and the original adaptation is still not great to my eye as a lot of the characters aren't as I perceive them in my mind's eye, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

You can see the overblown heavy hand of Gaiman in G.O.2 by the way the whole story could be told in two episodes, but is dragged out to 6 with a load of incomprehensible nonsense ( much like his books).

Seeing G.O.2 made it very clear to me which bits Sir Terry was responsible for in the original.

Almahart · 06/08/2023 19:48

Bridgerton. Honestly I don't think this would have got the attention it did had it not been the only thing going on in the awful January 2021 lockdown.

Better Call Saul. I persevered with BB in part so that I could watch this as I loved the Saul Goodman character, but I thought it was boring and unconvincing. Biggest disappointment.

GrouchyKiwi · 06/08/2023 19:48

Another vote for Outlander. I managed one episode and that was sufficient.

Ditto Game of Thrones (although it was the same with the books for me so I should have known - I tried and gave up with them three times).

The Fall has not drawn me in as I thought it would, nor did the one about Murder with Viola Davis.

I have a particularly bad habit of being against the hyped programmes/books/films on principle.

Neyon · 06/08/2023 19:50

Stranger Things, a million times over. Boring from the very start and doesn't hook you in at all.

User1755387908 · 06/08/2023 19:58

I thought Stranger Things was boring but probably because I not the age group it's aimed at.
