Just finished watching Doctor Foster (yes I know I’m late to the party) after many people recommended it.

It was TERRIBLE

It should have been called “How to be a shit parent who forever damages your child.” [SPOILER ALERT] Id have run away from home too if I was the child. I usually like Surranah Jones but I just couldn’t bring myself to be on her side in this show. Aside from the fact that her and her doctor friend would be immediately struck of for calling a patient’s boyfriend to tell them she’s having an abortion and announcing it to her parents at a dinner party - I thought telling her widowed friend she had it worse than he did because her husband had an affair was despicable. What a massive, massive drama Queen! And we are supposed to believe the husband was some sort of stud with women fawning all over him. Sorry but I thought he was so unattractive and boring, he couldn’t get a woman like Jodie Comer if he was the last man on Earth.

What TV show has massively underwhelmed you?

Sex in the City. Grin

@WeetabixTowels finding Killing Eve tedious is my guilty secret as everyone seems to love it. Totally awful program.

I loved the first series, but it just descended into farce by the second series.
I found myself thinking "just kill Eve for fucks sake and put us out of our misery"

FKATondelayo · 06/08/2023 15:27

I feel about Sex & The City the same way my kids feel about Star Wars. Love the brand, products, characters (well...Samantha) and memes. Would rather pull my eyelids out than watch an episode.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/08/2023 15:41

Schitts Creek - I know they are a previously wealthy family and the daughter Alexis is very spoiled but watching her have her bratty tantrums and almost turn herself inside out as she stamped her feet really made my palm itchy Angry

Limitedisall · 06/08/2023 15:43

I agree with both Dr Foster and Outlander. Couldn't keep watching either of them.

The Wire. So boring. And I don't rate Idris Elba at all, or the guy who then ended up in The Affair - which was another letdown.

Agree about The Wire. Tried 3 times, could not get into it. Disagree about Idris Elba though, loved him in Luther!

PleaseGiveMeBackMySummer · 06/08/2023 16:01

All these are crap IMO

Peaky Blinders
Downton Abbey
Miranda
Fleabag
Bridgerton
Sex and the city
The big bang theory

All of these were good, but for the first 3 seasons only - then they went downhill/got boring/samey/daft... (IMO...)

Game of Thrones
Walking Dead
Line of duty
Orange is the new black
Glee

LOVED Doctor Foster... AND Killing Eve... AND Friends... Each to their own. 😚

Savemesos · 06/08/2023 16:07

Broadchurch. So disappointing. Felt like I’d had a lobotomy. There’s not many modern day murder dramas that I do like now -they’re all so try hard.

Abouttimemum · 06/08/2023 16:09

Breaking Bad is terrible. Everyone kept saying to me to persevere but you can only go so long before you feel like you’re just wasting your life.

Walking Dead should have ended 5 years ago.

Also agree with sex and the city and Bridgerton.

Love Big Bang though. And friends!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/08/2023 16:11

Gilmore girls. I watched 3 seasons because so many on mn love it, kept thinking this will be the episode where it gets better. Nope.

Never mind the Buzzcocks.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/08/2023 16:14

"State Of Play" (2003 mini series) I kept reading it was a tense political thriller , many big star names .
I thought Oh it'll be like Between the Lines

Watched it in one day over New Year one year . ...5 hours 12 minutes (according to search , but add in the intro/recap and credits , it's more ) of my life I won't get back .

"Gold Digger" 2019 , I watched this when I was in recovery so I fell asleep a few times which still made no difference !

Twilight7777 · 06/08/2023 16:17

Schitts creek, tried so hard to like it and it was just dull.

SamW98 · 06/08/2023 16:17

Recently had Colin From Accounts recommended to me as funniest thing people had seen in years.
I made it through 2 painfully unfunny episodes then gave ip without cracking a smile.

And I’ve never understood the obsession with OFAH. It had amusing moments but I really don’t think it’s that funny at all.

Ghosttofu99 · 06/08/2023 16:19

JesusHRooseveltChristSassenach · 06/08/2023 12:24

Breaking Bad. Watched two seasons waiting for it to get good.... Turns out I'm still waiting.

The interesting thing about Breaking Bad was that they initially give the impression he was a good man put in a bad situation but once you get all the way to the end and look back over it you realise that he was a narcissistic a**hole from the the get go.

aSofaNearYou · 06/08/2023 16:29

The Mandalorian. I can pretty much get into anything with a lot of hype around it but modern Star Wars and Marvel just leave me cold.

I found the first episode of Succession really boring too, couldn't bring myself to watch more.

midsomermurderess · 06/08/2023 16:34

I agree with Colin From Accounts. I don’t think you have to like people in tv series and films, or books for that matter, but it doesn’t help if you find almost all of them relentlessly obnoxious, and childish, with very few other dimensions.

Freshair1 · 06/08/2023 16:37

Your home made perfect. It's 75% filler and repeated snippets with zilch insight into the build processes and only 13 mins average given to looking at the end result, usually with an architect having to restrain themselves from screaming into the abyss.

Kindofcrunchy · 06/08/2023 16:39

Crap American remakes: The Office (nowhere near as good as UK version)

Thought this too at the beginning but you have to watch past season 1 as it just emulates the UK version (badly). Season 2 and thereafter is much much better. I rewatch it every now and again, whereas I never rewatch the BBC one - too cringey.

Willmafrockfit · 06/08/2023 16:41

Bridgerton,
hated how he pulled out

Willmafrockfit · 06/08/2023 16:51

line of duty got painful - please dont come back
dr foster was awful immediately
loved breaking bad
loved mad men
not seen succession
loved the bear but had to be persuaded to carry on as it was stress inducing.
enjoyed killing eve but perhaps only the first series gave up
loved i may destroy you
loved fleabag
loved colin from accounts.
also was excited to see State of Play series from 2003, meh, watched it all but not the best, dated i think.

SpidersAreShitheads · 06/08/2023 16:57

Aaaah I love The Big Bang Theory - I watched it when it was more of a niche/cult series and no one really knew about it, especially here in the UK. My DB - who inhabits that world and was doing a Physics PhD at the time - asked me to watch it as him and his colleagues were curious about whether it would appeal to those who weren't living that life. And I loved it instantly.

I think the thing is that you have to watch the series for a while, and then you start to appreciate the depth in the characters - and that things aren't what they initially seem. Women are actually the powerhouses in that show, even though on face value it's about four men.

But if you don't enjoy the show, you'll never get to that point because obviously you won't carry on watching!

I struggle with a lot of shows as I don't cope very well with cringe humour or second-hand embarrassment (my autistic brain gets a bit overwhelmed!!) So many writers seem to revert to that as a plot mechanism and it just ruins things for me.

A PP said Only Fools and Horses - I think like lots of classics, it was of its time. Probably lots of people still like it because it brings back happy memories, and it's fairly harmless (unlike some other shows from that period). The writing was very clever and the characters had depth - but I agree it's very dated now. If you are watching it for the first time, it probably wouldn't appeal.

I think SATC has aged badly too. In the 90s it felt quite relevant but the world is such a different place now it feels very out of step. The films and the reboots are fucking terrible and they've demolished the essence of what the characters stood for.

They are powerhouses, that's why they deserve so much better than those piss-poor blokes.

Outlander. I cringed the whole time.

I'm watching this at the moment and loving it 😂 Occasionally they do something a bit jarring with artificial slow mo and cross dissolves, they did it a lot in the first episode, but when they're not doing that the show is lovely.

This is why I didn't love it. They did address it but Leonard always thought Penny was beautiful but a bit stupid, right to the end.

Whitewolf2 · 06/08/2023 17:44

Lost was overhyped, they set up so many elements that they never really had an answer for. Similar with Flash Forward.
