Just finished watching Doctor Foster (yes I know I’m late to the party) after many people recommended it.

It was TERRIBLE

It should have been called “How to be a shit parent who forever damages your child.” [SPOILER ALERT] Id have run away from home too if I was the child. I usually like Surranah Jones but I just couldn’t bring myself to be on her side in this show. Aside from the fact that her and her doctor friend would be immediately struck of for calling a patient’s boyfriend to tell them she’s having an abortion and announcing it to her parents at a dinner party - I thought telling her widowed friend she had it worse than he did because her husband had an affair was despicable. What a massive, massive drama Queen! And we are supposed to believe the husband was some sort of stud with women fawning all over him. Sorry but I thought he was so unattractive and boring, he couldn’t get a woman like Jodie Comer if he was the last man on Earth.

What TV show has massively underwhelmed you?

Happy Valley

Maggiesgirl · 06/08/2023 14:37

Game if Thrones couldn't get passed episode 3.

Bridgetown, only watched episode 1, same with SITC.

Friends was drivel, I think I dont get the American sense of humour.

Love Outlander though.

BrendaMcPherson · 06/08/2023 13:19

Line of Duty. I couldn't get past the first couple of episodes of series 1. Maybe I should have stuck with it, but as someone upthread has already said - life is too short.

No I’m absolutely with you on this. Absolutely crap

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 06/08/2023 14:40

Mad men and succession ,both genius. You just have to get them.

Dr Foster was rubbish, as was Friends and GOF.

JudgeJ · 06/08/2023 14:40

Succession. Found it so dull.

I'm ploughing my way through Series 1 as I have been told how wonderful it is but I'm not convinced!
Only Fools and Horses, I've only seen snippets from it, supposedly the funniest bits, if they're the funniest then I'll pass on the rest.
I dislike how some series are dragged out too far, Homeland was one, once he died there was little point in it continuing, ditto House which I loved though they were really struggling in the last couple of series.

VioletLemon · 06/08/2023 14:45

Sex in the City. An oldie but a bunch of self obsessed, rich, white, cock chasing women who play right into Patriarchal sex stereotypes while preaching to be emancipated was fucking depressing. Brigerton was like a Comic Strip presents episode and any Suranne Jones stuff signals 'shitfest' but might be relaxing as its so predicable, likewise with Lesley Sharp.

Furries · 06/08/2023 14:47

Schitts Creek - just couldn’t get into it
Succession - I really WANTED to like it, I binged all 5 seasons so stuck with it, but was just really underwhelmed with it all
I loved the first season of Killing Eve, but they got progressively worse after that

80sMum · 06/08/2023 14:48

I really enjoyed Breaking Bad! It was possibly the best serial I have ever watched, or maybe the very best was Better Call Saul - I liked them both. I liked Ozark too, but for me Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul were better.

Which was the most underwhelming series? That's a difficult one as I tend to give up on programmes I don't like and then forget about them altogether.
I remember I didn't care for Killing Eve much. Also tried The Wire (someone lent me the DVD boxed set) for a few episodes but didn't like it.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 06/08/2023 14:53

I agree with most of these, except Breaking Bad and Homeland (although saying that, Homeland should have finished sooner). I didn't get the love for Broadchurch either.

Vates · 06/08/2023 14:54

Mindhunter. I was excited before it came out as it sounded like something I would really like. I couldn't get past episode 2. I found it so painfully slow and boring.

MrsPoliportsGoose · 06/08/2023 14:55

Succession. I hated every character, so couldn't muster any interest in any of them.

The Good Wife. Awful main character, completely unrealistic and a horrible parent and person. Mind you, this could be said of most American corporate lawyers.

tobee · 06/08/2023 14:57

I watched the first episode of Schitt's Creek and thought it was utterly puerile. I know plenty of people who say it improves and it's great. But I don't care. Why would they put out a terrible first episode when that's the one that's supposed to lure you in? I watched episode one some time ago and I don't feel like my life has been detrimentally affected.

There are so many things constantly being trailed but they all look identikit copies of everything else. The shows might be great the ads for them are off putting. Again, surely that's the wrong way around?

The writer, Mike Bartlett, based it on Medea. The main character’s behaviour was always going to be very, very challenging as her love turned to rage.

User1755387908 · 06/08/2023 14:58

Ted Lasso
Bridgerton
Schitts creek
the sopranos

PuppyMonkey · 06/08/2023 14:59

Don’t agree with all of these as Succession and Thrones and BB and The Wire are amongst my favourite ever TV shows. But Doctor Foster was painfully bad, both acting and scripts.

I was also convinced by others on MN “give Schitts Creek at least the first season” so I persevered and can confirm I was right in the first place - it is indeed utterly unfunny.

LoD is ok for the first three seasons I thought but then becomes a tedious parody of itself. Peaky Blinders was ok for the first season and unwatchable thereafter.

Ozark I gave up after about four eps. Outlander after about 40 minutes.Grin

CoffeeCantata · 06/08/2023 15:01

Jamaica Inn a few years ago, with one of the daughters from Downton Abbey.

It took dim lighting and whispered muttering to new levels and you could hardly see or hear anything! Real shame because I love a good Daphne du Maurier, and the settings and cast were potentially good.

Never got a repeat.

I absolutely loved, loved, loved 'Les Revenants' - on Channel 4, I think, a few years ago. The whole thing was superb - except for the ending, which the writers clearly hadn't worked out beforehand. It kind of fizzled out in a naff way with a sort of 'It was all a dream...' kind of feel.

So disappointing for what could have been the most riveting and original series ever.

MaybeOneAndDone · 06/08/2023 15:01

"I may destroy you", the premise seemed really interesting, but I found the acting was bad and the plot kept going off on weird, pointless tangents. I gave up about halfway through the second episode.

RonObvious · 06/08/2023 15:01

Inside Man. W.T.A.F. Oh god, and Magpie Murders too. Utterly awful.

I have to give some love to Schitts Creek though - I loved that show!

I just about managed to stay awake during the first series of Mindhunter, but the second, no chance. Just gave up.

100%

You've nailed it. I got so cheesed off being the only one amongst my friends to hate SITC. It's beyond awful, and so depressing that so many women see the characters are role models.

seeyouinanotherlifewhenwearebothcats · 06/08/2023 15:07

White Lotus. Apparently the second season is better but after struggling through the first season and being utterly bored I couldn’t do any more.

Also Normal People which was such a hit during lockdown? Did not get that at all and couldn’t finish it.

category12 · 06/08/2023 15:10

Friends was OK at the time, but it doesn't stand up to rewatching at all.

I hate The Big Bang Theory - the blokes are all such arseholes - being a nerd doesn't make treating the women in your lives like shit acceptable. They should have all been dumped.

I can't get into Killing Eve - I don't see chemistry between Eve and Villanelle, so it just seems puzzling why any of it is happening.

dankfarrik · 06/08/2023 15:11

@FKATondelayo you have to make it to season 2 of it’s always sunny then you’re fine. Then if you rewatch it, it turns out season 1 was ok. That first season is hard going though. I usually give people a warning 😂

I’m always actually worried about saying how crap it was because people get offended.
