to not want my 4mo to wear a football kit?

Lighthearted-ish. Bickering this morning... DH has dressed baby in an England babygrow. It was a present from his best friend when they were newborn. It was given with a chuckle, so I see it as something to wear in the house when football is on, for a cute photo, but not to be seen in out of the house.

Today DH has dressed 4mo and I will be out all day. I want to change him but DH thinks I'm being a massive snob.

YABU - you are being a snob. It's just a baby.
YANBU - I am cringing in solidarity and feel your pain. Get him changed now!

My dad brought them to the hospital for my 2. I hate football but found it very funny. Why make a big fuss? Who cares. Save it for the things that matter

Jazzybean · 04/08/2023 11:02

Logically I know it’s fine. But it’s till gives me the ick.

Butteredtoast55 · 04/08/2023 11:04

'This England third kit sleepsuit is ideal for tiny England fans everywhere. Featuring a design inspired by the 1990 third kit, the suit also includes a sewn-on England crest. 100% cotton'

Well it's not nasty synthetic fibres and is not that offensive so on those grounds YABU
But it's 1990s 3rd kit so sadly not very current so YANBU

ManateeFair · 04/08/2023 11:04

You're a terrible snob. But I assume you know that.

Usersooty · 04/08/2023 11:04

Urgh. Will your husband be asking the barber to clip a Nike tick in the side of his head in a few years too?

YANBU. Football kit is for playing football in.

RJnomore1 · 04/08/2023 11:07

It’s not a kit it’s a branded baby gro.

As it’s for your national team it’s not even likely to cause any dissent with rival team fan friends and family members.

Whats the issue? His dad obviously likes it enough to put him in it.

youaintmymother · 04/08/2023 11:08

Well, I'm having a coffee and so far, so not a big deal. Having a giggle at some of the comments. My DH loved the LTB most of all. And he was very appreciative of the additional reasoning of the women's world cup.

Apparently, it is an Italia 90s strip and he wore the matching replica shirt to football last night. We had a rendition of Nessun Dorma accompanied by a flying super baby to the car.

First World problems.

PackettInn · 04/08/2023 11:11

For crying out loud what is it with PFBs today on this forum.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 04/08/2023 11:11

Is the fabric comfortable / is it cotton (or other kind of breathable fabric / natural fibers)?
If yes: I think yabu (and snobby!).

But if you`re out and about, you should feel comfortable / not overly self-conscious.

BrookNoRivals · 04/08/2023 11:13

It's 100% cotton. I don't like it but I'd put up with it- he'll have outgrown it soon and so the problem solves itself.

However if you really can't bear it, do say so. One of DH's friends gave our baby a babygro that said "smile or I'll shit" with the letters all looking like they're dripping in poo. That one went straight in the bin, not even posed for a thank you photo.

youaintmymother · 04/08/2023 11:14

Ooh, what is this acronym?

Boymum2104 · 04/08/2023 11:18

I dress and get my boy ready most days so always pretty much get to pick his outfits. If his dad wants to get him ready & choose an outfit for him I really don't mind. Why do us mums always get to pick lol

melj1213 · 04/08/2023 11:22

YABU - it's a babygrow, who cares what's on it?

And I say that as someone whose DD left hospital in full football babygrow/hat/mittens! In our defence DD was born in Madrid when ExDH and I lived there, I am a massive Real Madrid fan and our hospital was literally round the corner from the stadium. When I was in hospital after DD was born, ExDH was on his way in to pick us up to go home and the closest bus stop dropped him off outside the stadium and he popped into the stadium shop before walking down the block to the hospital and saw the sweetest little white newborn set with a little babygrow/hat/mittens/bib all with the club crest on ... He bought it and brought it back to the hospital and I insisted it was what she was going home in.

DD is a teen now and as we are back in the UK she supports a Premier League team but she still supports RM when they are playing anyone except her team in the Champions League and I still have that tiny little babygrow and hat the mittens were lost almost immediately in her memory box.

HollyB85 · 04/08/2023 11:25

YABU.

My favourite pictures are the ones where I look back and am horrified by what I wore as a child and what my parents dressed me in.

Samlewis96 · 04/08/2023 11:28

Rocknrollstar · 04/08/2023 08:59

What is the problem? I wouldn’t even recognise it as an England baby gro and those people who do will just smile. I knitted my babies jumpers to imitate Arsenal shirts.

London Football GIF by Tottenham Hotspur

Now that's dreadful to emulate Arsenal shirts lol.

There are a lot better reasons to allow your child to wear sportswear chosen for them by their other parent than there are not to. With that being said, as a woman you’re a lot more likely to get irritating comments from strangers on such things when you’re out and about alone with the baby than your husband is, so I would say you get the veto today. I’d still let him wear it though like you’ve done!

ObiKenobi · 04/08/2023 11:34

You made the right decision OP. For one moment there I was most concerned that you would start putting a posh voice on. Tell the friend should your boy become a footy fan, he can foot the bill for all the expensive strips. So you will have the last laugh.

youaintmymother · 04/08/2023 11:53

DH just sent me this on WhatsApp of our 5yo.🤣

What’s with all the hatred of football kit? OP if your child becomes a football fan you’d better get used to buying it every year

So true. And start saving up for them now, they don’t come cheap.

WideOpenSpaces · 04/08/2023 12:55

I wouldn't put that on my baby
