to not want my 4mo to wear a football kit?

Lighthearted-ish. Bickering this morning... DH has dressed baby in an England babygrow. It was a present from his best friend when they were newborn. It was given with a chuckle, so I see it as something to wear in the house when football is on, for a cute photo, but not to be seen in out of the house.

Today DH has dressed 4mo and I will be out all day. I want to change him but DH thinks I'm being a massive snob.

YABU - you are being a snob. It's just a baby.
YANBU - I am cringing in solidarity and feel your pain. Get him changed now!

Look, I feel your pain, in that my poor unsuspecting unborn son has a raft of football tat awaiting him when he comes out. And the fuckers on my ILs side are going to saddle the poor little bugger with a hopeless team too.

But I try to see it benevolently as sort of "welcoming him to the tribe" type behaviour and leave them to it.

At least it’s not Man United!!!

Now that would be abusive, not only red but Man U! I was a founder member of ABU !

I loathe football and attendant costumery and the insistence that a baby can be born a fan of Neanderthal Rovers or whoever but the baby isn’t an accessory that needs to reflect your clothing priorities. I find the idea that you’re happy for him to wear it in the house but not outside quite weird.

Riverlee · 04/08/2023 09:28

i’d probably dress baby in it when England are playing, with football mates etc, rather than for everyday use etc. However, it’s not worth a major battle over.

Yes, you need to let the poor mite make it's own bad choices in this regard.

Much as I'd like to raise a non football fan son, that's as much of an imposition as the kit.

Comefromaway · 04/08/2023 09:35

YABU

I used to dress dd in a football babygrow all the time when she was a baby (our local team & England) Unfortunately she grew up to support the rival local team so it did no good.

Saoirse82 · 04/08/2023 09:35

Definitely not an England one.

An Ireland one maybe.. 😆

Yup. I have an obsessive 11 year old Arsenal fan. Tiresome, but not my call.

Jibo · 04/08/2023 09:38

That's not a football strip! I thought you meant a shiny shirt with a big number on the back and shiny shorts! I don't like football but it's have no probably with that babygro as long as its cotton.

BCCoach · 04/08/2023 09:39

YANBU. Wearing sports kit of any kind when you are not actually participating in that sport is naff anyway. And wearing the kit of a team you don’t actually compete for doubly so.

Soakitup37 · 04/08/2023 09:40

good luck when the baby wants to wear nothing but football kits. That’ll be a bigger fight you have and one you will lose.

yabu, if dh didn’t like an outfit you picked and liked would he get to change it?

limons · 04/08/2023 09:40

Whoever dresses the baby gets to pick the outfit.

crapactually · 04/08/2023 09:41

You are being a snob but I would be too. I'd change him.

Even if it wasn't football related, that is one ugly babygro.

LTB
Seriously.

Firstly I couldn’t marry a “football” person and secondly anyone that thinks that awful synthetic fabric is acceptable should be shot.

Wow ... over reaction much? Leave your husband over a baby grow!

Yabu.

The World Cup is on.

I'm just really pleased so many blokes are giving this World Cup the attention it deserves.

This 👏
I'm so glad that girls have these amazing role models, and women's sport is being respected.
Football turns out to be an enjoyable game, I didn't know this!

Snowpaw · 04/08/2023 08:45

It’ll be covered in poo stains / regurgitated milk soon, I wouldn’t worry. Outfits don’t last long at that age!

Wouldn't it be awful if he did such a toxic poo/vom that the outfit had to be binned.

Maireas · 04/08/2023 09:44

I suspect it's a soft cotton, not that athletic/sports fabric?

Mariposista · 04/08/2023 09:50

I hate football but this is massively snobby. It’s hardly a top with an offensive slogan on it 🙄🙄🙄

Ha ha - so true!

You'll look back on one babygro with fondness when your 9 year old 'needs' the full new strip. Which of course changes every year. Funny that.

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 04/08/2023 09:51

That's not a football kit. It's a baby grow with the England badge on and (I presume) the pattern off the shirts. A football kit babygrow would be one of those which was printed to look like shirt, shorts, socks and boots

It's the World Cup, I'm not a football fan at all but I might occasionally wear an England shirt if we're playing during either World Cup.

Don't like what DH puts them in? Fine but don't complain when he stops helping. Or when he says he doesn't like the Barbie/Disney/Other franchise/whatever baby grow you put them in.

Mumdiva99 · 04/08/2023 09:52

ReluctantFishLady · 04/08/2023 08:41

I don't believe I've ever seen an ugly baby grow, but there you have it! Just change him if you don't like it. Take the photo for the friend, put something else on and he can wear these lovely pyjamas to bed tonight.

Life is too short, and they grow too fast, so put him in the lovely things and enjoy the cuteness when you take him out. DP can savrme this for a day when he has baby.

Error her DP does have a baby.......this baby.....

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 04/08/2023 09:53

And to all the snobs - do you also turn your noses up at those Harry Potter robe baby grows or Disney Princess dress baby grows etc? Or is it just sport you have an issue with?

Hadjab · 04/08/2023 09:56

You are being a massive snob, and I'm all for it!! I hate sportswear with a passion. My daughter put my grandson in a tracksuit the other day (it was gifted, she hates them as much as me). I picked him up and he slid off me!

Yep, it's 100% no to sportswear, character wear, slogan tees.
