To think Catherine Tyldesley is a CF - cakegate

I can’t help but feel that when you’re in a position of privilege and a celeb of any description, you shouldn’t by asking small independent businesses for free shit...

But, if you do, at least own it. The video of her belittling “the cake lady” really shows what a tramp she actually is.

Cakegate: Ex-Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley hits back after 'bizarre' row with Three Little Birds Bakery over free cakes

Three Little Birds Bakery said it declined a request from an events agency to make a cake and 100 cupcakes for the birthday of a "well-known" celebrity - later revealed to be Tyldesley - in exchange for promotion on social media and in a magazine.

Good question! I would have assumed it’s not declared as there’s no cash changing hands – have just checked and there’s actually a page on it on HMRC.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-part-exchanges-barters-and-set-offs

You definitely still pay VAT, looks like you wouldn’t necessarily pay income or corporation tax.

I do not think that has got anything to do with what social media influencers need to report on their tax return. This is looking at things from the perspective of the person that gave away their services, not the person that received them.

AutumnCrow · 04/08/2023 18:54

I’m just curious about the tax liabilities of this lifestyle. It’s interesting that pp mentioned there may be a liability for the gifter as well as the giftee.

I guess it may depend whether HMRC views ‘influencing’ and ‘promoting on my socials’ as work or not. But I know HMRC did come down harder on ‘hobby businesses’ some years ago.

floribunda18 · 04/08/2023 19:00

Many of them probably don't make enough to pay tax.

floribunda18 · 04/08/2023 19:01

And even less likely that they'd be over the VAT threshold. Even my plumber doesn't make enough to.charge VAT.

grass321 · 04/08/2023 19:15

Ooh. ‘Barter transactions’, income tax, it’s all happening in tax geek world

It's been a while since my ACA but I thought freebies would be taxable in some form, as with a benefit in kind. Although regulating and monitoring it would be almost impossible.

Email from party planners says celeb has 700k followers - she’s currently 647,000 presumably lost some with all this coming out?

Surprisingly she's gained around 900 new Instagram followers in the last 3 days, whereas up to then she was fairly steadily losing 20-30 followers a day.

Same here. In reality, anyrhing is taxable.

Honestly that isn’t a huge number in terms of popularity. Someone who’s gained a lot of positive attention quickly would be looking at several thousands followers very quickly. These will just be nosy buggers and a few Mean Girls with the ‘you ok babez’ mantra.

I'm a fully trained hairdresser (I do it on the side of my main job)

I cannot count how many times I've been asked for a cut/blow dry/colour/perm/'just a trim on my little ones hair'

'I'll pay for the colour/perm lotion' if I'm lucky-no thought of my time or skills

apparently its such an issue they actually covered this in my training with a warning not to allow freebies as doing hair is a skill and not a favour

CT is a cheeky cow-up until this,I didn't have a clue who she was

You want a party-then pay like the rest us have to-cut your cloth and all that

I had a friend of a friend call at my house and ask me to do her hair as she was going on a date at short notice. I said I would do it and only charge mates rates. Her face dropped and she said she thought I would do her a favour. I said it was a favour, that I was charging less than half price and that I would be delaying my kids evening routine on her behalf. She said she planned on tipping me. At the time she was managing a new bar/bistro that her cousin owned so I said I would do like for like. I would do her hair for the price I would charge at the salon and I would come to the bar at a time of my choosing and eat and drink to the value of the hair appointment. She of course said no and that she would get into trouble if she did that. 🤔 She decided to go with a messy bun.

She really showed herself up in the video she posted. She could have easily turned it around by being humble and gracious and giving proper paid custom to the 'baker lady'.

Through my own work (southern Europe) I am used to the low level celeb through to the A list (via my partners) grifting attempts.

I am admin but I am privy to a lot.

But mostly, we have to fend off so many 'influencers'. They are so brazen and expect so much.

It is particularly galling for me given what the pandemic did to hospitality and tourism in general. These grifters are ruthless and will come at you with threats of bad reviews wherever they can leave them.

I loathe them. I applaud the owner of this bakery. Enough of this parasitic entitlement from people who are only on the make. Freebies for chancers. We need to end this awful culture.

Well said.
Agree with every word.

I'm really confused now, I thought she had almost 700k followers not 7,000 but looking just now her ratio of historic likes doesn't seem to add up to those numbers.

Sorry, typo. I missed a zero but the point still stands, 700k followers is not really that much for a “celeb”. And many of them won’t be real accounts.

Does anyone remember her getting called out by the guy who plays David Platt for parking in a disabled bay at work? She was furious with him

https://www.able2uk.com/news/entertainment-news/corrie-star-believes-her-status-allows-her-to-park-in-disabled-bays

That is terrible! I wouldn't be surprised if more entitled skeletons come bursting out of her closet.

Gilmorehill · 05/08/2023 10:10

Fair play to David Platt (what’s his real name?) It takes some courage to call out a colleague on social media. Parking in a disabled bay is shitty behaviour. Maybe she wasn’t particularly well liked?

AutumnCrow · 05/08/2023 10:32

And there I was thinking that CT could rescue this by doing a joint charity event with 'Cake Lady', sending some of the cakes to NVRLND to say sorry for any misunderstanding with her instructions, inviting them all to the birthday(s) party, and doing a comedy Mrs Merton mea culpa for her Instagam. 'Well, viewers, it looks like I've made a right twat of meself!' People love that kind of redemptive self-deprecation.

But no. Jason 'Ugh' Manford has gone in to bat for her. Terrible move.

1993GoToo · 05/08/2023 11:02

😂

Wonder if he is with NVRLAND too?

blacknredsweeties · 05/08/2023 11:07

Although I agree with some of the above, what is written in this article is absolutely disgraceful.

Her parking in a disabled bay has nothing to do with what she used to look like and they are telling people to re post an old pic of her!!! WTF.

You're slamming someone for asking to repost a old picture of her tagged with revenge.....and you've obliged by reposting the said picture of her? 🤦🏻‍♀️ Well played!

blacknredsweeties · 05/08/2023 11:16

Otherwise people would ask what I meant.

I haven't posted to show you the photo that just happened to be in the middle.

blacknredsweeties · 05/08/2023 11:16

Absolute idiot.

Jack Shepherd. Yes good on him.

ilovebrie8 · 05/08/2023 12:26

@Acheeselovingneighbour very well said! This culture of freebies and influencers needs to end it’s just wrong. Sooner the bubble burst the better, so many grifters want endless hangouts insta littered with them freebie after freebie. She has shown her true colours has old Cath and is nasty. Three cheers to Jack Shepherd aka David Platt 🙂
