To think Catherine Tyldesley is a CF - cakegate

I can’t help but feel that when you’re in a position of privilege and a celeb of any description, you shouldn’t by asking small independent businesses for free shit...

But, if you do, at least own it. The video of her belittling “the cake lady” really shows what a tramp she actually is.

Cakegate: Ex-Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley hits back after 'bizarre' row with Three Little Birds Bakery over free cakes

Three Little Birds Bakery said it declined a request from an events agency to make a cake and 100 cupcakes for the birthday of a "well-known" celebrity - later revealed to be Tyldesley - in exchange for promotion on social media and in a magazine.

Apparently ten years ago, C4 news did a sting on Coronation st ‘stars’. They invited several to a hotel room and asked them to promote fake products ie stuff they couldn’t have used personally as they didn’t exist. CT was one of those caught out.

Puttana Aziendale - corporate prostitute' 😂

GenieGenealogy · 04/08/2023 15:01

That's true @Gilmorehill , i'd forgotten about that Dispatches.

https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/07/03/coronation-street-fake-goods-sting-channel-4-dispatches_n_3538602.html

So she's been at it for 10 years at least. Old habits die hard.

AutumnCrow · 04/08/2023 15:12

I wonder what influencers' self-assessment tax returns look like, seeing as how they get 'paid' in 'free stuff' for their 'work'.

Say an influencer 'promotes' a small business and in return receives goods worth £750. Would HMRC not see that as a potentially taxable transaction?

(Apologies for all the inverted commas.)

GenieGenealogy · 04/08/2023 15:14

Benefit in kind, I'd say. Just like normal people pay tax on their private medical insurance, company car etc.

Wonder if they grift accountants to do their tax return for free too?

Brefugee · 04/08/2023 15:16

wtf are "illegal sprinkles"?

Gilmorehill · 04/08/2023 15:19

What’s the name of the lady? Is it Bec? Her cakes look absolutely amazing. I’m in total awe of people who are have a successful business. She’s handled this situation wonderfully. Her success is built on solid foundations unlike people who try to grift a living on instagram.
I work in a school and we have a story we tell the kids which embodies our values. It’s about two men, one built his house on sand and the other on rock. Obviously the house on sand fell down. It’s all about building your life on solid foundations. I think it’s an important message to children these days who see so many celebrities making money with very little talent.

GenieGenealogy · 04/08/2023 15:43

Some of the colourings used to produce the very colourful hundreds and thousands sprinkles we all remember from our childhoods are banned in the UK. Some bakers import them from North America.

Brefugee · 04/08/2023 15:45

Blimey! there is a trade in illegal sprinkles? there MUST be a film about this. THERE MUST.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 04/08/2023 16:10

'Illegal sprinkles' sound like the reason irresponsible dog owners end up with an ASBO!

Absolutely. It could be called Sprinkly Blinders!

Dixiechickonhols · 04/08/2023 16:16

Honestly it’s a thing. Local cake shop near me got reported to trading standards a few years ago (rather than customer just telling them - they didn’t realise) so now if they post something with bright sprinkles they make a joke of it on instagram and emphasise the sprinkles are legal.

Dinopawus · 04/08/2023 16:22

Not familiar with the woman but that Ok feature makes me think she wants to be Suranne Jones.
Two lessons here. If you want it, pay for it. And if you fuck up, own it. Don't try to blame other people.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 04/08/2023 16:49

@Aprilx

Oh thank goodness. I was mistaking her with Katherine Kelly as well.

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 04/08/2023 17:03

I actually just read a Facebook thread on which a lady had gifted her a personalised handbag under the acknowledgement she would advertise it on social media and she didn't do it. Apparently she also pulled a similar stunt with a florist. It's all coming out now. I wish they'd go to the media because she would come off looking even worse than she already has.

Good question! I would have assumed it’s not declared as there’s no cash changing hands – have just checked and there’s actually a page on it on HMRC.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-part-exchanges-barters-and-set-offs

You definitely still pay VAT, looks like you wouldn’t necessarily pay income or corporation tax.

VAT: part-exchanges, barters and set-offs

How to account for VAT on goods that you give away, exchange or offset.

@CherryMaDeara I agree the bakery should push back on unreasonable requests, but to publicly shame in a such a passive aggressive manner, I wouldn't use them as it showed them to be just as unpleasant as CF and her crew.

How did they publicly shame her?

Aren't BIK taxable though?

That's v strange that they'll levy VAT but no income tax!

Acheeselovingneighbour · 04/08/2023 17:33

She really showed herself up in the video she posted. She could have easily turned it around by being humble and gracious and giving proper paid custom to the 'baker lady'.

Through my own work (southern Europe) I am used to the low level celeb through to the A list (via my partners) grifting attempts.

I am admin but I am privy to a lot.

But mostly, we have to fend off so many 'influencers'. They are so brazen and expect so much.

It is particularly galling for me given what the pandemic did to hospitality and tourism in general. These grifters are ruthless and will come at you with threats of bad reviews wherever they can leave them.

I loathe them. I applaud the owner of this bakery. Enough of this parasitic entitlement from people who are only on the make. Freebies for chancers. We need to end this awful culture.

Merryoldgoat · 04/08/2023 17:34

@Chickenkeev

BIK are a taxable benefit for employees and not relevant to self employed people.

Thanks, i thought so. But i've been away from accounting so long i wondered if something had changed.

Elmers · 04/08/2023 09:14

There are so many elements of this that make it farcical.

  • the fact they attempt to claim she's a big deal with lots of celeb friends (without naming her)
  • Any true celeb wouldn't need to be asking for freebies, they have brands sending them all sorts for free
  • That they seem to think having over 7000 followers is impressive. It might be for some everyday nobody like me, but for a big celeb, that's actually a bit of an embarrassing number
  • The percentage of those 7000 (of which who knows how many are bots) actually becoming paying customers of the cake lady would be absolutely miniscule - potentially zero, especially as it's something that can't be purchased online and posted
  • That CT tried to claim the bakery was always going to get paid and the company were being misrepresented when the lady shared a screenshot of the actual message which clearly stated "payment would be made in the form of promotion on their socials"
  • That they then sent legal threat to the cake lady, as if that was doing them a favour
  • That she even thought saying anything other than "oh I'm so sorry to the cake lady, of course I'd like to pay her" was wise.
  • The sheer arrogance of everyone other than the baker
As you might be able to tell, this one has really got under my skin.

I'm really confused now, I thought she had almost 700k followers not 7,000 but looking just now her ratio of historic likes doesn't seem to add up to those numbers.

Gilmorehill · 04/08/2023 18:30

I can’t believe she would have that number of followers. She wasn’t particularly popular when on Coronation Street and she’s been from it for a long time.

Dixiechickonhols · 04/08/2023 18:33

Email from party planners says celeb has 700k followers - she’s currently 647,000 presumably lost some with all this coming out?
