Just after everyone's opinions. I'm on an all inclusive holiday . Nothing flash . European destination. Hot sunny . 3*. Would you feel offended if a female sunbathes topless at the pool? Just for context I have done , but put bikini top on to go in pool and her drinks . It's literally just going topless when laying on sunbed . More context age range is babies up to 70+ . Lots of different shapes and weights of people . Lots of bellies make and female and lots of big boobs on men. Like I say this is just for context . Just interested in people's opinions. I'm with my husband on holiday .

I've sunbathed and swum naked and topless in various places around the world for 30+ years, including skinny dipping regularly here in the UK. But I've always been sensitive to the social rules of those places, always been discreet and have kept my togs on if there was a chance of causing others discomfort. I wouldn't take my top off when sunbathing around a hotel pool at the busiest time of year with loads of children likely to be around and people from all sorts of cultures, some of which wouldn't welcome the sight of my breasts, no matter how beautiful they were.

Why? Because my desire for a seamless tan doesn't override the right of others to enjoy their holiday experience. As others have said, going topless is something that people usually do on the beach. Go to the beach, OP, where it's more widely accepted.

I'd think you were desperate for attention.

Sounds like the same mindset that believes women wearing short skirts are "asking for it"

Over50usernamesNow · 03/08/2023 18:33

Why do you want to?

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 03/08/2023 18:33

Many years spent in the Canaries - by the pool no (although common in the 90s). Haven't seen anyone topless by the pool in the last 5 years.
Many topless women on the beach though, and that's fine.
In France on the beach very often. Small secluded bays, and often the women were local and in a secluded spot in between rocks. Unfortunately for them, this meant kids, rock pools and fishing nets 🤣

Why on earth do people compare this to a man going topless? It's not the same thing, and it's so lame to pretend that it is. Women have breasts. They are seen as sexual. Men do not. It's like saying, "well, my 5 year old hasn't got a top, on so why do I have to?". It's not a comparison that makes any sense.

Personally, I find my own breasts highly sexual. I am aroused if topless. I would not feel comfortable at all getting my breasts out in front of strange men and kids. Just no.

Would I judge you, if you did? Yes, in all honesty I would. I would think that you were attention seeking and that it was highly inappropriate. If you don't want tan lines, you can move straps across. Of course, you'll get a load of women saying, "your boobs, your choice", but if their DH was on the sunbed next to your sunbed, I doubt they'd be so enthusiastic. Especially if you have great boobs, and theirs pale in comparison.

But this is MN, and often people don't say what they really feel.

Absolutely agree

FettleOfKish · 03/08/2023 18:36

At the beach absolutely crack on. At the hotel pool, I'd be a bit more Hmm

My job requires me to visit a lot of hotels in European destinations and it's become less and less common to see people sunbathing topless around the pool, I've literally just come back from a Spanish island and didn't see anyone topless by the pool. Some hotels go so far as to state that bikini tops are required.

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 03/08/2023 18:37

Breasts are also secondary sexual organs, so yes men will always want a look, take pics (hello brother 51 🙄) let them, but do you really want that?

DongsOfPraise · 03/08/2023 18:37

I would and have gone topless loads. It’s pretty normal in a lot of Europe and many people don’t bat an eye. Like you, I always wore a top in the pool and would never walk to the bar or whatever topless.

HowmuchcanispendatChristmas · 03/08/2023 18:38

Susuwatariandkodama · 03/08/2023 18:16

No and honestly I would judge anyone who does, it’s bad enough men that are allowed to walk around in speedos, I really don’t want to see anyone in the nude.

Plenty of Speedos here. Not my husband's choice of swimwear but I'm not judging those that do wear them.

I am from southern Europe and it is normal to see topless women at the beach but I have never seen any by the pool (unsure if it is allowed).

Nanny0gg · 03/08/2023 18:45

HowmuchcanispendatChristmas · 03/08/2023 16:17

That's what I think too. Very interested in others opinions though .

Normal at the beach

Wouldn't particularly like it at the pool

KinderCat · 03/08/2023 18:46

I do it and would not judge others who did. Also wouldn't really care if I was judged tbh. It's a holiday and I am unlikely to see any of those people again so do whatever I am most comfortable with. They are just breasts at the end of the day.

Byronshelley · 03/08/2023 18:46

I think it's a bit 'look at me' if you're on a public beach or at a public pool. Are tan lines that bad? If I was on holiday with my mates and one of them whipped off the bikini top, I would think wtf. It's very attention-seeking if hardly anyone else is doing it. If you're on a nudist beach in Germany or something, obviously it's fine.

BarryK3nt · 03/08/2023 18:47

I wouldn’t even sunbathe topless in my own garden because I don’t like the thought of anyone looking out their window at me, but I absolutely do not have a problem with other women doing it.

GoodChat · 03/08/2023 18:47

Plenty of Speedos here. Not my husband's choice of swimwear but I'm not judging those that do wear them.

Would you be judging if they got their knobs out to avoid tan lines?

etinaz · 03/08/2023 18:48

I wouldn't, because I never sunbathe and I would hate to have a tan anyway. I wouldn't ever judge another woman for doing so.

However, the 'it's only boobs' and 'men do it all the time' lines that are trotted out all the time are truly the very thin end of the wedge. Women's bodies have been/are sexualised to an appalling degree, and so unfortunately, the playing field here is far from level.

The way men and women's topless bodies are perceived are not equal. I don't think we achieve equality here by doing the same as men. It's like a false veneer of being 'equal' while we know it's not actually the case at all.

Aavalon57 · 03/08/2023 18:48

I think context is everything. At a private villa, the beach, an adult-only resort fine, but not really when it's at a pool with families around.

Custardslices · 03/08/2023 18:50

If you did go top less how would you have a good tan for where your bikini bottoms are?

If you were sat next to my children by a pool top less I wouldn't be impressed

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 03/08/2023 18:51

It’s really common on the beach in Greece, much less so at the pool in Spanish resorts (ime).
Personally I wouldn’t, maybe undo the straps while lying on my front to avoid tan lines, but that’s my limit. Not particularly offended by anyone else though.

EachandEveryone · 03/08/2023 18:52

I just dont think its very fashionable these days as we are so much more aware of sun damage. Tan lines dont bother me in the slightest.

windmill26 · 03/08/2023 18:55

Eyesopenwideawake · 03/08/2023 18:25

@AncientBallerina Not a problem in Portugal, all ages, all sizes. No issue at all.

We have been going to the Algarve for a few years and I have never seen a topless woman by the pool. I would go as far as saying that at the hotel we go to it is not allowed.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 03/08/2023 18:56

I wouldn't but it wouldn't bother me one not if anyone else did

helpfulperson · 03/08/2023 18:57

it's interesting how many people seem to feel that British standards should be adhered to in Europe. Like we are right about these things and they are wrong.

Of course there is nothing wrong with you doing it if it is the cultural norm wherever you are.

saffronsoup · 03/08/2023 18:57

As long as it is legal and culturally appropriate, then it is your choice.

Personally I would see it as attention seeking as there is really no benefit in life to having tanned nipples but if you want an excess of sun exposure and to make sure everyone sees your tits - then go for it.

And men and women's breasts are seen differently socioculturally which is why it is sexual assault to touch a woman's breasts but not to touch a man's breast.

stillavid · 03/08/2023 18:57

I used to sunbathe topless loads in my 20's but wouldn't now mostly due to the fact that my boobs are not what they were.

But, I think it is way less common now - I haven't seen anyone sunbathing topless at any hotel in Europe I have been too in the last few years. As you mentioned types of hotel - these are five star in Spain and Italy.

I think other posters are right and people just don't do it so much now since they don't want to end up on someone's camera roll.

I wouldn't judge you but would think it a little odd as so outside the norm nowadays.

With regards to tan lines - a strapless bikini would suffice surely?
