Just after everyone's opinions. I'm on an all inclusive holiday . Nothing flash . European destination. Hot sunny . 3*. Would you feel offended if a female sunbathes topless at the pool? Just for context I have done , but put bikini top on to go in pool and her drinks . It's literally just going topless when laying on sunbed . More context age range is babies up to 70+ . Lots of different shapes and weights of people . Lots of bellies make and female and lots of big boobs on men. Like I say this is just for context . Just interested in people's opinions. I'm with my husband on holiday .

I think as long as its accepted legally and culturally where you are, fine. But I find it really distasteful when women are so eager to get their tits out that they'll disregard the accepted norms of where they are, for example in many Caribbean countries it just isn't acceptable.

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 03/08/2023 19:30

I don’t understand the wanting no tan lines reason.

Wearing a boob tube type top or putting the straps down will mean you don’t have tan lines.

Yes you’ll still have them under the actual bikini but what clothes do you wear that expose these areas anyway?

fullbloom87 · 03/08/2023 19:30

As long as there weren't children around and nudity was allowed then fine.

WaltzingWaters · 03/08/2023 19:31

Absolutely. Go for it.

fullbloom87 · 03/08/2023 19:32

But agree others that I wouldn't do it too many phones with cameras about and perverts.

Hurryupdoris · 03/08/2023 19:35

I used to sunbathe topless on the beach abroad many years ago when I was in my twenties and thirties. I wouldn't now as my boobs have gone south with age and having my dc's😫it doesn't bother me if I see someone sunbathe topless on holiday.
I have just come home from my holiday abroad. The one thing I did notice around the pool/beach was lots of women wearing lovely swim wear/bikinis. All shapes and sizes. They look beautiful and I have not been confident with my belly since having my dc's. I work out alot but can't seem to loose my belly. I won't go topless but I will definitely be wearing my costume without my wrap. It really was an eye opener and it is down to body confidence. They looked lovely.

stayathomer · 03/08/2023 19:35

I’m an absolute prude and it wouldn’t bother me at all! Someone asked above about would you mind a man doing it and personally I think more men should cover up and wear tee shirts- am fed up of seeing men topless😅

stayathomer · 03/08/2023 19:38

Hurryupdoris
Theres a lovely post somewhere with a lady telling people to just not worry about how you look around the pool and enjoy your holiday. It’s fab!

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 03/08/2023 19:41

"I have vividly unpleasant memories of a holiday in Fuerteventura as a child where a large bunch of otherwise normal Brits who became friendly with our group were discussing the various breasts on display at the pool and rated them within earshot of me. They were saying what everyone else was thinking, I observed many other people staring, pointing, winking at their friends and showing their sexual interest in the displays. For children to be around that sort of atmosphere is deeply, deeply unpleasant regardless of the original intentions of the women who go topless".

God, some adults really are completely oblivious to how their own inappropriate behaviour impacts on kids, aren't they?

Discussing and rating breasts obviously enough that you as a child picked up on it, ffs.

No doubt they'd have been loudly judging the women's attributes, even if they were covered up.

No wonder so many of us grow up with body hang-ups.

Rewis · 03/08/2023 19:44

I wouldn't be offended nor would I judge them. However I wouldn't do it at the hotel pool unless it was explicitly said it was ok or that others were doing it. But I thibk doing it at thw beach is fine. And I have no explanation why I think this way 😅

PinkTonic · 03/08/2023 19:45

I haven’t noticed many boobs round the pool lately but this year and last I’ve seen far more naked arse and barely covered undercarriage than I wished to. I think if you’re that worried about tan lines use a suitable beach or get a private pool. And if you’re at a public pool and wearing a thong keep your legs together. Please.

Batalax · 03/08/2023 19:50

I used to years ago when it was more common, but I’d feel a bit awkward nowadays as so few people do it. Plus I don’t have the figure anymore and it’s so unusual I wouldn’t want people noticing. Which they will do.

Alwaystheplusone · 03/08/2023 19:50

I think beach is fine but probably a no if it’s a pool at a hotel

Why on earth do people compare this to a man going topless? It's not the same thing, and it's so lame to pretend that it is. Women have breasts. They are seen as sexual. Men do not. It's like saying, "well, my 5 year old hasn't got a top, on so why do I have to?". It's not a comparison that makes any sense.

Personally, I find my own breasts highly sexual. I am aroused if topless. I would not feel comfortable at all getting my breasts out in front of strange men and kids. Just no.

Would I judge you, if you did? Yes, in all honesty I would. I would think that you were attention seeking and that it was highly inappropriate. If you don't want tan lines, you can move straps across. Of course, you'll get a load of women saying, "your boobs, your choice", but if their DH was on the sunbed next to your sunbed, I doubt they'd be so enthusiastic. Especially if you have great boobs, and theirs pale in comparison.

But this is MN, and often people don't say what they really feel.

I think there is a comparison with men going topless. At puberty men develop muscular and hairy chests, women develop fatty breasts. However from that age men are free to show off their developments whereas women are not ... and it is usually women who are most vocal in maintaining this inequality by expressing disapproval and outrage.
I am not saying it is right or wrong just something that has always struck me as another self imposed inequality.

FabFitFifties · 03/08/2023 19:54

I no longer go abroad (dog put an end to it for many years), I'm very suprised this isn't the norm any more!

CharlieBoo · 03/08/2023 19:55

It’s not as common as it was in the 80’s. I remember my first holiday abroad aged 8 and my brother was absolutely mesmerised by these naked ladies! He’s get in the pool with his goggles on!

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid but I wouldn’t do it myself

BestestBrownies · 03/08/2023 19:57

Just here for the drip-feed where OP tells us some pasty yank wearing speedos almost entirely obscured by his gut (and proudly displaying a pair of naked, wobbly moobs twice the size of her own tits), has complained

Maireas · 03/08/2023 19:57

I think from a young age women are conscious of the need to protect themselves, and not to appear "sexually available". All too often men will use any excuse and blame any behaviour as "asking for it". It's a sad state of affairs. Our bodies are sexualised and policed. As a result, many girls and women understandably police themselves.

RedTedBoom · 03/08/2023 20:01

I gauge where I am & the people present, but yes definitely do go topless, try to get rid of the tan lines I have from working outside in the UK

Serendipitoushedgehog · 03/08/2023 20:03

I wouldn’t be offended. I don’t think it’s very classy.

Vicliz24 · 03/08/2023 20:04

When I was on holiday recently barely anyone besides me was topless on the beach but almost every girl was wearing a thong bikini. I personally find breasts a lot more pleasant.

Rugbyballhead · 03/08/2023 20:04

I'm not bothered! My son would giggle and say, 'boobies!' but then he would just get on with the important business of playing with his toys in the pool. Anyone who feels uncomfortable can just divert their eyes elsewhere.

This made me properly belly laugh. 😂 Something tells me you've seen some lips...

Anyhoodaloo · 03/08/2023 20:11

I'd think you were wanting men to look at you. Even if that's genuinely not the reason, I'd still think it was and I bet a lot of other people would too. But if you're not bothered about that, crack on.

macrowave · 03/08/2023 20:21

A little bit off-topic, but one thing that I always think is worth mentioning whenever people talk about nudity and double standards:

In many cultures, toplessness - both female AND male - is strictly reserved for the beach/pool. Spanish people do not enjoy the sight of topless male tourists wandering through the city streets or, worse, sitting on the terrace of a bar. It is culturally unacceptable. In fact, several cities with lots of tourism consider it an offence, and men can get fined - usually around 300 - 500€. Italy, France and Greece have similar cultural norms.

Male holidaymakers should pay attention to local norms just as much as women.
