To take all the reduced meat?

ballipp · 03/08/2023 15:37

So last night around 6pm I went to the supermarket and specifically went for the 90% off bargains
I went to the main reduced fridge (after waiting for 15 mins for them to reduce ) and got 2 packs of roast potatoes 33p each ,3 packs of bbq chicken legs for 46p each
pork kebabs for 44p each
Then normally 15 mins later they bring down the reduced meat that day.
There was about 5 people waiting around and I seen the butcher fill his green tub up with the meat and leave it on the counter
So I walk up (everyone was just waiting by the reduced fridge and didn't see what he had done )
I walk up and got 2 steaks 59p each
A beef joint for £1.03p
A pork joint for 43p
Two chickens 38p each and 4 packs of burgers 26p each.
Would you have done the same ?
Or left some for someone else
My freezer is now full for the month and that came to well under £6/£7

This is when I wish I had a massive freezer!

I probably wouldn’t have taken quite so much, but then again the next person might have just taken it all, so it’s hard to say “yes that would go to someone in need”

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 03/08/2023 16:30

So you can eat till September, but because of you some people may not have food this weekend? I don't think that technically you did anything wrong, but morally, it was really mean of you.

Mammajay · 03/08/2023 16:31

Crikey where do you get reduced meat at ,6 pm on a Wednesday

Lochroy · 03/08/2023 16:31

ballipp · 03/08/2023 16:27

I'm not minted in the slightest unfortunately
Not drip feeding but put it this way I have less than £200 to last the month

Which to some people is actually a heck of a lot.
Why couldn't you have come back more regularly to pick up items little and often. By doing what you did, you potentially forced people worse off than yourself into a situation where they couldn't afford anything and ended up with nothing. That's the shitty part about what you did.

CheersToMe · 03/08/2023 16:31

How is it outing? Don't be ridiculous!

DH regularly pops into store to pick up bargains, some go in the freezer, some we eat over the next couple of days. But he wouldn't take a load in one go, especially if other people were waiting I hope

thedancingbear · 03/08/2023 16:28

Do you want to ask for the thread to be deleted, OP? It’s terribly outing.

How is it outing unless someone goes round and looks in her freezer?!

ballipp · 03/08/2023 16:31

@Mammajay Morrison's Manchester

In the 1990's in the days before food banks. We were self employed and our business was struggling. We went months without any wages so we could pay our staff. Our savings were going on bills and mortgage. I had a 4 year old and a 1 year old. DHSS wouldn't give us any benefits as it was our choice to work with out pay.
Almost every night I walked to my local supermarket at the reducing time. I barely managed to get anything. Same faces filling their trolleys with everything that they could grab. I used to leave fighting back tears.
It was in the days of BOGOF's and luckily my parents would give me the free items. They didn't have much money to spare.
Please leave some for others. You really don't know what they are going through.

ballipp · 03/08/2023 16:32

@Lochroy it's a £4.50 round trip on the bus
So not really any point going daily as I wouldn't be saving anything

i didnt know morrison's reduced by that much , its a shame other supermarkets cant reduce theirs by 90% it would help so many people out .

EandKDJ · 03/08/2023 16:33

I can't actually believe that this question was asked in the first place. Very selfish behaviour, no thought for anyone but yourself OP.

Chickenkeev · 03/08/2023 16:33

OP, where is your solidarity here? You're potentially screwing over people in the same or worse poition than you are. How would you feel if you were watching someone else hoovering up all the affordable food? You could have done it over the couple of weeks at least

YourNameGoesHere · 03/08/2023 16:33

GalileoHumpkins · 03/08/2023 16:31

The poster is referring to what happens when threads normally don't go the way the OP expected and they inevitably get deleted because they are outing.

I don't understand why the OP continues to insist it's fine when they would probably be furious if they'd have been one of the 5 people waiting.

Andanotherone01 · 03/08/2023 16:33

YABU for saying “I seen”. You are also unreasonable for being selfish.

User165753 · 03/08/2023 16:33

Waitrose used to be good for reductions, don't know if it still is as I never go in at that time.

ballipp · 03/08/2023 16:33

@pavillion1 I didn't know either till I looked on YouTube and seen the 90% off hauls

OP posts:
Saracen · 03/08/2023 16:34

I don't think you did anything wrong. You were in the right place at the right time.

And while it may or may not apply on this occasion, if an item isn't bought then it will go to waste. The point of the reduction is to make sure that doesn't happen. If people refrain from buying, there's a risk of waste.

User165753 · 03/08/2023 16:34

The other people should have been more observant

Hannahsbananas · 03/08/2023 16:35

You didn’t even wait for the food to be put in the fridge before you were on it like a starving mongrel…
Shameful.

Goodviibrations · 03/08/2023 16:36

YABU.

Go vegan.

Lou670 · 03/08/2023 16:36

@Hannahsbananas spot on comment. I was thinking the same.

greenteaandmarshmallows · 03/08/2023 16:36

ballipp · 03/08/2023 15:42

There was plenty of fish left and lamb etc
I just took things I knew we would eat

Find then. But tbh you should have taken a variety really rather than grab all the burgers. Are you really going to eat 4 packets of burgers in a month

Kernsworld · 03/08/2023 16:36

I have never seen people waiting. I’ve seen the videos on YouTube of people waiting and staff using barriers as they put the reduced stuff out and then the scrum to get their hands on it. But I’ve never seen this is real life in my town.

Our reduced section literally always has meat joints and steak and chicken and fish etc in it. They reduce it in the morning if it’s up that day, and reduce further near closing time but there is never a pile of people. And somestimes at closing, there is still stuff there! No one is grabbing it all up or fighting over it. People take what they want or will actually use and leave stuff for others.

Have you seen it when theu put it in the fridge? It's like seagulls. People literally are starving desperate.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 03/08/2023 16:37

Why are you actually asking? you seem to be deliberately setting yourself up for criticism. What is your reason for doing that.

By the way, I don't know how many people you are feeding, but that much meat would last me (I live alone) a couple of months. Admittedly I am not a big meat eater.
