To take all the reduced meat?

ballipp · 03/08/2023 15:37

So last night around 6pm I went to the supermarket and specifically went for the 90% off bargains
I went to the main reduced fridge (after waiting for 15 mins for them to reduce ) and got 2 packs of roast potatoes 33p each ,3 packs of bbq chicken legs for 46p each
pork kebabs for 44p each
Then normally 15 mins later they bring down the reduced meat that day.
There was about 5 people waiting around and I seen the butcher fill his green tub up with the meat and leave it on the counter
So I walk up (everyone was just waiting by the reduced fridge and didn't see what he had done )
I walk up and got 2 steaks 59p each
A beef joint for £1.03p
A pork joint for 43p
Two chickens 38p each and 4 packs of burgers 26p each.
Would you have done the same ?
Or left some for someone else
My freezer is now full for the month and that came to well under £6/£7

OP you asked if you were unreasonable and the answer you’ve got is Yes and selfish to boot. Question asked, answered. You can’t drip feed to justify yourself

Dotjones · 03/08/2023 16:07

I don't see a problem with this. The supermarket has the stuff marked up because they want to sell it quickly. The OP bought it. Nothing wrong with that.

Starseeking · 03/08/2023 16:07

No I wouldn't have done the same, I'd have left some for others, particularly as at least 5 people were waiting.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 03/08/2023 16:08

You knew 5 people were waiting and took loads for yourself anyway. For some of those people, that might be the difference between eating last night and not. So yes, you are very selfish.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 03/08/2023 16:08

It depends how desperate you are and if you actually need it. If you're not actually struggling, then you're not just greedy, you're a dick.

GetUpStandUp4 · 03/08/2023 16:08

agreed. there are lots of people including parents living hand to mouth at the moment. People who don't eat unless they can get reduced items. taking that much is definitely selfish. have some consideration for others who need those bargains to live, not just store for another day. so many people using food banks at the moment.

I've started having to buy reduced food - and I mean HAVE to, or we do not eat.
My heart sinks when I see someone take literally everything they can get their hands on. I really could cry.
Please do not do it again and try to think of others.

I'd assume of she can afford enough for a month she's not that broke. Even if it is cut price.

There was plenty of fish left and lamb etc
I just took things I knew we would eat

Did you take all the reduced meat or not?

Danikm151 · 03/08/2023 16:12

I say you got lucky.
I’ve worked out Monday after work is the best day to go to my local lidl for reduced meat.
60% off so I usually spend about £8-£10and the freezer is stocked up for a good month or so. I go around payday.
There’s always plenty so I don’t feel guilty it would go to waste otherwise.

cymbidium · 03/08/2023 16:12

…and then you woke up.

GodisaBC · 03/08/2023 16:12

So you see 5 x £10 on the floor and no one’s around. Do you take £10 and leave £40 for others to find.
op you did nothing wrong, there are 30 days left of a month for others to get their meat.

It cost £6, that’s not an extortionate amount.

UncertainSmiler · 03/08/2023 16:13

Yeah, pretty selfish behaviour

PickledMuffin · 03/08/2023 16:13

😦 i wouldn't have taken it all. Others also need a bargain or two.

But the others were left with full price choices? And 6 quid is make or break for lots of people. That's why there are food banks.

SouthLondonMum22 · 03/08/2023 16:16

You got lucky, you were in the right place. Next time, it very well might be one of those 5 people who would very likely take it all too.

They want it cleared, hence the reduction. You didn't do anything wrong.

User165753 · 03/08/2023 16:16

It's fine OP

Don't give her ideas, she'll be digging through the donation box next.

It's one of those things where you're completely within your rights to do it so there's nothing to feel guilty about... but unless you are in truly dire straits, it would have behoven you to leave some for the others and let them know it was there.

PoshPineapple · 03/08/2023 16:20

Incredibly selfish, more so that you pounced before it had even been put on the shelves.

Let's hope it's not rancid when you go to defrost it and gives you the galloping payaka, eh?

GalileoHumpkins · 03/08/2023 16:21

38p for a chicken? I hope it lasts you a good week for that price.

Chickenkeev · 03/08/2023 16:23

Are there so many on here that have been on the bones of their arse at times? Or don't realise that financial circumstances can change in the blink of an eye? It's pretty bad to grab all the cheap food (for the sake of being thrifty it seems, OP hasn't elaborated on that). Of course, some of the waiting people could be doing the same but some may genuinely be doing it as they are poor but want to get a bit of decent food for a price that's within a limited budget.

Caffeineislife · 03/08/2023 16:23

We've finally found someone who we know for definite would have been stockpiling all the loo roll, flour, hand sanitizer, hand soap and medicine during Covid. At least they will have enough of all those items until 2050.

There are many people (especially in school holidays) who are relying on that reduced meat to make a meal (probably the only one they will have that day) for their family. It is very very poor form to take as much as you did knowing people were waiting - even more so when you are going to freeze most of it and brag about your bargains.
