Im in the northeast and its cold its more like winter here

Maximum temperatures around 7 degrees?!

Teajenny7 · 02/08/2023 21:03

Our heating has kicked in a couple of times.
I took a hot water bottle to bed last night.
By the way I live in southern home counties.
It is cold and damp.

BooneyBeautiful · 02/08/2023 21:19

I turn my heating off at the timer in the summer, so even if it were to get bitterly cold, the heating doesn't automatically come on. I have to make a conscious effort to turn it on come the autumn/winter.

bemusedmoose · 02/08/2023 21:37

Seriously!? I know it's a crap summer weather wise (though secretly im not too fussed because i really don't like the UK when it's hot) but im still in shorts and a tshirt and have the doors and windows open (unless the rain starts coming in). Has your lodger not heard of layers!? We dont put the heating on in my house unless you have a tshirt plus jumper and slippers and are still cold. Even then we usually just have a blanket on the sofa for a bit. Means we only really run the heating from November - march unless there is extreme weather (have had snow in late april). Im not paying to heat the house so people can live in a Jamaican climate all year round. Plus it's better for the body to have the acclimatisation between seasons. Also means you are better at being outdoors in winter without being uncomfortably cold or wrapped in so many layers it's uncomfortable. We also dont have the heating on over night unless it's below freezing. Goes off just after we get into bed and comes on about 20 mins before we get up. Then off for most of the day and back on late afternoon. If we have jumpers and slippers on and are cozy heating stays off no matter what time of year. People are getting far too soft these days - must cost them a fortune!

You need to tell them to layer up or move on i think.

Aplume · 02/08/2023 21:40

Fascinating. But it is her lodger's home too.

No she's lodging. Not her house. Temporary lodging

Is it really that cold???

Everyone obviously feels the cold differently - through the summer months our heating is on for an hour in the morning and a few hours in the evening to warm the house through and to dry towels, coats, boots etc. I think the only days it's not been on this year is when it was really hot early June. Reading the thread I feel even though we're mostly outside workers we're more nesh than most 😬

wellstopdoingitthen · 02/08/2023 22:10

People feel the cold differently. I am comfortable in a thin t-shirt whilst my dh is shivering in a long sleeved top with a hoody on top. Currently staying in a holiday cottage where the owner has ‘locked’ the thermostat so we can’t put the heating on.

Rewis · 02/08/2023 22:12

My bf wanted to put it on. I said no and we wore long pants and hoodie and watched a movie under duvet. For me it's a principle.of not needing heating in July 😅

starfishmummy · 02/08/2023 22:19

I'm a cold person and have just about managed not to out ours on by wearing two cardigans and sitting in the evening under my heated throw; so I don't think she's unreasonable to want it on.

Smellsliketeen · 02/08/2023 22:41

RainyWeekend · 01/08/2023 17:55

Your lodger put on the heating!!! The central heating????

What the Fuck!!!

It's your house! How come the lodger thinks it's ok to put the heating on? Are they a new lodger?

Is it really this cut throat? I wouldn’t begrudge anyone staying with me to put the fire on or mention they are chilly so the heating can be used.
I understand that bills are probably higher, but if I had a landlord who was so uptime about the use of basic facilities it would put me off completely. Id prefer to stay in air b, hotel or any other option. The reasoning of the heating doesn’t need to be on during summer falls short if you have an older property, which should be heated periodically for maintenance.
Really OP I’m sure you benefit from your lodger, enough thst

Jk987 · 02/08/2023 23:01

Glad I don't lodge with you. Doesn't sound friendly or welcoming and I'd be freezing if you had your way!

Passenger42 · 02/08/2023 23:05

It’s cold but it’s nothing that cannot be sorted with wearing a jumper, leggings and a pair of socks! Tell her your not made of money and if she wants the heating on then it’s an extra £10 a week until she leaves staring from this week.

Fluffmum · 02/08/2023 23:51

Yup I’m freezing

Twyford · 03/08/2023 00:34

Aplume · 02/08/2023 19:32

You sound tight. It's been raining here all day and I came home from work soaked and put the heating on. I did that because it's my home and I'm cold. The home you are talking about is also your lodger's home. Putting on the heating in one's own home is a perfectly normal act. If you don't want people to make those decisions in your home, don't share it with them.

Well, you're free to do that on the basis that you are paying the heating bills, though it seems a bit mad when you could just change out of your wet clothes and put something warm on. The lodger presumably isn't permanently wet and must know that if they put the heating on it will cost OP more which is at best pretty rude. It's also poor policy as it it's likely to precipitate their rent going up and/or the lodging arrangement being terminated.

I would be asking to put the heat in
Or buying a blow fan....

That's still five months of the year..... which is what I try and do.

I'm in a village near Guildford, Surrey and not had heating on since mid March. It's a flat over 2 floors, single glazed windows and I'm wearing sleep shorts and a cami top atm. Mind you, I prefer cooler weather. It's 21° indoors right now.

Dulra · 03/08/2023 08:35

To me it is not about it being cold it is the fact that I have got soaked so many times even with brolly and raincoat then when I get home I need to put heating on temporarily to warm up and try and dry my wet shoes. It is the rain and the damp that is getting to me I know the temperatures aren't too low but they feel low when all your clothes are soaking wet
