@AvengedQuince she constantly keeps the bathroom window open....

In winter? I constantly keep mine open in summer.

Glitterblue · 02/08/2023 05:50

Southern Scotland here and its not cold enough for the heating.

In winter, I was heating the kitchen to 16 degrees when we were eating in there. The night before last while we were eating it was 14 degrees.

No heating needs to go on, we won’t die at 14 degrees, but most people wouldn’t find that comfortable

Yes 14 is low, I’d be uncomfortable with it being that cold indoors. Surely in August the indoor temp isn’t going to be that low you require the heating on unless you’re elderly / unwell? My flat is still showing as 23 degrees the last few days, and I’ve got the AC machine running on and off still. It’s my first full winter in this flat but I don’t think it will need to go on until November time. Even my old much bigger house I wouldn’t put the heating on in August, even before the price rises but at the cost it is now, not a chance. Get a jumper on, go for a run! Or waste money I guess, if that’s what people want

Splat92 · 02/08/2023 07:01

People have wildly different tolerances for heat/cold. I feel the cold badly and I'll have the heating on if it gets below about 23 but I also won't put the air con on unless the temp is over 40 (I'm in Australia) as I don't mind the heat.

Not that cold in the south east

Not everyone lives in the south East!

FFS...The poster never said that did she? Everyone on here is saying where they're from in the UK, it sounds like you just want have a dig at Southerners

Harlechchick · 01/08/2023 18:38

Yes, it makes a huge difference depending on the type of housing involved. Some houses seem to leak heat at an alarming rate, others like my Dad's flat - well, he's lived there for 3 years and has never (seriously!!) had the heating on.
He's in his 80's & even though I've visited on many a bitter winter's day, it feels very pleasantly warm (benefiting from the surrounding flats who must have theirs on high I suppose). He isn't neglecting himself, despite how it sounds!

Yeah I’ve recently moved into a flat and it’s amazing how much heat you get from surrounding flats. I’ve had to buy an AC machine so that will probably cancel out winter savings!

Certainly not in London. Friends of mine elsewhere in the country report having put their heating on in the past few weeks.

However, it’s all very well to be cranking up the heating if you’re not paying. Lodgers should be considerate and think about what they’d do if they were paying for it, imo.

Lodgers to pay. Its guests that don't.

My flat is still showing as 23 degrees the last few days, and I’ve got the AC machine running on and off still. You've explained it further on - you're surrounded by flats. I'm in a stone house with no cavities to insulate. Over the course of a few cold days the house loses heat and would presumably get to near ambient with no heating.

On the other hand, I don't have to waste money and fuel on air conditioning in hot weather.

Lozois99 · 02/08/2023 12:22

I put it on for an hour because everything felt so damp after all the rain and humidity. Helped loads

If monthly rent includes heat then YABU.

20.5 degrees is a comfortable temperature, if she put the heating on to get to 20 from 15 which would feel chilly then I cant see the issue.

INeedAnotherName · 02/08/2023 13:17

I'm not understanding your display. Are you saying the temp in your hallway is caused by heating (and you know for certain the boiler is on)? My hallway temp simioar by sunlight through a window so it's perfectly reasonable to see why her bedroom temp is similar. The downstairs temp is not showing at all so I would assume the boiler has NOT been on.

If the thermostat is st 15⁰C then even with the heating switched to 'on' your heaters won't heat as the room temperature is too high.

You are getting worked up about nothing and the lodger is not costing you any extra

No it wasn't aimed at you, it was an answer to me saying my house had dropped to 14 in answer to someone claiming that there was no need in the UK for anyone to have heating on in the summer.

dementedpixie · 02/08/2023 13:28

She would have to actually adjust the thermostat to above the room temperature to get the heating to kick in. My heating is on a timer but as the thermostat is turned low the heaters don't actually heat up even when the heating is 'on'. Maybe you just don't understand how your heating system works!

She's turning it on manually, on her radiator, which has a smart TRV. All radiators in bedrooms and downstairs have smart TRVs , zone controlled.

So perhaps stop with the weirdo misunderstood post.

What. case law? Since when did having your house at 22 degrees constitute not heating it properly? And what would damages be compensating for?

nalabae · 02/08/2023 15:16

No she/he better put on some jumpers has he/she seen the price of utilities
