Think you need to speak to your lodger, buy him a hot water bottle, tell him to put a jumper on.
Is it a combi boiler, if so you can turn it off on the actual boiler itself so if he turns up the thermostat it wont come on , mine went off April.

You can't turn it of on the actual boiler without turning of the hot water, which means no showers or warm hand washing etc

To me it is not about it being cold it is the fact that I have got soaked so many times even with brolly and raincoat then when I get home I need to put heating on temporarily to warm up and try and dry my wet shoes. It is the rain and the damp that is getting to me I know the temperatures aren't too low but they feel low when all your clothes are soaking wet

Why do you keep on getting wet

If it is a combi boiler most have the facility to enable you to turn off heat but leave hot water on, do a quick google it will tell you how.

Why do you keep on getting wet

Because I am out and about cycling walking getting kids to camps etc and we have had quite bad downpours out of nowhere which gets you and your feet quite wet. Not sure why you think this is unusual 🤔

ScotsBluebell · 03/08/2023 10:54

We haven't put the heating on. But we have used the dehumidifier.

Teajenny7 · 03/08/2023 11:00

How do we know the lodger hasn't already got warm layers on?
Nor do we know the condition of the property.
Or where this property is located.
By taking in a lodger you can earn about 7000 tax free.
When you get soaked through you can feel damp and cold.
Yesterday, I got caught in a really heavy shower.
I hadn't been out for more than 5 minutes and the heavens opened. My bottom half was completely soaked. Shoes were still wet this morning as was my rain jacket.
Dripping jacket and dog made the floor wet.
I ended up on the couch with blanket and hot water bottle.
In hindsight it would have been better to put the heating on for an hour to help take the damp out the house.

You know that's not the norm....

We had single figure temperatures some evenings last week. Because the days were chilly for the time of year there was no residual warmth on the house.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 03/08/2023 12:35

It's normal to have the bathroom window open after showering, but its not normal to have the heating on in August!

FlipFlop1987 · 03/08/2023 13:54

I’m a cold person, live on the NE coast. It’s always a lot colder and very windy here and I’m first to say I’m cold but I think I’ve worn a hoodie a handful of times in the last couple of months. I won’t consider the heating going on until we’re in October, until then I’ll add another layer. (Official heating season is October-April in our house!)

pollymere · 03/08/2023 19:25

It's been horribly cold and wet here. If they got soaked in a rainstorm, it's a quick way to get the chill off your bones. I've definitely been tucking up under a blanket on the sofa. I've sometimes turned the heating on in holiday lets so we don't catch a chill in the past. As long as it's not every day I totally get this.

BustyLaRoux · 05/08/2023 00:54

OP asked if it’s really that cold. And yeah it has been a bit feckin cold. I feel the cold terribly. I can’t help it. I just do. My DP doesn’t feel the cold at all. He’s walking around the house opening windows and patio doors, wearing shorts and flip flops. I’m wearing a vest, tshirt and jumper and long trousers resolutely going round slamming the doors and windows shut. A. It’s not that warm despite it being August. B. Different people feel the temperature..well…differently!

In answer to your question OP, yes, for some of us it is cold. Maybe not bone chilling cold. But not comfortable. I actually haven’t put the heating on myself, but I have thought I’d like to a couple of times. You’ve asked whether it’s really that cold, and when some PPs have tried to explain that yes they are quite uncomfortable and cold, you’ve rubbished them. I guess you just wanted a load of people saying good lord, how dare your lodger do such a thing!!!!

In the middle winter we have competitive coldness, with people refusing to put the heating on despite it being -4 and snowing outside, but they feel 'quite warm' in their oodie.

In the summer we have people saying they are 'freezing' and putting the heating on because they can't sit around in shorts and a t shirt.

Why can't you believe that it's genuinely cold in some bits of the country? My heating keeps coming on - it's set to 16c!

It's 11c outside, raining heavily and even in winter PJs, slipper socks and my dressing gown I'm feeling chilly. The "real feel" aka taking wind and such into account is 7c!

Had the heating on for a couple of hours a few days ago. It was fucking it down, we'd been at a summer festival the council was putting on, then we'd had a play in a splash pad, in the rain obvs 🙄. Got home, got the kids changed and warm, didn't have time to sort myself out properly before eldest went off to a sports club for an hour. I sat watching, and got colder and colder in the air cond sports hall. Got home and was shivering uncontrollably so blasted the radiators for an hour or so til my body temp sorted itself out.
