I’m in Central Scotland, and we’ve had the fan on today. It’s so muggy, I’d melt if the heating was on. Outside temps were definitely higher than initially forecast.

Bideshi · 01/08/2023 20:33

My kitchen's 14 degrees too. I have Raynaud's. I just picked up the milk jug and my fingers have gone bloodless and white. It hurts. The west of Scotland is colder than the north of Scotland at the moment.

Princessbananahamock · 01/08/2023 20:42

central heating will only go on October if it’s fucking cold, November is the norm. Although I do have a dehumidifier to take dampness out of house and dry washing ( fucking godsend) but it also warms the house.

ManchesterLu · 01/08/2023 20:43

I have my heating set to 20 and it hasn't clicked on since mid April. That's higher than a lot of people have it, so no, there's no need for heating at this time of year.

You may feel chilly because it isn't as warm as we might be used to, and you're wearing summer clothes. Pop a jumper on if you're genuinely cold.

LakieLady · 01/08/2023 20:46

I thought about putting the heating on earlier, but I shut all the windows and and got a blanket out instead.

I'm in the SE, but it's windy and the wind is remarkably cold for August.

Wexone · 01/08/2023 20:47

Southern Ireland here. I actually lit my fire there about two weeks ago. one Friday. it was absolutely lashing down. had to walk dogs in rain and they came in all wet including me. Once dried them off they were shivering so felt sorry for them and lit the fire (currently have no oil) they really appreciated it. 🤣 Sat on top of it and it too tye chill out of the room. my mother in law was shocked but did agree it was cold for July. we will have to order oil now as it looks like August is going to be same as July. we normally can get till Sept before we need it here. this summer is abysmal

I'll tell that to my feet, which are like blocks of ice again!

Extractor fans are generally shit for ventilation. compared with opening the window. My bathroom window is open when I am having a shower whatever the temperature is outside. Even in a Scottish sub-zero January. I cannot bear steamy rooms and all that steam causes mould and damp. Window open when I go in the shower, remains open while I am getting dressed, closed again when I have finished dressing.

Asking for the heating on when the temperature is 22c is a bit much though.

MrsMitford3 · 01/08/2023 21:02

We are Home Counties. Windows open and fans on to sleep.

We barely even use the heating in the winter (except for underfloor heating in kitchen for pets 😂)

I loathe the feeling of forced heat and much prefer a cool house.

notacooldad · 01/08/2023 21:03

We very rarely have heating on but yesterday dud. I couldn't get warm all day.

TerfTalking · 01/08/2023 21:08

DH casually suggested putting the heating on last Saturday, it rained all day. I told him to get a fucking grip and put some clothes on or get under a blanket. The thermometer in the hall (coldest part of the house) said 20. It was 22 elsewhere. 😡

Mumwithbaggage · 01/08/2023 21:16

We're in Kent. Not putting the heating on but it's definitely damp and chilly especially considering it's the middle of summer.

It is not cold enough for heating, anywhere in the UK.

Even in north Scotland, the minimum temp at the moment is 11c at night and mid teens in the day. That is not cold enough for heating unless you are unwell.

I am a cold person and suffer in the winter, I have to wear fingerless gloves inside and three layers including thermals to feel anywhere near comfortable. But mid teen temps are not cold. You may not be able to wear vests and shorts, but it's hardly jumper weather either, maybe a cardigan. In 16-17c temps we have this week my house is still around 23c.

It is not cold enough for heating, anywhere in the UK

Why do you get to decide that?

It was 8C the other day in mid Scotland and I put my heating on for a bit.

Forecast this week has it dropping to 9C most nights this week.

I might put my heating on again.

twinmum2007 · 01/08/2023 21:21

Depends where you are. I'm in the south east and definitely not cold enough for the heating.

popgoesthecat2 · 01/08/2023 21:26

@DinnaeFashYersel whereabouts in Scotland? I've searched the BBC weather website for lots of different Scottish towns and cities and I can't see anything lower than 11c and that's overnight . Happy to be corrected though.

19lottie82 · 01/08/2023 21:35

I’m in Scotland and so have to admit, I almost put the heating on last night.

nopuppiesallowed · 01/08/2023 21:36

South West..... I'm in a light shirt, gilet and jeans in a 1930s house with suspended wooden floor boards and walls with narrow cavities which became damp with flipping cavity wall insulation (rogue firm which eventually took it out then went bust). So, in short, a cold house which is a nightmare to heat. I'm not cold, but I definitely wouldn't put the heating on in summer anyway. However, the electric blanket goes on so our bed is toasty warm when we slide beneath the duvet 🤣

milveycrohn · 01/08/2023 21:41

I think it depends on where you are.
I generally feel the cold a lot, but I've been in a T shirt all day.
With the energy crisis and cost of living crisis, I would not really want to put the heating on until I have to.
I have known an August day be absolutely freezing, but I am in the south east, and although not great with lots of rain, it was sunny today, and windy, but not cold.

I'm in Fife.

Saturday till Tuesday has a min of 9C forecast overnight

She constantly opens the bathroom window.... which is going to be an issue in winter.

She will be moving out anyway.

My bathroom window is open 24/7. It doesn't mean it will be in winter. In winter it's just open for a shower then closed before I leave for work.

fivelilducks · 01/08/2023 21:56

We had it on for 30 mins today 🫢 shoot me

Yellowdays · 01/08/2023 21:57

Tell her that her rent is based on heating off over the summer. You can have it on but would need to raise rent.

PickAChew · 01/08/2023 21:59

QuestionableMouse · 01/08/2023 19:55

Not that cold in the south east

Not everyone lives in the south East!

TBF, in Durham City, today, I've been wearing a light 3/4 sleeve tee and too warm in it. No socks in the house because too warm. I've had patio doors and a lot of windows open.

On my walk, this morning, everything smelled musty and the spores triggered the sniffles far worse than grass pollen does. And the rain, when it finally arrived, didn't cool anything down.

But my extremities have felt cold.despite the warmth, this afternoon. (not now. I've had a.voddy and coke and I'm lathered!)

Mamai90 · 01/08/2023 22:02

I had my heating on today for an hour today. I'm in NI but I'd been swimming with the DC and couldn't get heat into me!

temosmail · 01/08/2023 23:26

@AvengedQuince she constantly keeps the bathroom window open....
