If the thermostat is set at 15⁰C then your heating will not actually kick in as the room temperature is above that so you're getting worked up about nothing.

Also.my bathroom window is regularly open too

She manually turning on the heating.....

Happy to take the lodgers money but not happy for them to actually live in the house? Part of living in a place is having a comfortable temperature- YABU

UWOT1 · 01/08/2023 18:17

Random question but if you live in Scotland did you get more money / support with the cost of energy during the winter?

CrackersCheeseAndWinePlease · 01/08/2023 18:17

I'm in West Yorkshire and I haven't had my heating on since winter

temosmail · 01/08/2023 18:17

@PickAChew yeah but the issue is the upstairs bathroom window will always be letting out heat in the winter. The "open" radiator is the one in the bathroom and hallway (terrace house) so all the heat from those areas will be let out of the house.

Lodger goes to have a shower or use the bathroom and is cold - yet insists on keeping the window open.....

I haven't turned mine on, it comes on automatically because of the thermostat.
It's come on a few times in the last few weeks - well-insulated house in the HC.

Is 22 not warm enough?

How cold?

I put the heating on when I feel cold, even for a bit to warm up a tad then turn back down.

I'm free to do that as it's my home and my bill.

You need to tweak your contract with your lodger it seems to define when they can and can't turn on the heating or whether a request needs to be made first.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 01/08/2023 18:20

I have the windows open after shower even in winter. It cost me more to fix a damp house. You can see here some other PP also put their heating on because of damp.

That said. There is no need to change the thermostat to 15C just because it’s summer. You can leave it at a constant temperature all year round. For example, 18 or 20C. Then it will come on when it drops below 20C. You should have rules on the thermostat temperature given you are paying.

Emmamoo89 · 01/08/2023 18:21

Nope its warm and muggy

Hugasauras · 01/08/2023 18:22

I'm in the north of Scotland and think it's bonkers.

Nope

Lachimolala · 01/08/2023 18:22

I put mine on today for two hours. The house felt weirdly damp and sticky, it’s feeling better now.

Ladyoftheknight · 01/08/2023 18:30

We've had it on a few times in July, the house is big and gets cold!

Harlechchick · 01/08/2023 18:31

We live in North Wales, and we've been sitting in the conservatory with the door open from mid morning today, yet yesterday evening I filled a hot water bottle because felt really chilly! 🤣.
It's so variable day by day, even in the same area - so I can imagine some areas of the UK (not sure if that's where you are?) feel like they're deep into Autumn 🥶

UWOT1 · 01/08/2023 18:32

DinnaeFashYersel · 01/08/2023 18:22

Nope

Wow that's shocking.

Depends what country.
But U.K., no absolutely not.

It's been down to 10/11c in the North East! So yes, it is really that cold!

SaltyCrisps · 01/08/2023 17:57

I'm in the North West and I'm currently sitting with my feet on a hot water bottle, wrapped in a blanket. I'd put the heating on were it not for the cost.

I’m in the northwest (GM) and have a t shirt on. My house is 21 degrees and it’s 18 outside. It’s not cold here at all. Damp and mehh but not cold.

I don’t understand the need for heating in summer. Even on damp cooler days.

@temosmail speak to the lodger. Ask why. Make it clear what your thoughts are regarding heating etc.

Yes, it makes a huge difference depending on the type of housing involved. Some houses seem to leak heat at an alarming rate, others like my Dad's flat - well, he's lived there for 3 years and has never (seriously!!) had the heating on.
He's in his 80's & even though I've visited on many a bitter winter's day, it feels very pleasantly warm (benefiting from the surrounding flats who must have theirs on high I suppose). He isn't neglecting himself, despite how it sounds!

Bleeping heck! It’s nothing like that here (North Lancs border with Yorkshire).

I go by temperatures rather than time of year when deciding whether I need the heating or not. If it’s very cold/damp I generally light the fire instead, but hot water bottle works well too.

It’s summer not the middle of winter. I’m sure the lodger isn’t sat there in hoodies and hats etc.

Susuwatariandkodama · 01/08/2023 18:40

Yes it is, it’s been 10 degrees here some mornings and only reaching 14 during the day, it’s cold!

QuestionableMouse · 01/08/2023 18:40

Airdustmoon · 01/08/2023 18:08

The idea of putting the heating on in August is baffling to me. I am generally a person who feels the cold and the last few weeks I’ve found myself wearing jeans and long sleeved t shirts much more than I would normally expect for the time of year … on a couple of occasions I’ve even put a jumper on. Not once have I even come close to thinking it’s time to turn the heating on! I don’t think we’ve had it on since April.

It's the damp! I've had the heating on a couple of times because the house felt damp and awful!

TenderDandelions · 01/08/2023 18:42

My cat refused to sleep on the bed with me last night because the room was too cold with the window open (I'm perimenopausal at the moment, so had the best night's sleep in ages with it being cool).

I'm sure DH made mutterings about putting the heating on the other day, but even he decided that was a step too far.

Yes, it's cold (for July/August), but it's definitely not heating worthy IMO!

marshmallowfinder · 01/08/2023 18:43

User5653218 · 01/08/2023 17:28

I turned the heating on today because the house felt damp. The towels still felt damp at lunchtime after our morning showers. It was only on for a couple of hours but the house feels better

You really need a dehumidifier then!
