We have a dog. A rescue dog, French bulldog, we inherited from a vet almost be acccident. She is my spirit animal. 20min fast exercise and needs a 1he nap to recover.
I used to hate dogs in public (despite being a dog lover and raised with guide dogs for the blind fostering) because my child was terrified of them. When he was 3 he had a dream and woke up screaming ‘the dogs are eating me, the dogs are eating me’ and from that day forth we struggled to go anywhere due to the number of (lovely gambling friendly) dogs in every park, path, walk.
My son adored our little (old) Frenchie from the moment he met her and she was ‘his’ dog. He still does, and it has been amazing watching him face his anxiety around other dogs since.
However I have never forgotten my anger/ frustration at owners of other dogs allowing them to bound up to us with the patronising ‘don’t worry, they’re friendly’: it still makes my blood boil.
I would and have have all dogs on leash in all public areas. Always.
Go rural if you have a dog with good recall, and without excellent recall only let off leash in a secure dog walking area.
Dogs on leash in pub garden? Fine. Dogs on a small indoor cafe? Not cool.
