Dogs friendly film screenings

My local cinema had a dog friendly showing (I think of Barbie) today. I'd no idea this was a thing. Genuine question - do dogs enjoy being in the cinema with other dogs? Doesn't it just descend into chaos?

I'm not a dog owner as you can probably guess.

I would be interested to know too OP. I know it says they lower the volume but I would have thought the big screen would be over stimulating.

Oh God another place full of dog hair, dog smell and entitlement. If this is the way they’re going, that’ll be the end of cinema-going for me.

sewerrat · 30/07/2023 18:40

we take our two poms to the cinema every few weeks, they love it. they are better behaved than most children there too

Dacadactyl · 30/07/2023 18:40

Dear Lord! Never heard of this and if it's true, what a load of nonsense.

Soon we'll only be able to escape other people's dogs in our own homes!

FrangipaniBlue · 30/07/2023 18:40

Just why???

and I say that as a dog owner!

Think this is unnecessary. Dog hair everywhere, no thank you. Dogs can be left alone for tge length of a film.

sewerrat · 30/07/2023 18:43

your dogs must be filthy and severely undertrained

It would be lying to say that for, a terrible few moments, I thought we'd booked tickets for the same showing. Surely a nightmare if you're actually keen to see the film?

And must require a lot of cleaning - hair etc ...

then go to a non-dog-friendly showing?

TomatoSandwiches · 30/07/2023 18:45

I adore dogs, but this sounds ridiculous.

That’s not the point. The screen most likely won’t be kept as ‘dog-friendly’ for every showing/film. It could rotate between dogs allowed or not. I can’t imagine the cinemas (who are struggling as it is) are going to do enough in-depth cleaning after every showing.

lavenderlou · 30/07/2023 18:46

Good grief, can people not survive without their dogs for a couple of hours? Hope they vacuum all the seats after.

crumpet · 30/07/2023 18:47

Think cinemas are massively dog unfriendly. Dark, cramped, smelly (lots of food smells, loud, can’t think of a planet where a dog would think it’s rights up its street. Not fair.

exceptions for working dogs who are stars, but still not the best environment for them

snygghygge · 30/07/2023 18:50

I actually saw Barbie with my dog yesterday. It was all good fun. Plenty of dogs at the cinema it was really just a bit of fun. I viewed the experience as a welcome opportunity to train passive rest with my 16-month old terrier pup

LlynTegid · 30/07/2023 18:52

Never come across this at all. Suggests that either the cinema manager loves dogs, or a desperation to get people into the cinema.

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/07/2023 18:54

@sewerrat no thanks. I want to go to a cinema that is dog free (other than service dogs). I imagine a dog friendly showing would have several mutts leaving fur and slobber everywhere.

I will keep going to dog free cinemas. It is getting ridiculous though. They are animals, not humans. They don't need to go to the cinema. Or shopping

What do the dogs do? Do they sit by you or explore the cinema, play with the other dogs? And do some sit on the seats? I find that a bit grim if I'm honest, unless they get a good clean afterwards.

they're higher in the food chain than humans sadly so that's not your place to call.

Well, we came a bit in advance and everybody just mooched around for a while. We were given goodie bags including a blanket to place on the seat. I sat with my dog in my lap - she's a wriggly terrier, the whippet next to me just cuddled up on a blanket on the floor. I promise it wasn't grim at all! Only well-behaved dogs and their humans

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 30/07/2023 19:00

I'm a dog owner. This is a totally bloody stupid idea.

gogomoto · 30/07/2023 19:00

Never heard of this but my ddog does like some tv, but he prefers wildlife documentaries, his favourites are ones about lions or other big cats

VeridicalVagabond · 30/07/2023 19:01

I have three couch potato dogs who would probably love to go sit in a comfy chair in the dark for a few hours with me, but FFS they can do that at home. I can't think of a single reason I'd want to take my dogs to the cinema. They can watch Doggy TV at home while I go see Barbie. Why do dogs need to go everywhere???

If your dog can't be left home for a couple of hours while you to to the cinema you have failed to train your dog and shouldn't own one.
