God I am bored of dogs

And they are everywhere. Obviously barking and shitting which is annoying anyway. But also running and shitting around every tiny bit of green space in cities so that no one else can use these places apart from dog owners. Even when you go to a pub or café half the time these days it's "dog friendly" (why do we all have to be fucking "friendly" btw? "Tolerant" I could at least understand). You can't escape the fucking things. At work we even have dullards cacking on about how they want "office dogs" - nightmare as far as I'm concerned and really if you're going to be accommodating people's personal life at work surely a fucking crèche would be a higher pissing priority. Pet dogs don't even do anything. They literally just exist so that people can have pet dogs. Why the fuck are they suddenly everywhere?

Obviously not quite as selfish as those who choose to have kids, as that is contributing far more to climate change. But I'm sure you don't have kids as that would make you a hypocrite too.

Ah you see I don’t preach to others. There is the hypocrisy you see. I have heard pet-owners berate others who aren’t vegetarian etc. Let me know if you need a more detailed explanation.

PrimitivePerson · 30/07/2023 22:27

Exactly. I hate them being around me, because their behaviour is completely unpredictable and I get really tense when they're close. I hate it when people say "Oh, he won't hurt you, he's just being friendly!" - you don't know that, he's a fucking animal that will act on instinct, and if he fancies attacking me on a whim, he will.

You're scaring yourself. There are some dangerous dogs out there but most couldn't do much damage even if they wanted to. And they don't want to. You're not about to be mauled by a Yorkshire terrier.

Icecreammonster · 30/07/2023 22:32

I hear you too, I have a rescue dog, I’ll only ever have rescue dogs as I strongly disapprove of unethical breeding. I bought a cheap caravan as a holiday home especially because I needed a safe haven where we can chill with him. He’s dog reactive due to a long term injury, he’s brilliant with kids and all people. The location we are based in is now bloody overrun with dogs, and bluntly all the usual breeds who people ran out and bought because these are the breeds that previous non dog owners seem to want. Cue lots of complete ignorance about the general etiquette of dog ownership, ie that dogs need to be under control at all times!!! And the idea that dogs have free rein of shared green areas is nuts too. Sadly the whole attitude is a sign of our times (not dissimilar to the idea that someone has to move plan seats to accommodate unorganised families), complete and utter privilege. And honestly, if you’re breeding to make a fast buck then stop it, dogs are only supposed to be bred from if the breeding dogs don’t have traits which can be problematic. So annoying!

I feel the same about children, running around, screaming, throwing toys and shit everywhere.
75% of people will like my dog, a lot less will like random children.

Dogs won't pay your pension dear. You will rely on those screaming kids for that.

I just couldn't have said it better myself. They are ugly, they smell and are always up in my grill. Add to that gormless dog owners.

I love dogs we have two working/pet dogs. What I cannot fathom are folks that go shopping with them. Or take them for a coffee. Fine if you're out for the day walking in the mountains, beaches etc.

There are some shockingly bad owners these days who have either no clue or no time to train them.

I saw some absolute spunkhinge facetiming a dog last week, nearly roundhouse kicked the iPad mini out of her hands

I love the word spunkhinge 😂

Literally 😴 at another dog thread. Take it up with the businesses if you would prefer no dogs.

The vast majority of children grow into adults who contribute to society and the economy. The vast majority of dogs, with the exception of a small percentage of working and assistance dogs, are there purely for the entertainment of their owners.

Only a person who has never had a dog would write a comment like this. If you hate dogs, you would never understand the relationship between dog and owner. Do you know how many people are chronically lonely and only have their dog for company. Some people don't have friends or a social network but have a dog who is there for them without judgement. When you see how utterly despicable some humans are, it's no surprise, people would rather have the company of a dog. Dogs can detect cancer with their nose, strokes before they happen, a hyper or hypo episode before a person has it, a heart attack before it shows obvious symptoms, calm children with autism, provide emotional support for those with PTSD, detect drugs, detect bombs, protect property, protect livestock, lead the blind etc etc etc

Just because all dogs don't fulfil these roles, (they still have the capacity), it doesn't make them any less amazing. There are a lot of useless humans who do far less and do not contribute to society in a meaningful way... Just look at the crime figures. Some of the comments make me think about cultural differences in the human-dog relationship.

How do you know they don't want to? Dogs killing people isn't unheard of. Also, not all fears are logical. You might be scared of spiders, for example, which as far as I'm concerned is absolutely ridiculous, but I won't say that to your face.

SaturdayGiraffe · 30/07/2023 22:34

Visiting Dubrovnik we commented on how surprising it was to just walk around and not see dog mess or worry about kids being bitten/jumped on. Very few dogs.
Question for dog owners (or just dog lovers in general): Would you consider picking up dog mess that isn’t your own?

It's only on MN that I've encountered people who don't appear to like animals. I don't trust people who dislike animals. They are the real sociopaths.

This is exactly how I feel! I don’t understand it at all. Life is so soulless without them.

And it’s the main reason I never liked Theresa May 🤣

PrimitivePerson · 30/07/2023 22:28

As long as they stay well away from me, you can think what you like. But if a dog owner lets their dog near me, I WILL ask for them to get it away from me pronto, and I'll be rude about it if I have to.

Personally I don’t want my dog anywhere near people who either hate or are terrified of dogs. So win win.

I am not scared of dogs. But detest being licked by ‘friendly’ dogs. It’s not just about fear. I won’t let my kids touch you, so why is it ok for a dog to lick me or pick up my tennis ball and run off with it covering it in gross slobber? No fear involved.

Krakow is the same.

Slothinpurple · 30/07/2023 22:35

Is this not an issue more with the human owner?
We have a dog, she does not bother other people, she does not approach other people unless they are someone she knows and they specifically call her over. We constantly get people approach her and she ignores them.
If I am walking down the street and someone is clearly hesitant about dogs I move her completely out of the way.

Ours is a companion dog for my autistic dc and sometimes the only way we can get them out of the house so she does come places with us but not everywhere. She has never been to a garden centre but I would not let her pee on plants there even if I did.
We DO go to the pub with her occasionally but we sit in the dog specific area, no dogless people sit in that room unless that have chosen to.
She does regularly go on the bus (just what we have to do as I am a carer for two relatives and gone long periods) but she gets on and sits under my legs on the bus, she does not bother people.
In no situation does she sit on seats anywhere but home.
She is not a yapper or a barker

She has never bothered farm animals ever. In fact the dog field we hire has cows and sheep and all kinds. She has never hurt any wildlife ever.

I do not enjoy picking her shit up but I would rather pick it up than your kids step in it.

She will probably be the last dog we have to be honest even though she has been great it is just a lot.

It is the owners near us who have no control over their dogs that drive me mad. They let them run up and jump all over people and all over other dogs and that drives me crazy.

Livelovebehappy · 30/07/2023 22:35

Does it really matter that you don’t like dogs? I love dogs, but appreciate some don’t. I take my dog to a cafe. He sits there absolutely fine next to the table. On his lead. Not causing any problems, waiting patiently whilst we finish our coffee, then off we go. I know this has already been said on here, but when i go to a restaurant, a cafe, the cinema, fly on a plane, my heart sinks to my toes if I’m sat within a couple of feet of children. I just find the current generation of young children undisciplined, some are pretty feral, haven’t been taught how to behave in social situations, and cause me so much more anxiety than being sat next to a dog. But we’re all different, and all entitled to have our own opinions.

I have done before, because someone asked me to and it caught me off guard.
Generally, no, I wouldn't.
I find it as gross as the next person, but picking up my dogs poo is the price I have to pay to own him.

Lou670 · 30/07/2023 22:37

I had two dogs but now only have the one. I love dogs but can appreciate that not all do. I live on the coast and there is a cafe right on the sea front that is 'dog friendly'. What really winds me up is dog owners let their wet and sandy dogs in and not a lead. So the bloody thing is racing around soaking wet going from table to table! If I can avoid it I don't take my dog to cafes or garden centres. I may do if on holiday as she is now 17 and not very good at being left in a strange place. At home though I tend to leave her at home when she can just sleep whilst we are gone for an hour or two.
