But we didn’t have to go for Hard Brexit.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 28/07/2023 21:26

Why on earth would they think it wouldn't affect them?? And if so why did they vote for it at all??

Kendodd · 28/07/2023 21:29

Does anyone else remember the Brexit Arms?

I am very much of the view that there should be a Brexit tax, where the (~5% of GDP compounding annually) cost of this decision is shared out equally between all who voted for it.

Sign up on HMRC website. They said it was "worth it", so need to put their money where their mouth is. "Don't mind being poorer". Ok then, so you do that.

And if an insufficient number sign up (i.e. less than 50% of voters) - because in fact what they meant was that they wanted to make the rest of us poorer rather than pay it themselves - then we can safely ignore their opinions and rejoin the single market and customs union asap.

It's about time that people started to realise that rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. You broke it, you fix it. Pay up, or fuck off with your bullshit and let the adults start to repair the damage. Some apologies wouldn't go amiss, either.

I know this would never happen, but I would love it if it did.

TwelfthGiraffe · 28/07/2023 21:32

Why would you go to the press with a story where the main gist is “I’m really stupid”?

BotterMon · 28/07/2023 21:33

Hoist by his own petard

Because they're too stupid to realise how stupid they are.

Treesinmygarden · 28/07/2023 21:37

Slap it up him!! Was quite happy to fuck the rest of us up while thinking it didn't apply to him...!!

Swansandcustard · 28/07/2023 21:38

Brexit means Brexit. Sucks to be you, Greg Walter

HavfrueDenizKisi · 28/07/2023 21:39

'People were lied to'.

What a load of fucking crap. People were too ignorant to actually think for themselves beyond a knee jerk reaction (usually based in racism) and actually explore what leaving the EU meant and would look like. Instead they read headlines in awful rags that pretend to be journalism and people with hidden agendas on tv and radio.

Do you think this idiot from the article actually sat down and listed the pros and cons? Like fuck he did. His other half who voted to remain should dump his arse.

It's like Cornwall council asking whether their EU funding would continue after the county voted to leave. Idiots.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 28/07/2023 19:05

Turkeys voting for Xmas.

Wow - how staggeringly original.

Rummikub · 28/07/2023 21:42

I remember that about Cornwall asking the govt to replace the funds lost.

Blossomtoes · 28/07/2023 21:43

My sympathy extends as far as saying “Tough shit”. As a pp said, hoist on his own petard.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/07/2023 21:44

I remember not long after the referendum, being at a social thing with a couple who actually had a business entirely reliant on us being in the EU. They started saying how they had of course voted for brexit, even though they knew it wouldn't be a good thing for them personally, because they felt it was their duty to vote for it because it was the right thing for the country as a whole.

They were completely staggered by the entire rest of the group asking what the fuck they were talking about, and why on earth they would possibly think that. I think they were expecting sage nods of agreement or something Confused

Last I heard they had to downsize their house dramatically, sell their fancy cars, and lost their very nice lifestyle.

Idiots.

This is a good idea, and exactly how democracy works - can we extend it to anyone who has ever voted Tory please? I mean it's the democratic thing to do isn't it?

topnoddy · 28/07/2023 21:50

Bet he's not smiling like that now !

Totally. It’s called accountability, isn’t it?

Brilliant idea that those who voted Leave should be forced to financially compensate they rest of us with a Brexit tax. Infact a Brexit tax deserves it's own thread.

GaspingGekko · 28/07/2023 21:57

I was already living in Europe during the referendum, it was obvious to all the British expats I knew that Brexit could lead to huge difficulties in terms of visas and rights to live and work. I, and every expat I know, voted against Brexit.
As a family we paid thousands to obtain citizenship (cost of language tests, copies of documents, translation fees, attestation fees), so many others did that our local government office created a new team just to handle British citizenship requests.

So screw you Greg, and everyone else who created this situation. Because despite people claiming it was the Brexit campaign lies, I don't believe that anyone could genuinely believe that this wasn't a very probable outcome of leaving the EU.

ironically there is another thread on mumsnet today asking the question "what is your favourite cake"... While this thread seems to ask the question "why can't people have their cake and eat it"

changeyerheadworzel · 28/07/2023 22:14

Honestly anyone who voted for Brexit should be shot with balls of their own shite.
