Hot and bored on holiday

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 13:09

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

Admittedly I would be bored stiff in your position and as a fellow peri sufferer the heat would make me grumpy and angry but having saying that I would currently swap with you in a heartbeat, I’m looking after my mum who sadly has dementia which is as much fun as having my eyeballs washed out with bleach.

@BillieShears great addition to the chat, you can just scroll past you know. 😘

Nah. It summed up my feelings perfectly.

zoomiesdrivememad · 24/07/2023 13:58

I wonder who will play you in the movie?

So dramatic.

It's fine to not be enjoying it, but I don't think your going to get any of the answers your looking for here.

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 24/07/2023 13:59

I’m like you op. I don’t really like the heat as it’s hard to do anything. How hot is it there op?

RobertsRadio · 24/07/2023 14:00

Come home Op. Leave your DH to look after and cook for the kids.

Then sell the holiday home in the boring sports complex. Use the money for lots of interesting city breaks out of season and school hols in lovely cool Devon, Cornwall, Wales, Lake District, Ireland or Scotland etc.

Job done and you'll never have to sit in soaring temperatures with throbbing feet and sweating gallons again.

BostonSwanBoat · 24/07/2023 14:01

Teach yourself Spanish? If you can speak Spanish, try to read a book in Spanish.

DennyDoll · 24/07/2023 14:02

Ive kept quiet with this to him but a bit concerned about my 13 year old son. He’s an only child and still likes to collect tons of soft toys and cuddles his little cuddly dog. He also only likes to wear football kits all the time. My dh seems to think it’s ok for him to not grow up too fast but I'm concerned to be honest and when I mention it to him he doesn’t seem to care . He’s a massive football fan too but other kids his age seem to wear joggers and t shirts etc. he’s also developed a bad tick so am worried something is going on with him. How old is too old for soft toys and full kits ? What do you think ?

GrumpyPanda · 24/07/2023 14:02

Ridiculous comments and I totally get your feeling OP. Holidaying in Spain in July/August sounds like the seventh circle of hell even in a normal year. Can you swap for a holiday house in Iceland or even Denmark instead? Or else postpone the Spanish vacation to a more reasonable season. September/October?

I'm sorry, that sounds hard.

@DennyDoll Think you've posted on the wrong thread.

ElFupacabra · 24/07/2023 14:05

I mean, you went out there knowing the temperature. You went out there knowing you’re going to have hot flashes. What did you think would happen? I’m guessing your DH fucks off all day, everyday leaving you with the kids so you’re bored shitless. That’s the problem tbh.

tattygrl · 24/07/2023 14:06

Sweetashunni · 24/07/2023 13:15

Yeah. It’s in a heat wave because climate change. Caused by people consuming more than they need. Flying abroad, owning multiple houses, I mean you’re only one person but aren’t we all?

Sorry but I completely agree with this.

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 14:06

Whoever suggested a laps of the pool challenge - that’s a good suggestion . Might do it to motivate myself . Need also to get out my trainers or Pilates stuff from the bedroom as DH sleeps til 10am and I’m creeping around in the morning. I’ve been getting up at 6:30 am to enjoy the cool of the day.

The gym here is really expensive so that’s a no.

I’ve spent lots of time in the pool with the kids. I take them every Saturday and play with them in the pool at home .

So I’ve told DH that I’m fecking bored of spending all my time sitting around while he plays golf and cycles. He doesn’t like the beach . We need to rethink holiday plans while heat intolerance is such an issue for me.

To make you all laugh - it’s even too hot for DH to cycle!!! Our extreme sports mate almost collapsed with heat exhaustion yesterday after a bike ride.

Well about to take the kids to the pool again. It’s like a bath in the water At least they are having a ball.

I don't think YABU, OP. There's only so much you can do in that kind of 40+ degree heat, even with a swimming pool.
Personally I do beach holidays for the children's sake (they love it) but if I were on my own you wouldn't see me there. I'd much rather be up in the mountains, hiking and long walks, njoying the gorgeous forest, waterfalls etc. Or some other place that at least offers things to see/do away from the heat.

Dulra · 24/07/2023 14:07

Drink more of that cold Rose on the patio. Maybe mix it up a bit have an Aperol spritz every second drink

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/07/2023 14:07

How tragic My heart bleeds for you

lavenderlou · 24/07/2023 14:08

I get your point to an extent. We were in holiday in France last year where it was unbearably hot (unusually so). We like to get out and about to do stuff on holiday and it was too hot.

However, I know I find golf and lying around the pool boring so I wouldn't have bought a holiday home in a place where those are the options.

PollyThePixie · 24/07/2023 14:08

OP, I read but 3 books in 5 days would mean I was just skimming over the words because the book didn’t really interest me.

Are there any class you can go to in the complex, yoga, spin. You’d be keeping busy and doing yourself some good also.

And don’t bother about the sarcastic comments - some things are best left ignored.

Mammajay · 24/07/2023 14:08

It's like autumn here today and I love it. The heat is so draining. I'd come home early and enjoy our maritime climate.

Windchimeswinter · 24/07/2023 14:09

I'm playing my violin

Pebblesontheside · 24/07/2023 14:09

Obviously you are massively BU for everything in your post, but also - you are never too old for a nightclub!
Why not go and have a dance a bit more often and it might sort out some of your other problems

But it’s always going to be hot in Spain in the middle of July so why choose to go abroad? And if you really must then why not wait until October/ February half term when it will be cooler, especially at night.

UtterlyBeastly · 24/07/2023 14:11

You need a better book 😉

You can read ‘Spare’ that’s about a privileged person complaining, you might relate 😁
