Hot and bored on holiday

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

We are in our holiday home right now and it’s 35-40 every day. We have a routine that keeps us from overheating . Maybe you just need to switch up how you spend the day?

7am wake up and straight to the beach for breakfast and iced coffees. The weather is pleasant until around 11, so we head back at 10:30 to get inside for 11 before the blazing sun.

11-16 Make and eat lunch, nap, then pool

16:00 Dinner in a restaurant and walk around the town

Got to work with the weather, not against it. Means getting up and on the move early but it’s worth it. Also less other tourists about at that time, which we appreciate.

If you do actually like cycling, get up early, go for a long bike ride, have an early main meal then have the afternoon for pool/reading in the air conned room etc.

Then have the evening with a light meal and watch a film with a bottle of chilled wine.

Surely you just change up your routine to suit the weather?

Yep, looks like some people aren't allowed to have nice things. So much bitterness

Of course they are allowed to have nice things. They’re just not supposed to bitch and moan about the nice things when they’ve got them.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/07/2023 13:46

Also an older woman. Id rather be at home with all my stuff.

Lapland123 · 24/07/2023 13:46

Obviously forgot the afternoon siesta. When in Rome...

OP is in her own home surrounded by her own stuff.

It's too hot Grin

Develop an interest in sport. You'll lose your excess weight, and be less bored.

Sigmama · 24/07/2023 13:49

A spot of yoga?

alpenguin · 24/07/2023 13:50

Ah first world problems. At least you’re not being evacuated to sleep in a gym hall!

I get perimenopause chills not sweats. I could really use some heat but I’m stuck at home with no pool, moaning kids, equally shite tv, British weather and a partner who has mild covid but can’t return to work until
negative. Happy to swap. Don’t even want the wine, you can keep that

Have you read her update? She enjoys sport. Just not in the scorching heat.

Keykaty · 24/07/2023 13:50

Unless you are confined to school hols, go there in Winter/shoulder seasons. Let it out for the Summer to those who must go then.

I would only go to Med regions between late September to December and January to May. Southern Spain around Estepona/Cadiz has had great weather any time I visited. But once in July was my only visit there. Never again. Blistering. So I understand OP being overwhelmed with the heat.

Go at a different time.

Vanillalime · 24/07/2023 13:51

I think a jigsaw is a good idea OP. That should keep you busy for hours.

Or throw some money at the problem and go for a nice massage or something?

Indoor shopping centre is a good shout. You can wander around the shops & stop for some food.

NewLeafAgain · 24/07/2023 13:51

I think it's probably exacerbated because you feel you should be so grateful, and how the other posters have reacted probably reinforced that a lot. You are perfectly within your rights to complain just as others do about private school fees or trouble with the hired help that others wont have.

What sort of things do you normally like to do? If you have access to a car can you all get up really early and go on a adventure before it gets hot? Do you know any other women at the complex you could meet up with? Any friends who would jump at chance to fly out to be with you for a few days, dh can take the kids?

No reason at all that you couldn't go sightseeing! An airconditioned car is one of the best places to avoid the heat. Or as someone else has said, go to a shopping centre for a mosey - it would be cool there. If you are anywhere near Marbella, la Canada is good. I'm post-menopausal for the record.

We were in Spain the week before last and it was mid to high 30s. We still went out and about to see the place.

I would be happy with the kids in the pool and not dreading the school holiday at home.

Enjoy yourself. I hate the heat too but at least you have your own home to relax in and not stuck fighting for the buffet or sunbed. :-) It could be worse.

Drenchend · 24/07/2023 13:54

It's why we dint go to blazing hot places in summer.

PupInAPram · 24/07/2023 13:55

Are you near anywhere you could get some knitting needles and wool? Watch some you tubes about learning to knit, download a simple knitting pattern, make yourself something cozy ready for a return to chilly uk. Very therapeutic and calming and time flies.
