Hot and bored on holiday

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 13:09

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

Where in Spain are you? Is there no nearby shopping complexes or anything you could go for a wander round?

Why are you not in the pool?

To all of the snide posters, the OP is allowed to be more well off than you. She’s allowed to complain about things that don’t make her happy despite being wealthier than you.

The amount of envy on this thread is palpable.

Is there a shopping centre nearby that you can go visit?

Of course she’s ‘allowed’ to, nobody has reported the thread as far as I’m aware? We are also allowed to respond. And the responses are entirely predictable

One of many on this thread.

Yep, looks like some people aren't allowed to have nice things. So much bitterness

Yes trains and buses have aircon there. Is there anywhere you can get to on public transport worth seeing? Or a fiesta nearby? Google the town name and look for local news.

I'd be pretty bored too being somewhere too hot to do much while my DH played golf all day. It doesn't sound so very fulfilling.

Hufflepods · 24/07/2023 13:36

Out there suggestion, maybe you could actually engage with your family?

Where does it say she isn't?

ElectricTouch · 24/07/2023 13:37

I would hate to be in a sports resort full of golfers and cyclists so fair enough there. But we live in a world with unparalleled entertainment options. Between swimming, reading, sure jigsaws too, scrolling the internet, listening to podcasts, watching tv or movies there's plenty of options. There are so many board games nowadays and some are really fun; my kids and I have been screaming with laughter playing the family-friendly version of Cards Against Humanity (never the adult version, for god's sake, never the adult version!!) on our rainy holidays camping in Wales. If you have a pool and aircon, you can't be too hot.

Mayhem3 · 24/07/2023 13:38

Can you not go out really early morning and evenings?

I’d love a holiday in Spain but my idea of a holiday would consist of actually doing stuff and not just sitting around all day so I can see why you are bored.

I’m wondering why you went on this holiday at all tbh.
I would have waved DH and the kids off and stayed home where I don’t mind doing nothing.

As a PP if my DC is happy then I am happy so just try and focus on how much they’re enjoying the holiday.

Hollyhead · 24/07/2023 13:38

If you have pool access it would be a great opportunity to start a fitness programme - 10 lengths on the hour every hour. By the end of the holiday you’ll see an improvement.

Floppyelf · 24/07/2023 13:39

You might want to sell the holiday house before the market crashee. I’m afraid 39C+ will be the normal temperature for mediterranean countries. This is confirmed in most climate models. Its only going to get worse. Desert like dry conditions and flash floods are definitely on the cards for most of spain.

GoldDuster · 24/07/2023 13:40

Even on a regular year Spain in July is going to be be in the thirties, you have a house there, you must know this?

“I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading.”

OP’s children are in the pool while she lies bored on a sunbed reading. How do you engage with someone when you aren’t in the same place and are doing a different activity?

MadamWhiteleigh · 24/07/2023 13:41

Sounds like the location of the holiday home is a problem. On a sports complex?

Canttouchthis88 · 24/07/2023 13:42

LOL. When you think you've read it all on MN Grin

SirenSays · 24/07/2023 13:43

Get in the pool and play with your kids. It'll be more fun than drinking alone.

I'm guessing if she's lying on a sun bed reading then she's around the pool, quite a few people do this when their kids are in the pool...I know I do. I engage with them when they come out of the pool.

But you're just looking to stick the boot in like a lot of other posters on this thread

safetyfreak · 24/07/2023 13:43

Wow I'm so sorry for what you're going through Hmm

Maybe you need to get off the patio and go and see actual Spain. I'd be bored too just sat by a pool. I prefer to see the actual country.
Maybe that holiday home is wasted on you lot.

Same!!! Anyone would get bored sitting beside a pool.

Spain is amazing - go see it!

What region are you in?

WonderingWanda · 24/07/2023 13:44

I've just been for a very wet and bracing walk on Dartmoor, I'm frozen to my core and my hands have gone numb, I'm finding it hard to be sympathetic.
