Hot and bored on holiday

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 13:09

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

I think a lot of posters here are not hearing what you are really saying OP ! You need more stimulation. You obviously feel there is more to life than just lying around reading … I think you should hire a car/get a taxi and go and see some LIFE! Maybe you need to achieve something .. like helping at local dogs home/children’s centre/teach English etc. hope you find something with meaning.

pollymere · 25/07/2023 22:54

It sounds like it's not your sort of holiday. You probably need to be somewhere cooler with things to do. You are clearly feeling guilty for seeming ungrateful when actually you sound miserable.

We decided not to have a holiday this year after realising it would be expensive and very rainy.

Ukrainebaby23 · 25/07/2023 22:59

Time to read a book would be nice ....all the rest of the stuff an unbelievable bonus

Meadowland · 25/07/2023 23:11

YANBU. I don't think some people are understanding just how hot it is out there. There's nice hot, and there's unbearable hot.
I too would hate it OP, not being able to do anything.
Give me the cooler northern climate any day.

If you read full thread I think she was lacking any adult company.
In same way lonely pensioners ask the time etc.

🙈

myfaceismyown · 26/07/2023 00:04

Lots of people making fun of OP. I am also overweight so set goals when I swim to try to improve my stroke, and swim more laps, setting my own targets. I compete with myself so it is fun. I also sketch and take a small watercolour set, which absorbs hours of my time. As for DCs, finding fun games for them is always rewarding. Simple things like scavenger hunts for 10 things beginning with C in the native language. You have to join in though. Actually talking to my DCs and finding out what they see of their future, what they like about their life now....conversations you would not have time for at home. When it is hot taking a power nap at midday benefits everyone and eating later does not matter when there isn't a time restraint in the morning. Afterwards a cool moonlit stroll talking about your hopes and dreams can be fun. Try to enjoy this time OP.

wellstopdoingitthen · 26/07/2023 00:20

My heart bleeds for you op.

Gingernan · 26/07/2023 06:02

Leave the kids with hubby get on a local bus and see a bit of the place.Take some pictures. Sunbathing is bad for you and boring.

TedsmumLulu · 26/07/2023 09:40

Sitting here in my winter pyjamas in sunny Scotland 😂 but to be honest I wouldn’t like to be on holiday in southern Europe in the middle of summer .
I really enjoy temps 18c to 23c but can cope of its up to 30c especially if there is AC , shade and a pool .
In your shoes I’d be off to an air conditioned mall to get ice coffees and mooch around the cool shops , find an air conditioned beauty salon to get nails done 💅🏻 see a movie , sleep in the day walk and go out late at night ?

She should arrange to volunteer at a local children's centre or teach English whilst she is on holiday ??? Seriously? Are you assuming that Spain has no rules and processes around DBS, references then? And that these are things she can do during what is also the Spanish summer break ?

Skodacool · 26/07/2023 16:02

Do some swimming then you might lose a bit of weight. Really, OP, complaining about the situation you are in is a bit much!

I know! 😂 This place is unhinged sometimes....

Antoninus · 26/07/2023 16:08

Sell the house then

I think most of respondents have missed fact Op is in sole charge of children (young enough to need constant supervision in pool) while husband is off out cycling and golfing for hours.
What she’s supposed to do with the children while she’s volunteering.
I also can’t imagine the logistics of finding a volunteer role on your 2 week holiday.

adriftabroad · 26/07/2023 17:48

Go OP, go and teach English! 😂

Think you need to either go away earlier or later in the year when the temps are cooler or reconsider where you have a holiday home.

Going forwards climate change is only going to make temps rise more & in already hot places that rise will be felt more significantly & quickly than at home.
Even the weather here has been quite unbearable at times this year & last but that is more due to how close it is here when it gets a over 25° & that is due to our country’s general moisture levels.

Yes - have been to Cartagena. Nice place

I haven’t made it to Cartegena but stayed in Cabo Roig a few times & loved it. Such a relaxed area, marina round the coast to the south is lovely & the beaches are practically empty in summer as locals are at work & many tourists stay in the bigger towns like Torrevieja.

Hot and bored on holiday
olympicsrock · 27/07/2023 13:53

Update: I’ve adjusted to the heat ( it’s been less humid too) and had a much better time over the last few days. Actually enjoying chilling now. I often find it hard to switch off and relax on holiday as I am such a workaholic.

Gave myself a bit of a kick up the backside and had a serious chat with DH about him not buggering off for the whole holiday to do sport leaving me in charge of the kids . Also not doing holidays at the hottest time of the year

Planned evenings with friends and food after 9 pm so less sticky and it has been nice to have adult conversation/ company.

Also made a firm decision to lose weight and prioritize myself more at home instead of work and looking after the kids.

Thanks to those who understood the bigger picture and cheered me up , gave me good suggestions.

Good work OP! So glad things have turned around 👍

Dixiechickonhols · 27/07/2023 14:10

Glad things improved Op enjoy the rest of your hols.

mainbrochus · 27/07/2023 14:19

well done OP.

REMEMBER: PUT YOURSELF FIRST, no one else will. And the whole family will benefit if you are happier and fitter.

Am also glad to hear you had a serious chat with DH.
Mine didn't do serious chats, not about holidays, not about finances, not about housework. Eventually I divorced him.

It took MN to see what was happening to me. That's why people have been gently probing for info to see if you had an abusive relationship but hadn't yet realised it.

all the best OP BrewBrew

PollyThePixie · 27/07/2023 16:38

Well done OP. 👍
