Hot and bored on holiday

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 13:09

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

Fancy an exchange visit?

I'll swap two weeks in my house in the beautiful south downs national park, lovely view from the window, fantastic country walks on the doorstep, just a few miles from the buzz of Brighton but with lovely villages and country pubs close by, for two weeks in your holiday home in the horrible heat and sun of Spain. I realise this is a big sacrifice on my part, but I'm generous like that.

You'll need to bring a few jumpers, a set of waterproofs and some wellies.

Dixiechickonhols · 24/07/2023 14:16

It’s not really a family holiday if he’s in bed then off on his own cycling or golf.
If it’s not working for you book something different next year.

DoubleTime · 24/07/2023 14:18

Sign yourself up for an online course - do Open Uni. Or learn some Spanish and then go practise it when it gets cooler in the evening. And why don't you join your kids in the pool ?

CandyLeBonBon · 24/07/2023 14:19

Sending thoughts and prayers op 🙏 Flowers

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 14:19

That’s the thing . I’d don’t have any of my stuff here.

@PupInAPram good thought. Maybe I need to buy some crafty stuff .

@BillieShears you too dear! .

@Positive41 that’s what I need to hear . At least there are sunbeds and a patio . I know I’m lucky.

Well I’ve turned on the music to lift my mood a bit. The wine has numbed my soul a little . Arranged to see a friend for dinner .

Really the challenge is that DH and I want different things out of a holiday.

I hear you OP. I think this sounds very much something your DH wanted to do. I wouldn't be pussyfooting around in the morning so he can sleep his lazy arse in to 10am. If he was up a bit earlier, he could suffer with you! Or maybe he wouldn't be quite so lively at night, re restaurants etc. When do you get to pick what you do?

letthemalldoone · 24/07/2023 14:22

PollyThePixie · 24/07/2023 14:08

OP, I read but 3 books in 5 days would mean I was just skimming over the words because the book didn’t really interest me.

Are there any class you can go to in the complex, yoga, spin. You’d be keeping busy and doing yourself some good also.

And don’t bother about the sarcastic comments - some things are best left ignored.

I can easily read a book in a day if I'm sitting out in my back garden, and that would be over the course of the afternoon/evening?

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 14:22

Sounds perfect - a bit like our normal home. I’m up for a staycation next year!

Caspianberg · 24/07/2023 14:22

Meanwhile I’m in scorching south europe, but live here.
So I have had a toddler off on nursery holiday (11 weeks summer holidays), and still have loads of work to do despite the heat. It would be pretty luxury to sit in shade and read

ManateeFair · 24/07/2023 14:22

So, basically what you're saying is that you are on holiday, in a property that you own, and you are incapable of amusing yourself there even though it's your own house and you could fill it with anything you want in order to keep you entertained? Don't want to watch sport or Jeremy Clarkson? Then watch something else FFS.

What an absolute nightmare, owning a second home and having a holiday in it. Really tough week you're having there, OP.

cocksstrideintheevening · 24/07/2023 14:22

OP why did you buy your holiday home there? Did you used to like cycling or golf?

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 14:23

@LakieLady that reply was to you !

I am a similar age and I can't drink anymore. Not rose, not anything. It sends me into an existential crisis. I would find better books, cool off in the pool and do some yoga/meditation videos on my phone.

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 14:24

I speed read ! Always have done. Three great books. Got bored halfway through a fourth..

ManateeFair · 24/07/2023 14:24

OP, I read but 3 books in 5 days would mean I was just skimming over the words because the book didn’t really interest me.

That means you read more slowly than the OP does. It doesn't mean the OP is skimming. I can easily get through seven or eight books in a week if I've got not much else to do, and I don't skim.

Iwishmymumwouldbemymum · 24/07/2023 14:25

I sympathise OP. I remember going on a much looked forward to holiday after a horrendous battle with cancer.

We were returning to a fitness resort we had loved before.

I found it was quite different now I was in menopause, five stone heavier from the treatment, incapable of walking far due to my legs chaffing and generally being exhausted nevermind actually working out. The heat was insufferable.

I was utterly miserable.

A few days before the end I discovered the canoes on the resort beach. Hallelujah. I spent the remaining time drifting along the water in the breeze.

Could you hire a boat or something?

Otherwise go into the house, whack up the aircon and go for a netflix marathon. It's your holiday, you don't have to do the sun lounger.

And sorry but the wine isn't going to help (sorry I know you don't want to hear this but it really is true.)

Mayhem3 · 24/07/2023 14:25

It sounds like DH is getting a way better deal out of this than you are.

ManateeFair · 24/07/2023 14:26

BillieShears · 24/07/2023 13:58

Nah. It summed up my feelings perfectly.

And mine, to be fair

PandaPacer · 24/07/2023 14:26

Yes, this was me last year.

This year, we're going to the Arctic.

Desperatenow1 · 24/07/2023 14:27

LMNT · 24/07/2023 13:30

To all of the snide posters, the OP is allowed to be more well off than you. She’s allowed to complain about things that don’t make her happy despite being wealthier than you.

The amount of envy on this thread is palpable.

Is there a shopping centre nearby that you can go visit?

Agree with this

There are some hideously bitchy women on this thread...

OP sounds like my idea of hell! I can cope with up to about 24 degrees then I am miserable. I hate sitting around "sunbathing" get bored very easily and want something to do....I can only sympathise as I would be itching to get home if I were you!

Dixiechickonhols · 24/07/2023 14:28

Can you house swap it next year?
Or suggest him and kids go there and you go elsewhere for a change on basis they like it you don’t.
If answer is you need to go as childcare while he enjoys his hols then that makes your point it’s not a holiday for you.

LakieLady · 24/07/2023 14:29

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 14:23

@LakieLady that reply was to you !

I consider that a done deal then! I'll book the last week in July and the first week in August off, and book my flight nearer the time.

RampantIvy · 24/07/2023 14:30

I’d love to be in the UK on a grey day, going for a walk or able to cycle or play tennis or garden. Horses for courses….

Sadly, it has been far too wet to be able to do any of those things where I live. I saw animals lining up two by two yesterday it was so wet. I don't mean gentle rain, but torrential rain ALL day.

This is why you have had some snippy replies. Everyone is suffering from cabin fever.

If Spain in summer is too hot for you could you not just stay at home, and the children just go with their dad?

Southlondoner88 · 24/07/2023 14:30

Get up earlier and go out before it gets too hot?

stay indoors and nap during the hot hours and go back out at night for nice meal?

listen to a podcast? Radio? Music ?

do you like any sport? Hiking, swimming, tennis? You can do these early or late when it’s cooler?

Any museums or sight seeing near by or in next town/ city? You could go on a day trip, make use of their air conditioning. Buy a personal fan that you can carry with you?

Could you all go on a drive? To the mountains maybe? A picnic in the shade somewhere? Usually the higher up you go, the cooler?

boat trip, usually shaded and cold sea breeze might help?

I speed read ! Always have done. Three great books. Got bored halfway through a fourth..

I’m a bit of a speed reader myself but 3 books in 5 days in amongst daily tasks would mean the books hadn’t really got my attention.

or perhaps the amount of pages matters.
