I don't know what these people think they are achieving. I think the mum was in a cab which looks like an electric car anyway, they refuse to let her get past.

you've been conditioned to only travel by car - that the problem

Bullshit. I don't drive, never have. I have never flown. I travel by bus/train/taxi about 5 times a year (if that). I walk miles every single day. Yet if some cunt tried to stop me getting my child to a hospital in a taxi they'd end up needing to share the taxi to hospital with me I can promise you that!

I can understand both sides but I always think it is a shame that there was an (unrelated) red flag on the first lap of the British Grand Prix last year.

In the absence of that red flag, the outcome of what would have happened on the Wellington straight at Silverstone on live TV in front of a global audience of millions would have put the topic to the top of the agenda for the media for several weeks and it would have led to a solution to the protests being found, instead of these annoying smoldering protests we continue to have at the moment

Are you saying that it was a shame that the red flag stopped multiple fatalities after a three car collision? I'm really hoping I've not understood your post.

did these screaming parents care when this child died Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah?
did these parents care when 36000 others died prematurely?

suddenly they care now though...

This is ludicrous thinking. Her mother has far more dignity, class and intelligence. Her mother has forced action with her intellectual power. Please don't compare her to this. Its insulting to Rosamund to throw her daughters name around like this.

HirplesWithHaggis · 22/07/2023 14:40

Can you give more information on this?

At the 2022 British GP approximately six JSO protesters invaded the track at the moment the race started and sat in a line on the Wellington straight.

On the first lap it is the best opportunity for drivers to gain a position and it is always chaotic with drivers weaving from side to side, often with their vision obstructed by the car(s) in front.

I obviously don't need to provide any more details on what would have happened.

There was a huge crash immediately at the start which meant that the red flag (race stoppage) was thrown before the drivers got to the Wellington straight.

Oh bore off dear!

My "local" hospital is ten miles down a duel carriageway in a different town. It's 90mins by bus (plus a decent walk to the bus stop), or about 20 by car. How would you get there with a sick child?

ExtraOnions · 22/07/2023 14:49

I think some of the protesters are bellends

I think some of the “regular” drivers we see in confrontations with them, are staging it for online fame

I think had it been an accident that had closed the road, people would find another route (unless they were going to do shout at a corpse)

I think the right-wing media can’t decide if road blocking protests are good or bad (block the road to stop an asylum centre is good; block the road to protest oil bad)

I think 99% of the country are not effected by these protest, why they think we are interested in the transport difficulties in London, I’ll never know.

Wintercomesoon · 22/07/2023 14:51

The irony is lost on these privileged fools. They may land up being responsible for people caring less about climate change because of their childish tactics.

the insults coming in are poor really, but to be expected when its pointed out to people that a car might not be for every trip and there are alternative means of transport - that really aren't dangerous and much more effective

ATerrorofLeftovers · 22/07/2023 14:52

ivykaty44 · 22/07/2023 14:45

do some research and find out what is the quickest way of getting around in London. if you can get your blinkers off

Oh and the child who died of a fatal asthma attack that the coroner ruled as attributable to pollution is Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah. Her mother is Rosanund. A brave lady doing amazing work to fight for cleaner air. I’d be surprised if she would condone another child being prevented from accessing urgent medical care. Her whole raisin d’etre is to protect children.

it would not have hurt the protest one jot to allow this taxi through and then resume the road blocking. The fact they didn’t shows them up to be self-righteous arseholes, so drunk on their own sense of virtue they’ve lost sight of their own humanity.

If they were really concerned about people, they would not have done this.

The crying shame is this behaviour just entrenches opinion against them and their cause. As someone who’s passionate about climate change and reducing air pollution I see this as a disaster. Because, you know, I want actual real change that will make a real difference.

Sugarfish · 22/07/2023 14:53

@ivykaty44 most people, and especially Londoners are aware of alternative public transport. But if I needed to get a sick person to hospital I would use a car. I would not risk a busy tube or shove them in a basket on a bike. You sound quite brainwashed.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/07/2023 14:54

I mean I agree with their ends, and also with disrupting sporting events and the like. But I don’t agree with blocking roads for this reason - it’s really dangerous.

Wintercomesoon · 22/07/2023 14:55

ivykaty44 · 22/07/2023 14:39

So presumably your car journeys are essential , but other people’s are not. You’re embarrassing yourself.

ivykaty44 · 22/07/2023 14:55

If you think a basket on a bike is a safe place for a baby - you should probably re think safety

Completely agree with this ATerror.
As a mother it's making me anxious just watching part of the video. There's no way any of the protestors or the flying monkeys on this thread are mothers.

Iolani · 22/07/2023 14:56

Summerhillsquare · 22/07/2023 14:04

But they are not. They are doing it to attract attention to the cause (much as the suffragettes for example did), which as you can see from this thread and others, is effective.

Except they seem incapable of dealing with an immediate emergency of a newborn baby needing to get to hospital .
They ignore an emergency and block access.
They are a disgrace.

Sugarfish · 22/07/2023 14:57

I think if anyone dies due to being prevented urgent medical care, then these protesters should be charged with manslaughter.

Please point out where i said "use a car for every trip" - I don't think I did. My mum would be dead if I'd tried to get her to hospital via public transport (not to mention there's none past 11pm where I live - that includes taxis too)

In an emergency? I am. Abso-fucking-loutly using the fastest form of transport available to me and you're being disingenuous if you think you wouldn't do the same too.

Yes that was my point. Sometimes a car is the best option!

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/07/2023 14:58

“the insults coming in are poor really”

You are not being insulted ivykaty44. You are being told that you’re wrong and that your blinkered stance is foolish.

Again, do you have children?

Absolutely not.

I am saying that if there wasn't a red flag the consequences would have been so bad that the attention and focus from the media in the aftermath would have solved the issues with the ongoing protests.

For that reason I am sad that there was a red flag.

freetheunicorn1 · 22/07/2023 15:00

Maddy70 · 22/07/2023 14:41

I dont believe a sun headline. I also know that JSO would not prevent a sick child going to hospital. If they were made aware.

Have you not watched the video? Available in many places not just the vile rag that is The Sun. That mother begged to protesters to move, other drivers asked them to let her through. They knew she was trying to take her baby to the hospital but didn't care!

ElEmEnOhPee · 22/07/2023 15:00

I'd love to see what would happen if someone run one of the protesters over and mangled their leg. Would they be told to jump on a bike and cycle to hospital or hop on the tube? Or would they get mummy and daddy to fly a private jet down to rescue them 🙄Pathetic people, most of them have no idea about living in the real world, like being hit by the COL crisis and then being prevented from going to work because some jobless privileged arseholes want to throw a tantrum and get some attention.

GreenWheat · 22/07/2023 15:01

I really resent the amount of police resources these arseholes suck up. It's running into millions of pounds and keeps police officers away from areas of real crime.

Quite. In cases where they aren’t causing a hazard, ie gluing themselves to windows/chaining themselves to corporate buildings, etc. I wouldn’t bother detaching them. Just leave them there.
