I don't know what these people think they are achieving. I think the mum was in a cab which looks like an electric car anyway, they refuse to let her get past.

I’m going to post this again and make no apology for it.

JSO are a flea on the belly of a dog. They are insignificant. Focus on the actual issue.

Fleas need swatting.

Well said ignore the frothers.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/jul/24/global-catastrophe-matters-more-than-pause-in-sport-just-stop-oil-protests

The outraged reaction to Just Stop Oil’s mild behaviour – and entirely appropriate sense of panic about the planetary catastrophe we are already experiencing – says far more about us than it does about the activists themselves. We’re happy to champion the idea of free speech, and we all agree that Something Must Be Done about humanity’s impending collapse. But we’d really like people to do it somewhere else, some other time, somewhere it doesn’t interfere with our chosen escapism. In that respect, the protesters’ messages are the perfect way of calling us all out.

So you agree that the orange lot are distracting the public from important issues?

Maybe JSO are a fifth column, planted by the oil companies to make the public back oil exploration.

JSO are keeping threads like this popping up, they keep climate change in the news, where pro climate change and anti climate change then discuss issues.

Whether they will be able to change politics with their wish to stop oil licences, I don't know but that is there aim presently

I dont think they do. They are distracting.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 24/07/2023 13:03

JSO is not the only cause of traffic jams. Most are just caused by car drivers. Any other traffic jam would also have caused this mum to be delayed. So while I understand her frustration, we need fewer cars on the road.

Agree with @WildUnchartedWaters not seeing discussion re climate change just the annoying and rage towards the tangerine nightmare!

They will definitely have been infiltrated by the security services by now, and it has crossed my mind that the more egregious conduct, such as the incident with deliberately stopping the newborn accessing the hospital appointment, might have been advocated for by security service agents, in order to turn the public off JSO and it’s message. Because what right-thinking person thinks that is ok? You have to be blinded by self-righteousness to think it’s acceptable. Anyone in JSO with any experience of effective campaigning will know this. It’s only hot-headed extremists (and fifth columnists…) who would advocate otherwise.

If true, it’s definitely doing the trick. But die-hard zealots will doggedly plough on in their defence of this kind of thing, regardless of how overwhelming the evidence is that it’s counterproductive. That’s the psychology of zealots, unfortunately.

if that ever comes up its a very much all or nothing situation. People cant own cars and not use them. Just look at some of the comments when I suggest we are conditioned to use cars. People through there arms up and say how bad public transport is - yes its bad and thats exactly what I mean by conditioned to use cars. If our public transport was made useable and easy to use then we would be so conditioned to use cars all the time as there would be a very viable alternative.

Driving 100 miles on a motorway but walking 1 mile to the shop, cycling two miles to work or driving 20 miles to to work. Not every single trip we make needs to be driven, unless of course you literally live in the middle of nowhere - then of course there is going to be a much greater need for a car.

Having the same amount of cars but less on the road at any one time would aid conditions for free flowing traffic and less congestion - but the conditions need to be arranged to make that happen. You start talking about 15 minute cites where the conditions would be viable for it to happen and people get very angry about stopping their freedoms and keeping them prisoners. Yet the alternative is mass congestion and people not getting to their destination on occasions when it really is important due to traffic.

Sigmama · 24/07/2023 13:53

Sigmama · 24/07/2023 13:55

Alot fewer traffic jams round my way during school holidays...

DandelionBurdockAndGin · 24/07/2023 14:02

I've heard a lot of people suggest this - on plus side at least it's means people are separating these groups from people actually making and campaign and lobbing for the desperately needed changes.

I do love idea that the Greek fires and heat wave affecting USA and Europe aren't keeping climate change in the news headlines actual effects with science and predication frequently attached -no that all down to a pressure group who pull silly stunts.

Just look at some of the comments when I suggest we are conditioned to use cars.

You drive - you seem to drive for pleasure - lecturing many of us on here myself included who don't drive - who don't have cars. It's classic everyone else to make changes so I can carry on doing as I please.

We need more investment in public transport - very much so outside London where many area are losing the limited bus services they have- and frankly an end to the strikes because it does make it much harder to navigate round.

None of which has anything to do with blocking traffic and preventing a mother taking a taxi to get her baby to hospital.

A lot fewer traffic jams round my way during school holidays...

Cheaper warp around or more flexibility around work day times are or school buses could help - as these days many parents are both working and rushing to drop off at school and then get to work - so fewer walk these days to primary at least. But yes school traffic is a huge problem everywhere I've lived.

They are keeping themselves in the news. No one sees them on the TV and says "I should treat the prospect of climate change more seriously". Instead they say "what a bunch of c*s"

The mother in question was in a bloody taxi, so presumably she does not own a car.

But remember according to the fuckers at jso she is awful for getting in a car, owned by her or not, she should have walked or stuck the baby on the front of a bike like E.T, how DARE she think of her own sick child, it was probably only dandruff remember according to some on here!
(That video is so stressful to me and am sure others who have had to take that stressful journey!)

I drive, I don't own a car though. It's a classic you make assumptions about someone but they are incorrect as you made them up. You have no idea of the changes Ive made but decide for me, what I do or don't do including whether I drive for pleasure.

ivykaty44 · 24/07/2023 19:20

It does, the comment that was being replied to was about traffic jams happening constantly which also block people from getting to places they need to be and less driving would reduce traffic jams

If you increase public transport and have one bus with 30 people on it instead of 30 private cars, you reduce traffic congestion and increase traffic flow for people that need to be driving.

Its not lecturing to point this out, its just facts that less traffic decreases congestion

BordoisAgain · 24/07/2023 19:37

If you increase public transport and have one bus with 30 people on it instead of 30 private cars,

That's assuming the people in the cars are going to the same place the bus is going...

Pretty warped logic on your part. It was an analogy, not intended to be taken at face value. If someone says that we should "grasp the nettle", do you think that they literally mean physically grabbing hold of something painful? No, it's a figurative way of saying to get on with a difficult task.

They wouldn't have moved aside even for a bike. They're of the same ilk as the protestors who glued themselves to an electric train.

I challenge you to find a person who wasn't previously conscious of climate change who has suddenly woken up after seeing one of these protests.
