Important Issue: Cafes that butter your toast

What the fuck is with cafes that butter your toast for you?!

I fucking hate it.

I always say 'no butter please' or 'butter to the side only'. Only for my toast to come, more often than not, soggy and DRIPPING in butter, to someone else's idea of an ideal butter to bread ratio.

Butter is such a personal thing. When they do it for me it just fucking ruins my toast.

Sometimes I send it back, but DH hates it when I do.

AIBU?

Yes there are bigger issues in the world but I can't do much about Putin or COL or climate change.

Thank goodness they use butter. If it were margarine it would give me the rage. Years ago when I used to work in a city centre I loved that you could buy buttered toast in Greggs.

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/07/2023 12:00

To be fair, if they haven't given you what you've ordered then you're right to send it back if it means it's not how want it/find it palatable.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 22/07/2023 12:02

I feel the same when people put gravy on my Sunday dinner.

ThinWomansBrain · 22/07/2023 12:06

Leon do amazing dripping with butter toast - thick crunchy sourdough that the butter doesn't sink into & drown.
But I agree it can be dreadful if the butter isn't put on at the right point,

Skinnermarink · 22/07/2023 12:08

Thing is though if they leave the butter on the side for you to do it, more often than not the roast has gone lukewarm and cold and butter needs to be applied straight away. It’s just wrong otherwise.

Skinnermarink · 22/07/2023 12:08

TOAST not roast ffs

JaceLancs · 22/07/2023 12:08

I hate it when milk is put in tea for me or even worse tonic in gin!!’
I like to decide my own ratio

Ffsmakeitstop · 22/07/2023 12:09

We're the opposite. We absolutely hate having to juggle a full breakfast. Hot drinks and buttering toast on a table that's not really big enough and not enough plates and the butter rarely spreads easily. We are both pleased to get toast ready to eat so yabu.

DH is the same. 'I'm not paying a cafe to prepare my food and then having to butter my own toast like I would at home'.

@SunRainStorm

My pet peeve with toast is that when [Poached or Fried] egg on toast is advertised I expect just that! Not sitting on the plate beside the toast so that you have to fish it up breaking it probably with mess all over the plate.

Rainbowshit · 22/07/2023 12:21

YANBU.

I hate folk messing with my food. I remember when a friend served us spaghetti Bolognese and not only had she mixed in the sauce, she had cut up the pasta. I nearly sent it back. 😉

🤮

Cut up your pasta?!

Unless you're a preschooler that's just a violation of your rights.

My boss used to bring in breakfast each Friday from the local sandwich place. So bacon sandwiches always buttered(yuk sorry), or toasted fruit tea cake and both were always with margarine not butter. What was worse was that they clearly used the same knife for all the sandwiches so there was always a strong onion aftertaste. 🤢

Oh no, butter isn't an issue. I can fix that, I can scrape off if the excess unmelted bits.

It IS an issue when they cut my toast into bloody triangles. I can't undo that. I'm not 5. I'm a fully grown adult capable of cutting my own toast thanks. And now you've made it unfixable. What if I wanted to make a bacon butty with it? A foldover bacon butty. What if I just wanted to go renegade and eat a whole uncut slice? Ruined. Thats being sent STRAIGHT back.

BigPussyEnergy · 22/07/2023 12:26

i sometimes take my own butter as I hate when they use marg on toast Envy. I’d definitely send it back and the same with gravy or custard, I always ask for it on the side and if my meal arrives with it slopped all over the pie or crumble etc I’ll send it back and ask for it as I wanted it - I hate soggy things with a passion. Im the same with cereal, if someone gets me cereal they need to bring it asap not leave it while they finish the tea and by then the cornflakes are all soft.

@Robyn847

I'm not British but a British person told me that triangles are the 'posh' way of cutting toast - is that right or where they pulling my leg?

But yes I agree with you. Hands off my toast!

Sociopathic behaviour to let your cereal get soggy.

Please report to UN.

Ooooh this might be a polarising topic to mix or not to mix spaghetti pasta and bolognaise 😜
I Always mix some of the sauce into the spaghetti first and then put it in the bowl/plate then pour on more sauce. I grew up with it not being mixed, just spaghetti then sauce on top.

Cold buttered toast.. Mmmmm lovely. 😁

JulieHoney · 22/07/2023 12:48

Noooooo! Then you're stuck scraping firm butter across cold toast. Horrible stuff. Toast should come buttered and warm.

As a child, I went to a friend's house and was served spaghetti with bolognese sauce to one side. I mixed it together and the family looked quite shocked. They said that they weren't allowed to do that as their father thought it looked disgusting. They all then ate theirs without mixing it. The father wasn't even there at the time. Even as a kid, I thought he must be unreasonably controlling, possibly abusively so.

WandaWonder · 22/07/2023 12:56

If I wanted to butter my own toast I would stay home and do it

I go to cafes to I pay people to do it all for me
