Important Issue: Cafes that butter your toast

SunRainStorm · 22/07/2023 11:57

What the fuck is with cafes that butter your toast for you?!

I fucking hate it.

I always say 'no butter please' or 'butter to the side only'. Only for my toast to come, more often than not, soggy and DRIPPING in butter, to someone else's idea of an ideal butter to bread ratio.

Butter is such a personal thing. When they do it for me it just fucking ruins my toast.

Sometimes I send it back, but DH hates it when I do.

AIBU?

Yes there are bigger issues in the world but I can't do much about Putin or COL or climate change.

Absolutely you can! Real butter and Yorkshire Gold tea!

@Lwrenagain , may I please be added to the guest list for this breakfast feast? Cold chewy toast with real butter is fecking wonderful. I sometimes make toast and leave it to sit for an hour to reach the appropriate level of cold chewiness.

TheFairyCaravan · 22/07/2023 17:25

I don’t like butter or marg so they’d be getting it sent straight back if they ignored me asking for no butter.

RedRosie · 22/07/2023 17:27

There's never enough butter 😭

StopStartStop · 22/07/2023 17:32

Don't butter my toast. Give me a wrapped portion, or a few wrapped portions.
Don't put milk in my tea - I don't take it.
Don't assume I take sugar, I haven't for over fifty years.
And as for avocado... urgh.

I'm sitting in a café wanting a bacon butty. I mean, I know I eat a lot but they're not going to need a machine to keep up with my consumption. 🙄

Yeah, I was thinking there of the sandwiches you buy at a station shop. But even in a cafe, they want to produce your sandwich quickly, and cover a slice with filling, add second slice and cut is going to be quicker than filling on two slices, fold over twice, move on to same plate.

ltappleby · 22/07/2023 17:35

I’m jealous that you manage to get toast dripping with butter. When this happens to me I barely get a scrape - we should swap cafes!

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/07/2023 17:35

"Don't put milk in my tea - I don't take it.* Oh, it's so difficult to get anyone to give you tea without milk!

And if you are going to give me tea without milk, I don't need space in the cup for the milk - fill it up to the top!

I'm 45!! I CAN MAKE MY OWN BACON BUTTY! Just give me the toast and I'll put the bacon, or sausage, on. Might throw the fried egg on their too.

nzborn · 22/07/2023 17:40

Went to a cafe today for brunch had a bacon sausage bap and hash browns on the side no butter on the bap I had to ask for some.

Toadsnotfrogs · 22/07/2023 17:18

My favourite cafe is under new ownership and they used some sort of marg on my toast instead of proper butter, on the side.

The dirty dirty bastards.

That is disgusting. How dare they trick you like that! Marge is the devil's work.

Rainbowshit · 22/07/2023 17:55

For me things like salt, butter, jam, gravy etc are very personal. One man's skimpy is another's drowning...but I get why its done at source.
However if you've requested the butter separate and they don't deliver that you're perfectly entitled to requestca replacement. Scraping butter off does not work.

This is so true. DH likes to smother everything in pepper or mayo. He is very much in the more is more camp. Whereas I am definitely less is more.

He's learnt over the years not to mess with my food.

There's a new cafe near me that trades on being a calorie laden, egg yolk dripping down your fingers, dirty dirty, piled high breakfast barm place. With free cups of tea, or even hot Vimto. And then they also do avocado on toast and overnight oats. Its just such a contrast. I'm not sure they have their client base figured out yet.

Maybe they want to cater for couples of groups with different breakfast preferences? I love a fry up or bacon barm on occasion but rarely feel like one in the morning nowadays.

BrandNewBicep · 22/07/2023 18:12

I used to feel very strongly that I wanted to butter my own fruit teacake. Then the cafe I now go to, butters it for you. After being mildly horrified, I love it. It is all melty and delicious and drips down my chin. Gorgeous and no faffing trying to spread rock hard butter. Sometimes, change can be a good thing.

renamedbutsame · 22/07/2023 18:15

Someone's cafe make the toaster in one place, the actual breakfast in another area and until the whole English breakfast goes plated all on one place, the bread is totally cold. You know what a cold toasted bread is like. And yes, it comes with butter on the side.....is this better though ...

Mumtothreegirlies · 22/07/2023 18:20

I’ve never been served buttered toast, it’s always came with the butter in those foil packets.
but the thing I can’t stand is when someone makes shit tea, either just dipping it for a few seconds or when they pour the milk in with the teabag still brewing.
can abide by sweetcorn on a roast dinner either. Love sweetcorn, love roasts but never the Twain shall meet.

Georgyporky · 22/07/2023 18:21

I'm going back to basics here. Why go to a cafe for breakfast?
Better & cheaper at home.
I've only done it once, & got into an argument over "eggs Benedict" - not toast.

Hotels are another matter. If it's a buffet, you toast your own bread & do whatever you want with it.
If it's brought to the table & it's wrong, you politely decline & ask for what you ordered. And usually have to insist on more butter than one tiny packet

Hufflepods · 22/07/2023 18:30

@Georgyporky by that logic why do anything ever since it’s cheaper at home. People like to eat out, it’s hardly a revelation.

Lwrenagain · 22/07/2023 18:39

EsmeGythaMagrat · 22/07/2023 17:05

Sorry that was meant to quote @Lwrenagain

I'd love to host a told cold toast and fancy butter morning for you 🥰

BackOfTheMum5net · 22/07/2023 18:42

If it’s not buttered the second it leaves the toaster, it’s frankly ruined!

amicissimma · 22/07/2023 18:43

I was recently having a discussion about toast racks (yeah, I know, exciting) with an American friend. She had never experienced a toast rack and thought that toast should be delivered in a soggy pile, wrapped in a napkin. I'm a toast rack fan. I prefer my toast slices crisply separated. If delivery takes too long it can get cold, but I'd rather that than warm, soggy toast.

And, thank you, I'll apply my own butter, to my precise requirements. Ideally warmish toast and soft butter so I don't end up with a greasy mess.

FFSwhatisthis · 22/07/2023 18:47

Riapia · 22/07/2023 14:06

Toast should be buttered the instant it comes out of the toaster.
Not after it’s been carried across the kitchen and definitely not in the minutes it takes to get to a table.

Exactly, I'd butter it in the toaster if it was easy & safe!

FFSwhatisthis · 22/07/2023 18:56

SunRainStorm · 22/07/2023 14:40

Great name.

I agree, but it seems to happen no matter which cafe I go to. Maybe it's too loud and they just hear 'butter' and assume I want butter?

I hate it. I like to have Vegemite on toast and IMO butter makes it taste creamy and not sharp.

This is a British forum so I won't even get started on the atrocity of someone else spreading your Vegemite for you.

@SunRainStorm

thats a shootable offence.

my friends DH does all the cooking/feeding & years ago he asked me if I wanted a lot or a little marmite (U.K., no Vegemite in those days) and I said 'a lot please' (a bit nervous) well, the knife had barely seen the pot. I thought he'd misheard until I saw my friends who only has a little... so little he must just wave the pot over the toast! They still say they don't know how I can have it 'so strong' (about a teaspoon short of what I'd have at home 😂😂)

I eat out a lot, but really can't see the point of breakfast unless it's in an hotel etc.
Having to get showered & dressed, then drive etc before eating is not for me.

FFSwhatisthis · 22/07/2023 18:59

SunRainStorm · 22/07/2023 14:51

Thanks that's what I think.

It's not like I'm asking them for a complicated meal to be re-cooked from scratch. I literally just want them to put a fresh piece of bread in the toaster and then bring it to me plain.

DH finds it mortifying though 🙈

You don't have a toast problem, you have a DH problem! Tell him to stop being so wet (like your toast)
