To ask DH to try on outfits before trip

DH and I are going on a two-week trip around different places in Japan and are each taking only one carryon bag. So every outfit needs to be chosen wisely. I asked him to try on outfits before the trip to see what would be best to pack and if we needed to buy him anything else (like no-show socks, another t-shirt, etc). He thought it was unreasonable to do a “fashion show” trying on each outfit before packing to see what works and what we needed to buy. Am I being unreasonable?

He brought up the idea of putting this to a vote. If you vote YABU, he never needs to try on outfits before a trip again. If you vote YANBU, he should check his outfits before trips.

If you’re only taking carry on, every gram has to count so of course he can’t risk wasting any space at all.

That said, I like to travel with lots of choice of outfits, but I take a mahoosive suitcase that I check in so I can have this luxury.

He can potentially buy stuff when out there if necessary, but having travelled extensively in Japan, if he is more than about 5” 8” or at all overweight he will really struggle with this.

IamSmarticus · 16/07/2023 21:27

I don't think he needs to actually try things on to know what works together. Surely you could work that out just by looking at the individual items?

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMeAgain · 16/07/2023 21:27

DH and I took 25kg each plus carry on and still checked outfits before went away last month.

QueSyrahSyrah · 16/07/2023 21:27

YANBU. We went away for a couple of nights city break recently and my trusty shorts had mysteriously shrunk over the winter definitely not my arse that has mysteriously expanded which ruled out 2 of my carefully curated outfits.

Try it all on OP's DH!

Callyem · 16/07/2023 21:27

YABU - he's an adult and can pack what he likes without needing to try outfits on in advance!

Cinnamope · 16/07/2023 21:28

Why are you taking one carry on for two weeks?

KittytheHare · 16/07/2023 21:28

Seriously, if my husband asked me to do this I would have a major strop. He's a grown man - if his outfits 'don't work' that's his problem. I think that sounds really controlling on your part.

Carbonicalloy · 16/07/2023 21:30

Voted YABU because although I would do thos before a carry on only trip, I wouldn't expect my DH too. He would just take a selection of clothes that fit him and fit in the bag. He cares much less about what he wears than I do: if it's clean, fits and is appropriate for the occasion then the is happy whereas I will try on and fret about the right variations of outfits for different days.

Why are you taking one carry on for two weeks?

This. Utter madness.

gogomoto · 16/07/2023 21:35

He's a man, why are you surprised???Grin

For our last cruise I started planning outfits 3 months out, alterations needed etc. dp remembered the bight before he hadn't dry cleaned his dinner suit! He literally was packing 30 minutes before the bus was due to take us to the coach station! He bought shirts in Southampton where we stayed the night before, they did have a good selection, I suspect they get quite a few male cruise customers who forgot to buy extra, they even had full dinner suits for sale

BarbaraofSeville · 16/07/2023 21:36

Surely he's capable of packing for a holiday without you approving his choices or deciding whether he has enough socks? And if not, it'll be him who's washing things in the hotel sink every night, so just leave him to it. YABU.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 16/07/2023 21:36

Who checks outfits by putting them
on before they pack?! Also, who only takes a carry on bag for 2 weeks? If you’re moving around just take a rucksack!

NewtScamandersNiffler · 16/07/2023 21:37

It isn’t really madness to travel light in Japan as most hotels have a self-service laundry costing c. 300-600 yen to wash and tumble dry a load. The bullet trains let you take on small suitcases if they fit in the luggage racks and you need to book a luggage space for anything larger.

I’d try things on and check I still felt comfortable. Plus, you take your shoes off so often in Japan that smart socks are essential.

MonkeysandParrots · 16/07/2023 21:38

I think it makes perfect sense to try the outfits on before you go, work out what’s most comfortable, what’s goes with other stuff etc. Don’t see the issue myself.

Also, having spent a while in Japan earlier this year myself, I think just taking carry on makes sense. It means you can carry your own luggage places as you move around the country and won’t have to use luggage forwarding services so will save money.

Plus, if you do end up needing to buy stuff over there, Uniqlo carry their whole range and are everywhere.

Lastly, every hotel we stayed in had a full range of complimentary toiletries so don’t worry about taking too much of those either.

have a great holiday!

UsernameNotAvailableArghh · 16/07/2023 21:38

Hey Breadsnroses DH is the luggage allowance a red herring? Do you dress like Sue Pollards twin brother and your wife doesn’t know how to address your lack of dress sense?

TheWayoftheLeaf · 16/07/2023 21:38

I don't think I've ever tried outfits on before a holiday. You have eyes and can see if they work just by looking at them on the bed.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 16/07/2023 21:39

YABU.

I'm sure a grown man is more than capable of packing his own outfits for a holiday without trying them all on first.

Divebar2021 · 16/07/2023 21:39

Why are you micromanaging his wardrobe and packing ?

Oysterbabe · 16/07/2023 21:40

I would refuse to do this so it's a yabu from me.

Coolhwip · 16/07/2023 21:40

Cinnamope · 16/07/2023 21:28

Why are you taking one carry on for two weeks?

It’s perfectly doable. We each had a carry on only for 3 weeks in the US.

Sparkletastic · 16/07/2023 21:40

Unless he's recently gained or lost weight then no he doesn't need to try things on.

LolaSmiles · 16/07/2023 21:40

I like to try on and plan a capsule for travelling light, but voted YABU because he's a grown man who is more than capable of taking responsibility for his own packing and working out if he needs to buy anything.

LobsterCrab · 16/07/2023 21:41

It's up to him OP! If he doesn't take your advice and ends up wishing he'd packed differently, that's on him. Step back.

yikesanotherbooboo · 16/07/2023 21:41

Even if I was tempted to I wouldn't tell my DH how to prepare for a holiday. It sounds a bit disrespectful.

Rogue1001MNer · 16/07/2023 21:42

Ooo.

The voting is very evenly split!!!!
