To think they shouldn't ban vapes?

I've just heard on the news that there is talk of banning vapes.

Vaping successfully got me and thousands of others off the cigarettes when all else failed. They're safer, cheaper, less offensive.

They say the fruity flavours entice children, well so do alcoholic drinks like WKD, fruit ciders etc. You don't see any bans on alcohol coming into play. Alcohol is a far more problematic 'vice' than vaping.

Adult vapers are not responsible for somebody else's child deciding to vape any more than a parent having a glass of wine of an evening is encouraging children to drink.

Why can't we move towards mass recycling them as opposed to an outright ban? I would happily recycle every one I use. Many would. Gladly. It's not just about the environmental issue though is it?

What happened to banning cigarettes? That never came to fruition did it, perhaps they should start there.

Popcorn lung is bullshit
The chemical that was reported to cause it is found in higher quantities in cigarettes

From cancer research

Some of the liquids in e-cigarettes used to contain diacetyl. This led to the idea that e-cigarettes might cause popcorn lung. In the UK, diacetyl was banned in e-cigarette liquids under the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) in 2016. So, e-liquids sold in the UK shouldn’t contain diacetyl.
And there have been no confirmed cases of popcorn lung linked to e-cigarettes.

Come talk to me when you have seen a 19 year old struggle to get off a ventilator.

Convince yourself it's safe.
I don't know you, I don't care, vape all you like.

TrishM80 · 15/07/2023 22:45

I live by a simple creed, anything you breathe into your lungs that isn't fresh air is not going to work out well for you.

The shit is going to hit the fan about the health risks of vaping.

@bonfirebash I understand your point but UK based studies have similar findings. Vapes are terrible worldwide

All that says is some things may be dangerous and then goes about about vaping injury in America where there was people vaping vitamin E among other things

The study papers on non USA patients were including 7 people

When you scroll down

"Currently, the volume and pattern of adverse respiratory events reported in association with e-cigarette use or vaping in the UK do not seem to reflect the trends emerging from the USA. This difference of magnitude may be due to differences in regulations.."

About the USA cases

"Although cutting the e-liquid with cannabinoids has been implicated in ∼80% of cases"

They go on to talk about websites and say
"76% claim that the product does not produce second-hand smoke"

Well no, because it's not smoke. Which kind of makes the entire written thing incredibly biased especially as they then say (about the websites)

"64% have a smoking cessation–related claim"

Good! That's what they were meant for and they should be promoted for people giving up smoking

I think they're revolting things, and I can't stand the sickly sweet waft any more than I can bear the waft of a cigarette.

It's mind boggling that given how much we know about cancer that anyone would want this shit inside their lungs.

Absolutely this!! All types of vaping should be banned!

100% need banning. My toddlers are constantly finding them at the park. They're discarded all over the place. Nasty things. Unbelievably wastful and very unpleasant walking through the clouds of artificially scented "smoke".

I completely agree

I disagree, I think they should be on prescription for people who need them to give up cigarettes.
spoken like a true non smoker

I used to smoke.

Did you see the thread where the OP thinks that chicken eggs are periods? There's no topping that.

I’m astonished how many people think vapes should be prescription only. Has anyone tried recently to get a GP appointment for actual illness? I can’t imagine adding vapers to the wait list will help the NHS or the public.

I don’t agree with or use the single use plastic ones though.

You don’t need appointments for repeat prescriptions.

Bazinga007 · 16/07/2023 01:46

Ban them or tax them the same as cigarettes.

You don't think adults like nice flavours?

And I have never seen any marketing for vapes, let alone aimed at children.

To be fair. You are quite unusual.. There are massive displays right by the sweets in our local shops, with flavours like cherry pie .lemon meringue and cola clearly positioned at child height and accessible. Tiktok has been discussed as a hotbed of product placement for vales aimed at teens etc.

Of course the sweet flavours and eye catching colours are a ploy. We haven't got an epidemic of young people trading nicotine patches or gum outside school, have we?

Even as an aid to giving up they're pretty imperfect. They help with the need to have something in your fingers and that hand to mouth, inhalation habit. But you can't accurately titrate the amount of nicotine.

It would be better to have a flavourless, near pointless vape to help with the behavioural side of the addiction, whilst using patches or other forms of NRT to wean off the nicotine in a controlled and step by step way. What we've got now is people vaping as a completely stand alone activity with no pathway or support to stopping that.

You don’t need appointments for repeat prescriptions.

Smoking cessation services are provided via large Public Health contracts. Many local authorities use external providers of services and places like pharmacies and gp surgeries to run them. It doesn't mean it's the gp that sees the patient. Even if the patient does make a gp appointment and ask for help to stop smoking, they will be referred to a specialist advisor or service for a programme of support.

I personally think it's a bit daft that we then give all smoking cessation products free on prescription to people who were previously spending multiples of that amount on cigarettes and could presumably make a contribution like a prescription charge to the millions the products cost. By not recouping any of the cost, these services don't have the budget to extend their reach at all.

R3dSh035 · 16/07/2023 02:08

By reducing access to vapes their reach need will be reduced anyway along with the inevitable fall out from the damage vape chemicals are going to bring to the NHS.
