To think they shouldn't ban vapes?

I've just heard on the news that there is talk of banning vapes.

Vaping successfully got me and thousands of others off the cigarettes when all else failed. They're safer, cheaper, less offensive.

They say the fruity flavours entice children, well so do alcoholic drinks like WKD, fruit ciders etc. You don't see any bans on alcohol coming into play. Alcohol is a far more problematic 'vice' than vaping.

Adult vapers are not responsible for somebody else's child deciding to vape any more than a parent having a glass of wine of an evening is encouraging children to drink.

Why can't we move towards mass recycling them as opposed to an outright ban? I would happily recycle every one I use. Many would. Gladly. It's not just about the environmental issue though is it?

What happened to banning cigarettes? That never came to fruition did it, perhaps they should start there.

AIBU?

My 18 year old has a job and her own money and has done for quite some time. She pays for everything on her phone. What do you suggest I do?

I definitely don't want them banned!

I have a reusable one but I need disposables as well. I can't always be fiddling around with filling up.

Why would you 'need' disposables if you have a refillable?

overitunderit · 15/07/2023 19:09

Disagree entirely. They should be banned.

Superdupes · 15/07/2023 19:07

I hope they get banned, so many kids at ds's school use them.

Is there a health issue from vape use?

Zoologydragon · 15/07/2023 19:09

Anyone who saw my original thread in may will know that without disposable vapes I wouldn't have stopped smoking.

If they weren't prominent and obviously miles cheaper than fags I wouldn't have taken a punt and tried one.

If I had to go to the Dr I wouldn't have got one (we all know how difficult it is to get an appointment if your leg is all but hanging off....let alone to get a vape)!

I'm nearly 3 months deep into not smoking because of an elf bar. I only stayed on disposables for under a month but for me, at the point of quitting a 40 a day habit, they were a life changer; as they were for others on my post.

On prescription they need to be dull flavours and non colourful packaging too.

Absolutely. There is zero need for strawberry cheesecake flavour or blue raspberry flavour disposable vapes selling for a fiver from a dodgy corner shop. Children are getting hooked on nicotine from these and it's affecting their health and lives.

Well heaven help those who have to spend a few minutes refilling. My god, this must be the best example of laziness I've heard in a long time.

A dodgy corner shop ffs 😂

I don't suppose it's dodgy when you're buying your bread and milk there.. or wine.. or whatever else.

Banning 'disposable' vapes that should never have existed in the first place? Absolutely yes.

Yes, absolutely.

Fuck the environment and children? Because you're lazy?

Seems reasonable.

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/07/2023 19:12

Vaping helped me quit smoking but I bought my own vape. I really hate the disposable ones, I live semi rurally and they are bloody everywhere. It's so awful. They have also encouraged a lot of youngsters to take up vaping. Banning them will only encourage smoking I think. I don't honestly know how you stop people from throwing the bastard things on the floor.

R3dSh035 · 15/07/2023 19:12

Frankly your addiction doesn’t trump masses of children becoming addicted to nicotine, having their health wrecked and damage to the environment.

Swg · 15/07/2023 19:12

It's only the disposable ones being banned. The problem is that they're quite small and keep making their way into general recycling. They've been responsible for a few big waste fires now for this reason.

Scienceadvisory · 15/07/2023 19:13

You haven't even bothered to read the headlines correctly so I'm guessing you didn't bother at all with the articles before you started getting in a tizz. Perhaps read the articles first so you know what you are getting angry about. Will save you time in the future.

It's not about laziness.

The refillable ones leak into your bag / pocket and ruin clothes when they're bashed about in the process of waking. The refillable ones are bigger, clunky and heavy. They're not suitable for carrying around with you on your day to day comings and goings.

Would you want to carry a big flask of tea around with you all day and have that leak all over you?

I disagree, I think they should be on prescription for people who need them to give up cigarettes.

Agreed

They're not banning all vapes.

Just the disposable ones

We throw away too much stuff, anything that reduces single-use products is good

I know exactly what I'm getting angry about thanks, you condescending so and so, I smoke disposables.

I have one, it isn’t clunky or heavy (I’m not a borrower afterall), it doesn’t leak either.

wonderstuff · 15/07/2023 19:16

Disposable vapes are a disaster. Not recyclable and super popular with kids. Reusable ones don’t seem to last long either (although that could just be my clumsy dh?).

Im a teacher and we had an awful problem with cigarettes but I’ve not seen them in school for years, what changed was them being behind the counter, not on display, completely stopped kids getting hold of them. Absolutely no reason why we can’t do the same with vapes, nicotine is incredibly addictive and these kids are being exploited by industry hooking them in and keeping them because it’s vv difficult to break nicotine habit.

Topseyt123 · 15/07/2023 19:16

They only seem to be talking about banning the disposable vapes, thankfully, which I think is fair because the plastic waste from them is dreadful for the environment, and also the fire hazard in the back of bin lorries if irresponsibly disposed of.

I certainly wouldn't want all vapes banned. It took us years and a lot of heartache to get my dyed in the wool chain smoker mother off cigarettes after nearly dying from pneumonia last Christmas. Vapes (rechargeable ones) were the only way she agreed to do it (with daily nicotine patches too). If they were banned then she would go straight back to cigarettes, which were hellish for us to breathe in when visiting her and would most likely kill her very quickly now.

Vapes need to stay. They have a place in the process of getting people off cigarettes. Just ban the disposable ones which seem to be the most attractive to children and teenagers (I know it wouldn't totally work, but it would make things easier anyway).
