To think they shouldn't ban vapes?

I've just heard on the news that there is talk of banning vapes.

Vaping successfully got me and thousands of others off the cigarettes when all else failed. They're safer, cheaper, less offensive.

They say the fruity flavours entice children, well so do alcoholic drinks like WKD, fruit ciders etc. You don't see any bans on alcohol coming into play. Alcohol is a far more problematic 'vice' than vaping.

Adult vapers are not responsible for somebody else's child deciding to vape any more than a parent having a glass of wine of an evening is encouraging children to drink.

Why can't we move towards mass recycling them as opposed to an outright ban? I would happily recycle every one I use. Many would. Gladly. It's not just about the environmental issue though is it?

What happened to banning cigarettes? That never came to fruition did it, perhaps they should start there.

Awful things should be prescription only to pack up smoking.

You do realise that NICE guidelines (that's the NHS BTW) advocate them over smoking.

Also, some NHS areas like mine have given training to Totally Wicked E-Vape, and they are given them on a prescription by the NHS and have NHS Certificates in their stores

Totally Wicked are the founding fathers of Evape in this country. They have a completely clean toxin report on their website.

Yes, I gave up using them. It's the disposable ones they are looking at banning. Not the other type, which are refillable.

Stomacharmeleon · 15/07/2023 20:34

I really hope the disposables get banned.

I work in a special Ed school and every child smokes vapes. They hang off the gate smoking one, they smuggle them in secreted in their socks and smoke in the toilets, they are removed and confiscated until a parent collects (they are returned to said child before they hit the gate), they are obsessed with how long they last, whether they are Rick and Morty's or lazy Mary's, which shop will sell 6,8,10g's. How quickly they get through them. They cause us HUGE issues.

It's horrifying to listen to and they do NOT equate smoking vapes to cigarettes.
I specifically teach a lesson on vapes and they have no idea.

It is an epidemic.

Mortimermay · 15/07/2023 20:35

There is research to show that the vast majority of teenagers who were vaping regularly had previously smoked cigarettes or at least tried cigarettes, of those who hadn't they only tried vapes a couple of times and didnt continue to do it regularly. So it's difficult to support the idea that kids are all vaping and would never have touched nicotine otherwise - these are in the majority of cases, the kids who would previously have been smoking cigarettes. That's not to say that vaping is healthy and that there wouldn't be long term health effects but they are known to be less unhealthy than cigarettes.
I'm finding some of these comments very judgy. It's interesting that a nicotine addiction doesn't get the same level of empathy or understanding than other Addictions and that people feel free to make some pretty horrible comments to someone about it, which they'd never do if the poster had mentioned an addiction to another substance.
I also think it's interesting that everyone agrees that cigarettes should be hidden away, that it's a "nasty addiction" etc, but no one ever calls for a ban on alcohol or discusses alcohol advertising or the presentation of alcohol in literally every aspect of our lives. Alcohol causes exactly the same health issues as cigarettes and far more issues relating to antisocial behaviour, assault etc.
I do think that disposable vapes do need looked at in terms of their damage to the environment but I wish everyone could just see the hypocrisy of how our society treats nicotine use versus alcohol use.

Is there a health issue from vape use?

I presume so because the Mexican Ministry of Health carried out studies on them and found them to be extremely toxic

What research? My Dd has never had a cigarette. She liked the flavours of vapes and preferred them to the taste of alcohol. All her friends doing it have never smoked. The tastes and designs are collectable. It’s win win. A high, nice taste, pretty packaging. No hangover. Easy to buy online.

What are your dd and her friends putting in their vapes if they're getting high off them ??

R3dSh035 · 15/07/2023 20:45

Buzz, high whatever you want to call it. They puff on them throughout the day. That is a lot of nicotine( and other chemicals).

Sometimeswinning · 15/07/2023 20:46

Not a chance! They'll take your vapes way before that 🤣

It's how you said no hangover, nicotine doesn't give you a high or get you pissed

MintJulia · 15/07/2023 20:48

As far as I'm concerned they should ban all disposable vapes.

Anyone using them to give up tobacco can use a re-usable unit, and should get the liquid on prescription.

Other than that, sell it in plain packaging, no flavours, to adults only. It's more addictive than tobacco and twice as stupid.

GotMooMilk · 15/07/2023 20:48

Pix56 · 15/07/2023 19:19

Utterly weak parenting maybe...

Interesting jump to blaming the government for your own child’s behaviour…
OP I fully support the ban. I am a young people’s nurse and the amount of kids vaping is horrendous. I’m just waiting for the evidence they contribute to COPD to come out which will be a reality slap for many kids and parents.
Awful things.

R3dSh035 · 15/07/2023 20:48

Well aware of that.

EmmaEmerald · 15/07/2023 20:50

I've been stocking up for a while because I think a ban is highly likely. My newsagent thinks I'm a bit nuts 😂

I had two online deliveries that mysteriously got lost at the delivery depot. I have been refunded but I imagine they got pinched by someone to sell them on.

i think a higher tax might come in before a ban? I dunno.

Currently caring for mum after two falls and vapes have honestly made it easier. I know there was research into nicotine as a mood booster but I think they are reluctant to move forward with that.

Vapes1 · 15/07/2023 19:10

A dodgy corner shop ffs 😂

I don't suppose it's dodgy when you're buying your bread and milk there.. or wine.. or whatever else.

No but it's dodgy if it's selling vapes to under 18s and should be reported. Our school sent a letter to parents warning they are aware of shops selling to children. My immediate response was why haven't they reported these shops to the police.

R3dSh035 · 15/07/2023 20:55

“Interesting jump to blaming the government for your own child’s behaviour…”

The government is permitting a highly addictive substance to be pitched at young people with collectible packaging, additional harmful chemicals and desirable nice tasting flavours.

It’s shameful.

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 15/07/2023 19:09

Is there a health issue from vape use?

Is this a serious question?

It contains propylene glycol used in paint and antifreeze, nicotine, plus other toxic chemicals. They have been found to damage lungs, increase in the likelihood of a heart arrack due to the nicotine raising heart rates and blood pressure.... And that's with relatively short term research, not fully knowing what level of toxic chemicals are in them!

The disposable ones make them more attractive in a way like "aw I'll just buy one more, I'll stop after this one" and the cycle continues.

Papernotplastic · 15/07/2023 20:55

Single use vapes should definitely be banned. I would like to see vape sales restricted to over 25s.

It’s desperately naïve to think it’s some kind of unforeseeable accident that children are vaping. Tobacco companies have actively pursued this market. The old tobacco companies bought out vape companies and have sought to replace their shrinking customer base for tobacco by targeting kids with vaping.

These are kids that have never smoked, most of whom would never have become smokers as adults who are now hooked to nicotine. If you’ve moved to vaping from smoking you know how hard it is to quit nicotine - you couldn’t do it. Addiction changes your brain structure. We’ve managed to normalise 14 year olds addicted to nicotine.

R3dSh035 · 15/07/2023 20:55

They all buy them online.

TheBig4O · 15/07/2023 20:56

Disposable ones should be banned along with those plastic coffee pods.

Raggletagglegypsy · 15/07/2023 20:57

Absolutely, they certainly should be banned! I litter-pick regularly along a mile stretch of countryside road - the verges are littered with the horrid things, with the wires and other electrical components hanging out...disgusting behaviour by disgusting individuals. The problem is, OP, it might be possible to mandate recycling, but you cannot mandate selfish people to behave responsibly.

megletthesecond · 15/07/2023 20:58

I expect their Tory donor mates just don't have shares in vape companies.

FWIW I've litter picked about two vapes in all the years I've litterpicked my town. I have picked up thousands of littered cigarettes, they can ban them too.

R3dSh035 · 15/07/2023 20:58

Totally aimed at kids. It’s appalling.

To think they shouldn't ban vapes?
sweatybettii · 15/07/2023 20:58

@MumGMT a nicotine rush is usually something that happens when you first ever start smoking, as your tolerance builds up it doesn't happen anymore.
