To think they shouldn't ban vapes?

I've just heard on the news that there is talk of banning vapes.

Vaping successfully got me and thousands of others off the cigarettes when all else failed. They're safer, cheaper, less offensive.

They say the fruity flavours entice children, well so do alcoholic drinks like WKD, fruit ciders etc. You don't see any bans on alcohol coming into play. Alcohol is a far more problematic 'vice' than vaping.

Adult vapers are not responsible for somebody else's child deciding to vape any more than a parent having a glass of wine of an evening is encouraging children to drink.

Why can't we move towards mass recycling them as opposed to an outright ban? I would happily recycle every one I use. Many would. Gladly. It's not just about the environmental issue though is it?

What happened to banning cigarettes? That never came to fruition did it, perhaps they should start there.

I've just hit a month of vaping instead of smoking. I did it once before but stupidly starting smoking again during stresses of lockdown.
Both times I've had very slimline refillable "pen" style vapes.
I'd fully support a ban on over the counter/online disposables.
It can be annoying and fiddly, but so could rolling a fag and I was willing to do that! And fruity flavours etc can go too. A tobacco flavoured vape to get off the cigs should be all anybody needs them for.

Would be happy for prescription to still be an option for anyone wanting to stop smoking that can't use a refillable.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 15/07/2023 20:13

@GetInTheBinThenGetInTheSea go have a look in any place that sells them to see how they are marketed and stop being so bloody blinkered.

It's not about laziness.

The refillable ones leak into your bag / pocket and ruin clothes when they're bashed about in the process of waking. The refillable ones are bigger, clunky and heavy. They're not suitable for carrying around with you on your day to day comings and goings.

Would you want to carry a big flask of tea around with you all day and have that leak all over you?

Here’s a random thought - why not, you know, give up?!! The whole point of vapes, as with gum and patches, was that it was a way to quit smoking and ultimately quit nicotine. Rather than wanting a way for you to conveniently continue your addiction (and to hell with the environment and temptation to kids) , why not try and cure your addiction?

bakewellbride · 15/07/2023 20:15

@bonfirebash 95% less unhealthy to me. I just point blank refuse to use words like 'safe' or 'safer' when it comes to anything like this. There is absolutely nothing safe about smoking! I nearly died from cigarette smoke as a young child so I honestly just find the whole language thing deeply offensive.

Hellocatshome · 15/07/2023 20:08

How do you recycle them out of interest.

Most supermarkets have a place you can drop them off. Same with most vape shops (can't say all because I haven't tried them all but never come across one that wouldn't take them). Standard recycling places will have them too.

I've definitely never thrown one in the bin or left it on the floor. I've lost the odd one out of my pocket, but that's absolutely an accident. I hate losing them!

MumblesParty · 15/07/2023 20:16

GetInTheBinThenGetInTheSea · 15/07/2023 19:24

Do you understand what it's like to have an issue using your hands? Clearly not, or you wouldn't be so incredibly rude and make ridiculous presumptions.

Make this the last time you tell someone with disabilities that they aren't trying hard enough, please.

If vaping is so difficult then surely you should consider quitting? Why should the environment pay for your nasty addiction?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/07/2023 20:17

You're being disingenous, Getinthebin, Do you honestly think that big tobacco/pharma will give you the inside scoop on their marketing strategy? Open your eyes.

I don't give a hoot if the alternative is a horrid tasting spray/lozenge or patch. They're functional, not for pleasure. I don't want this product anywhere near children, not mine or anyone else's.

Hellocatshome, I know you weren't asking me but I know the answer to this. Disposable vapes go in with small domestic appliances, it's not possible to remove the batteries as they're sealed. Rechargeable units are slightly different - the battery is removable so that goes in with household portable batteries - and the unit goes in with the small appliances as before.

There are no treatment/recycling facilities in the UK, all batteries (except lead acid) are processed in European plants.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/07/2023 20:18

Oh yes, Hellocatshome Vape shops must take them back but most people don't drop them off there for whatever reason? Many people buy online and wouldn't go to these shops.

I've been in loads of vape shops. I have never once seen a kid in there buying vapes or being encouraged to buy vapes.

When I buy mine online, I have to send a picture of my driving licence to set up an account before they'll send them.

Kids were buying cigarettes when I was young. It's not the marketing. It's because nicotine is addictive.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 15/07/2023 20:19

I’d like to see cigarettes prescription only. But I know it’s never going to happen.

Ylvamoon · 15/07/2023 20:20

bonfirebash · 15/07/2023 20:09

95% safer than smoking was the last study
There was a massive thread on it recently
@PencilsInSpace is the one you want for proper breakdown of smoking v vapes
Flavours have been about for years, I was vaping a flavour in 2013 but the disposable ones have made them a lot easier to access

But I smoked at 12, if I could have accessed a vape I would and it would have been better for me

We don't really know how safe they are.

All I know is, that they contain glycerin and artificial flavours.

The former is a highly poisonous substance and the latter we are trying to eliminate from our foods.

No far from it. I’m a very proactive and attentive parent.

My daughter has never smoked a cigarette and doesn’t drink to access. She has had a shit 3 years and wanted to fit in. They are so easy to get hold of and she’s now addicted and in charge of her own money.

It could happen to anyone. Even your child.

Absolutely. So many judgy parents. A parent of an adult as well.Blush

People's douche flutes are clearly more important than the environment or children. Who knew?

Well luckily, it's not about what you give a hoot about. I'm going to stick to having my nice flavours. Horrid spray sounds vile.

Annaishere · 15/07/2023 20:21

I just want to say about the flavours that I buy them to not taste, and that they don’t really taste of much other than chemicals. I use blue slush because it doesn’t give me an allergic type reaction to it

blahblahblah1654 · 15/07/2023 20:22

@MrsTerryPratchett douche flutes! Grin

user1496146479 · 15/07/2023 20:23

All of them should be banned! The equivalent of dummy's for stupid adults going around with it stuck in their mouths all the time!
Hmm

It must be. But there is a planned ban on the disposables so I hope you find a solution since you must have your 'nice flavours'.

I'm really not having a pop at you, I was a smoker myself for a long time and I luckily had an easy time of it quitting; I know it's not like that for everybody. I have no issue with adults vaping but this product has been put on the market without a proper 'exit route' at end of use and it's readily available to children who are buying goodness knows what from wherever. That is terrifying to many people including me.

tallcypowder · 15/07/2023 20:26

I absolutely hate them but this is my worry. I absolutely agree with this.

Deputy chief executive Hazel Cheeseman said: "ASH is sympathetic to calls by the LGA and others to ban single-use disposable e-cigarettes but the risk of unintended consequences is too great for us to support a ban.
"Children already find it easy to get hold of illegal vapes as those selling them have no qualms selling to children. Making them all illegal won't help. The sale of illegal disposable vapes, already large and growing, will be turbo-charged if they are banned."

They definitely shouldn't be being sold to children, I agree with that.

Killingmytime · 15/07/2023 20:26

No they shouldn’t be banned. Shops hat are selling to underage kids should be investigated the same as cigarettes and alcohol.
If parents cant
stop
they young kids using them then that’s a parent problem.

Prescription only is a good idea.

As long as they pay for it themselves privately!

Confusion101 · 15/07/2023 20:30

I actually agree with the prescription only idea, although I'm not entirely sure about their use to give up cigarettes. If you use them and wean off them, great, but replacing cigarettes with a vape really isn't the big win people think it is!

There are very disadvantaged parts of Ireland where parents are buying the disposable "nice flavoured" ones for their kids over sweets because they last longer than sweets so more cost effective for the parent.

Absolutely all of this.
