To think they shouldn't ban vapes?

I've just heard on the news that there is talk of banning vapes.

Vaping successfully got me and thousands of others off the cigarettes when all else failed. They're safer, cheaper, less offensive.

They say the fruity flavours entice children, well so do alcoholic drinks like WKD, fruit ciders etc. You don't see any bans on alcohol coming into play. Alcohol is a far more problematic 'vice' than vaping.

Adult vapers are not responsible for somebody else's child deciding to vape any more than a parent having a glass of wine of an evening is encouraging children to drink.

Why can't we move towards mass recycling them as opposed to an outright ban? I would happily recycle every one I use. Many would. Gladly. It's not just about the environmental issue though is it?

What happened to banning cigarettes? That never came to fruition did it, perhaps they should start there.

Try the smok ones with pods. They don’t leak or need coils replaced, just tillable pods. The drawback is they don’t last long, one to three months and the batteries gone. But they’re only £25 or so and taste alot better than disposables

Smoks are good, that’s the one I use but my batteries last way longer than 3 months - not sure how you’re using yours that they only last 3 months??

Yeah I’m not sure, the last one only lasted a month so I’m thinking it could be that I’m not plugging it into a usb outlet but an old phone charger. Also was letting it hang from the plug socket and have stopped doing that with my new one

Ah yes, just as safe as cigarettes were advertised as when they first came out? YABU! We have a serious vaping issue in our school (I'm a teacher). They are too easy to access, too easy to take a quick puff and put them away, which makes them really hard to monitor on school grounds, especially the disposable ones.

Nobody knows the effects they are going to have but come back to me in 20 years time and I guarantee this generations teens will have a whole host of health problems resulting from vaping.

Oliotya · 15/07/2023 19:46

100% need banning. My toddlers are constantly finding them at the park. They're discarded all over the place. Nasty things. Unbelievably wastful and very unpleasant walking through the clouds of artificially scented "smoke".

This. There's 12yo vapers at my DD's school. Tell me they aren't an experiment.

I disagree, I think they should be on prescription for people who need them to give up cigarettes.

100% this

bakewellbride · 15/07/2023 19:58

The language on this thread shows how vaping lulls people into a false sense of security which is dangerous in itself. 'Safer'? No, we don't know enough about the safety of them to say that. 'Less unhealthy' than smoking, 'less dangerous' would be more accurate, there's just no way inhaling that crap can be good for you.

Catspyjamas17 · 15/07/2023 19:58

Disposable vapes should be banned straight away, no question.

Other vapes should only be available in the pharmacy as a stopping smoking aid, like nicotine gum etc.

They're not an experiment.

Retailers shouldn't be selling to children. That's what the issue is. There isn't a global conspiracy to get children using vapes.

Adults like nice flavours. That's why they don't come unflavoured.

Plus, if something is lemon flavoured or scented (for example), it usually has yellow packaging. I don't see kids trying to buy household wipes just because it has colourful packaging.

My 18 year old has a job and her own money and has done for quite some time. She pays for everything on her phone. What do you suggest I do?

Parent her?
It doesn't stop at 18 does it? Would you have the same approach to cocaine? Alcohol? Diazepam?

R3dSh035 · 15/07/2023 20:02

😂😂😂

How?

Catspyjamas17 · 15/07/2023 20:03

It seems like every few years someone comes up with stupidly wasteful products that take us further away from not having mountains of landfill and slowing down climate change. And wasting lithium which I thought was scarce, for bloody disposable vape batteries is ridiculous.

ZenNudist · 15/07/2023 20:05

Fully support ban on disposable vapes and tighter controls on teens getting hold of the refillable kind.

blahblahblah1654 · 15/07/2023 20:05

Prescription only is a good idea.

Catspyjamas17 · 15/07/2023 20:06

If you've smoked cigarettes for years, which taste of tobacco, why do you need a vape with a stupid wanky sweet flavour?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/07/2023 20:06

That's just defensive nonsense.

Vapes are most definitely being marketed to children. It's a cynical ploy by the industry needing to hook in the next generation of 'smokers'. Now that cigarettes are so expensive and the customers die off, from smoking or old age or whatever, they need replacements.

Adults who want to stop smoking do not need sparkles and fruity flavours to give up smoking, they need a reliable product that gets them off cigarettes. When I was giving up smoking there were Nicorette patches or lozenges or a horrid spray. None of them were sparkly, they were functional with the objective of weaning the user off smoking and off these products. I don't know anybody who carried on with them because although they were effective, they were not pleasurable.

Disposable vapes need to be banned and the industry properly regulated. I'm worried for the young children that I see vaping. Even junior schools are calling for used vape collections. That's horrendous.

That’s unfair. There has to come a time where you can’t control everything

GetInTheBinThenGetInTheSea · 15/07/2023 19:22

There's a time and a place for disposables, definitely. I wouldn't go to a festival or big event and take a reusable vape. Too much hassle and risk of losing it, or it can run out of battery, it can leak, it can get broken, it constantly needs filling back up, it takes up a lot of space if you're taking cables, power banks, spare juice, and coils/pods etc.

Not to mention that some of us have physical health issues and can't necessarily be doing that stuff, especially on the go.

I chuck a disposable in my pocket and a spare in my bag. I don't see the issue as long as I'm not throwing them in the bin.

How do you recycle them out of interest.

ShallowHallow · 15/07/2023 20:08

My 17y and 19y olds thankfully
despise vaping and find the kids that do it at their school pretty ‘try-hard’. But they are clearly appealing to some teens.

I agree they should be banned. What an environmental mistake to invent them.

But also, what a shame people are so cavalier with litter. It wouldn’t be quite so bad if people disposed of the damn things properly.

95% safer than smoking was the last study
There was a massive thread on it recently
@PencilsInSpace is the one you want for proper breakdown of smoking v vapes
Flavours have been about for years, I was vaping a flavour in 2013 but the disposable ones have made them a lot easier to access

But I smoked at 12, if I could have accessed a vape I would and it would have been better for me

I'm sure everyone who vapes would be delighted to have them replaced with a "horrid spray".

Where are vapes being marketed at all? I don't recall seeing any advertising for them, let alone aimed at children. If you have an example, I'd love to see it.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 15/07/2023 20:11

Yes @Vapes1 there are loads of dodgy corner shops in London that knowingly sell vapes to kids in school uniform. Plus even vape shops that do. My teens know the exact ones that sell to clearly underage people. That's also not considering the adults who will go and buy for 13 Yr olds when asked outside the shops to do that for them, without a thought to if they should.

E-cigs have helped wean addicted smokers off tobacco but disposable vapes have become an epidemic of addiction for young kids with malleable brains and the huge health impacts are becoming extremely clear.

But your need for nicotine obviously trumps a whole generation's need for protection from addictive substances. FFS.

Prescription only would cut out 90% of this. It's a fucking simple solution. Plus cutting out the flavours aimed at tweens.

OhSmitty · 15/07/2023 20:11

I agree with scrapping disposable Vapes. I vaped to quit decades of smoking, it took a couple of years of vaping but I'm now smoke and vape free for 3 yrs. They are marvellous inventions. I don't miss smoking or vaping.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 15/07/2023 20:12

Of course the disposable ones should be banned. They create so much waste and so much litter. And they are doing so much harm to children.

I think that the reusable ones should be available on prescription for people who need them to help manage their addiction. They should not be available over the counter. And there really is no need for anyone to have disposable ones, they are terrible for the environment... saying that they can be recycled is missing the point, there is no need for that much waste in the first place.
