To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

My husband and daughters are going. We did the whole preorder codes, three laptops and battling for good tickets stuff because my daughters (and DH) are really big fans. Taylor songs are always on in our house and my daughters have been discussing what they'll be wearing too. And why not? Why is making something fun something to be sneered at? I would have gone to the same effort for Queen if it had been a similar thing back then.

I'm not sneering. I was asking a question which has now been answered. I didn't understand the hype around her as an individual and the madness ticket process. Not sneering!

Not sneering!

Your comment about people picking outfits already was sneering. At least own it and take some responsibility rather than trying to backtrack.

So if you don't like something and vocalise that, you're bringing people down?

Noted.

Oh I seeee bad faith takes are the thing you’re passionate about! Have fun OP.

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 15/07/2023 16:31

Yes she uses other producers and songwriters at times, partly because she likes to experiment with different sounds and types of production. But the majority of the song writing is her. There's a unmistakable stamp on all of her songs of her lyricism and intelligence.

@SayHi you are definitely wrong about the phonecall. The actual lyrics as they appear on the song aren't discussed at any time. The sex part comes up (not worded the same), but you can tell she's very very uncomfortable with it all even though she doesn't say so, probably because she doesn't want to give him any more ammunition. She's also uncomfortable with the 'he made her famous' part and kinda says she was already well known but he made her more so, or words to that affect. He definitely doesn't say he's gonna call her a bitch.

It was widely acknowledged when the full footage came out that she hadn't told any lies and the crux of the matter is that those two assholes tried to ruin her career.

Do I believe Taylor can sing as well as Freddie Mercury? No.
Do I personally prefer her voice to Adele, Ariana, Beyonce? 1000%.

I actually have a decent voice but find Taylor's songs so hard to sing because she's an alto.

Do I think she can write songs as well as Freddie Mercury? 10,000% and for me she's actually better because her lyrics are so clever and resonate to my life. As much as bohemian rhapsody is a great song, I'm still not sure what it means.

My dad died from covid and on his anniversary I created a video/photo montage of memories with various appropriate songs in the background. The one track that stands out for everyone who watches it is the TS song Marjorie, written about her late grandmother. She even samples her grandmother on the song (she was an opera singer). It's stunning. And so simple.

Another track which is so gorgeous is Bigger Than the Whole Sky, which is heavily suspected to be about miscarriage. I've had 2 miscarriages and that song just encapsulates that feeling so strongly.

She has sooooo many beautiful songs I couldn't even start to list them all. But her singles rarely fully portray her gift. She's really special. Honestly.

@SistersNotCisters

My oldest DD who is 15 has been talking about and waiting for this tour for a good couple of years. She stayed up until 6.15am watching a live stream of the first American show.

It means so much to her to go and I am excited to see her so excited...means I am also quite looking forward to it now.

She is outfit planning and friendship bracelet planning already (hoping it will slow down a bit for a few months)

TheaBrandt · 15/07/2023 16:35

Agree with every word Never. Listen to “Soon you’ll get better” when you have an ill parent and try not be moved. Impossible.

Itwasrare · 15/07/2023 16:37

I was about to reply OP and say I was taken to task earlier for not being a real fan for not seeing the hype either but I see this thread has also been infiltrated too 😂
I don't get it at all. I am actually a fan, not quite as much as my teenage daughter but definitely a fan. I have seen her before and I particularly love her recent music. I am going to go this time and willing to pay for the privilege. But this level of hype makes no sense. She is a talented musician but there are many other talented musicians too. Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay have done massive stadium tours without nearly so much fuss and codes etc. But nobody else seems to inspire such devotion in suburban white women for some reason!

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 15/07/2023 16:38

@StopBeingASquare have you listened to any of the suggested songs? You might even be too young to appreciate the two I've mentioned as I certainly didn't appreciate how horrible miscarriage is until I'd been through it myself.

A pp said her songs were teenage angsty... Well yes, she wrote a lot of them when she WAS a teenager... She also has some very adult songs too (like I mentioned above). Admittedly some of her recent songs have looked back at her past, but always from an adult perspective.

I’ve already said earlier, but I honestly think a lot of the hype for this tour is because of her not having toured here since reputation, then add in newer fans from the recent albums.

Then add in a bit of hype about the actual show being all over social media... and what happened with the USA ticket sales.

and huge demand.

Not that I’m not a fan, I went to get last 2 U.K. tours and had tickets for the cancelled one, but I don’t think it’d be as bad if she’d toured every album as normal.

tigger1001 · 15/07/2023 16:46

Taylor swift isn't my cup of tea, but have heard that her shows are really good.

We all have differing tastes and that's ok.

I do think though that her pr team have done an outstanding job and have created a frenzy for the tickets with people willing to fly all over just to get a ticket and have some friends who are not only now flying abroad but paid for a vip package as to not disappoint their teen.

Itwasrare · 15/07/2023 16:56

@tabulahrasa I agree with what you are saying but many artists didn't tour for a while, Coldplay being one, and they are famed for putting on amazing shows. They are circling back to many regions twice as the demand is so great. Nevertheless, there was a lot less hype and faff around the process!

DojaPhat · 15/07/2023 17:04

If you'd written this thread about Beyonce, Cardi B or Meg Thee Stallion, you wouldn't have needed to add the preamble about having your arse handed to you on a plate. Taylor represents a lot more than just a pretty singer to many, many people. Thank goodness success isn't predicated on talent.

Yeah, but she’s put out way more albums in that time though is more what I mean about the not touring part.

As in it’s not just that she’s not toured, it’s that there’s 4 albums worth of not touring.

And some of the hype is just - general, tickets are hard to get, must try and get some type hype as well, obviously.

The extra faff is because the ticket sales went so badly wrong in America.

But, tbh, I think it should have just been a case of album pre-sales and make it so tickets resold on sites where you can put the price up will be cancelled and it would have worked much better.

Baisksomwms · 15/07/2023 17:47

I thought the hype was because of massive faff?
Pre-sales, lottery etc. It's so hard to buy tickets these days
I love gigs but simply cannot be ducking arsed. Especially with so many other things to do.

Then you never get through or find out all the affordable ones are sold out anyways, only to mysteriously appear for sale elsewhere at 3x the price.

So done with all this BS

Taylorswiftly23 · 15/07/2023 17:47

She was selling out stadium tours 10 years ago. Her popularity has endured. Some of these posts make it sound as if she released her first album last year.

Bubblyb00b · 15/07/2023 18:20

hahahaa I must be a real dinosaur but I would not be able to name any of Taylor Swift's songs or recognise her voice )))

User1864876 · 15/07/2023 18:35

I'm also a dinosaur who doesn't know anything by her or even what she sounds like but I don't have any young people in the house so it wouldn't be what I listen to anyway. I may have heard her on Radio 2 if she is ever on there but I wouldn't know. I also don't know anything by Ed Sheeran either. I think if you have teens and older children at home you get to hear much more modern music like TS as they listen to it.

It’s funny (or not) how determined people are to treat a slight, pretty young woman as a novice; she is anything but. Love her or hate her, she is formidable.

There were loads of empty seats at reputation at the Wembley show I attended. It definitely wasn’t sold out. I think she’s just great, not putting her down, just trying to understand/discuss why it’s all gone so bonkers this time!

@User10486743 this is not the case for everyone. I am not someone who is interested in reliving my uni days at blur or whatever. It feels a bit stale to me, maybe fun with mates and a few drinks but generally I enjoy current music more. my younger kids tend to like bands and artists because I play and encourage it and like to take them to concerts - although my teen is big into TS!

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 19:18

It's a shame when seats are left empty, sometimes near the front, especially for hard to get ones. I'm sure it's caused by places like Viagogo hogging the tickets and then not selling them because the price is too high.

Yep I think the development of those sites has had a huge impact. Both Red and 1989 were pretty much capacity as far as I can remember.

I went to Manchester, it sold out, she added an extra date afterwards.

I’d got tickets for the first one, but terrible ones, got better ones for the second, tried to sell the first ones for face value and they didn’t sell.

So I kind of assume with a lot of sold out concerts, it’s actually resellers buying them tbh.

As in neither night was particularly empty (well I wasn’t wasting the tickets, lol) but I bet if actual people wanting to go had been the only buyers there’d have been no second night.

GrapeHyacinth · 15/07/2023 19:25

I don't really get it but I'm in my 50s and dd 19 loves her and was delighted to get tickets, so I'm pleased for her

WomblingTree86 · 15/07/2023 19:44

I think she is very popular because she is a very prolific songwriter and the type of song is quite varied. The singles tend to be more pop but there are a lot of folk and country songs on the albums some of which are very good. Unlike most artistes who might have only a couple of good tracks on their albums which have already been released as singles, her album tracks are often better.

purpleros · 15/07/2023 19:50

I think she's a brilliant poet too. Bob Dylan won the nobel prize for literature and I'm sure Taylor won't because she's not
considered a heavyweight, despite writing beautiful music with phenomenal perceptive lyrics since her teens.
