To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

I think she's a brilliant poet too. Bob Dylan won the nobel prize for literature and I'm sure Taylor won't because she's not
considered a heavyweight, despite writing beautiful music with phenomenal perceptive lyrics since her teens.

Yes, I think it is the lyric writing that makes her stand out, particularly as she has written so much.

Jigslaw · 15/07/2023 20:07

But nobody else seems to inspire such devotion in suburban white women for some reason!

I mean I'm not white and I'm not devoted to her, but she's been releasing music for 17 years, she writes about her feelings and what she's experiencing which not only resonates when people listen back ie a teen now listening to speak now, but also with the people who have grown up listening to her. She also used to do a tonne for her fans (not sure if she still does to the same extent) and I guess that inspires loyalty in some.

Thing with her eras tour is that it's a show, it's a spectacle and I suspect plenty who aren't exactly really really into her music want to see and experience it.

I'd never heard of her until I saw threads on here. I guess if people like her enough they are going to make an effort to get tickets.

New level for MN. Never heard of Taylor Swift 😂

Suzi89 · 15/07/2023 20:12

She comes from money, her Dad pretty much brought the first label she was signed to (owned 90% of it) so she’s had a very easy ride.

On TikTok her current tour is shown a lot and I find her boring on tour, she can’t really sing live well or dance, as opposed to Beyoncé whose tour videos I can’t stop watching on TikTok and blow me away.

purpleros · 15/07/2023 20:12

the comments about suburban white women loving her made me think of a night out recently where three of my black
colleagues were openly disparaging of Taylor and one even called her a basic white girl.
I wish I was as basic as her Grin

CornishGem1975 · 15/07/2023 20:12

I’ve already said earlier, but I honestly think a lot of the hype for this tour is because of her not having toured here since reputation, then add in newer fans from the recent albums.

She has a a LOT of new fans since the pandemic when she released Folklore and Evermore, people who never listened to her before. Hence known as the pandemic swifties 😃whereas I am a white suburban woman who has been listening since 2007.

Yes, it's worth remembering that the tour she is on is a celebration of her entire back catalogue - it's rare for artists in their prime to do this, their tours are usually heavily focused on one record, so I think this particular idea for a tour has garnered a lot of attention and interest.

I'd much rather see Rammstein and have my eyebrows burnt off.

Best comment 😁 I saw them for the 4th & 5th time last month and it was as amazing as ever!

But she is a very limited vocalist, can’t dance, doesn’t have great stage presence. I like some of her songs but don’t understand the obsession with her tour.

I remember the 80s when barriers between black and white music were coming down constantly, and how vibrant and dynamic music was as a result.
sad we seem to be going backwards.

She is fine as a vocalist and dancer. If I think her fans are more interested in hearing the actual songs and don't need her to be the best singer or dancer anyway.

Jigslaw · 15/07/2023 20:45

Plenty of children and adults with rich parents and connections try to make it big, few do. Regardless of whether she had doors opened for her at the start it's ridiculous to say she's had a very easy ride, it still takes a huge amount of work to gain the level of success she has and to sustain it.

I was teased throughout school and people still make comments because I am black but like a lot of white artists' stuff. There does seem to be bigger divides forming in recent years which is sad. People still making tonnes of comments comparing Beyonce and Taylor and bringing other artists like Lizzo into it- boring.

I agree.

But careful, you'll be accused of not having any passion in life if you say this Grin apparently you can't say this unless you have seen her live, in person too!

I've listened to a few of the songs mentioned all on here. I agree she is a fantastic lyricist if she wrote those herself. Her voice sounds lovely on the songs.

I still don't think she sounds amazing live though. She I agree she can't dance. But if you have a good enough voice / stage presence I guess that shouldn't matter. But it helps.

I think it's that lots are really keen to say she's shit instead of just saying I don't like her stuff. I mean I'm not a fan of beyonces music, but I can still appreciate she's a very talented performer and understand why she has so many fans.

I just can't abide Pink but l really like TS. Same as no doubt you love some foods/movies/clothes that others hate and vice versa. It's called personal taste. Do you really need to ask?

Her Dad BROUGHT a record label. She’s in the top 1% from birth. And plenty with rich parents DO make it (Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Lana Del Ray, Lady GaGa). It does make your chances of success 1000x higher. She’s a limited vocalist. I’m sure she can write lyrics but she cowrites most of her songs and has the best producers.

RocketPanda · 15/07/2023 20:56

DD has ASD and Taylor Swift is one of her obsessions so she plays her albums constantly and could easily andwer any question about her. She can't go to any of her concerts so I don't have the ticket fever in my house.
Her lyrics are beautifully written. I wouldn't call myself a big fan but having listened to all her songs ( on repeat for years) her grasp of creating images and feelings and memories is rare.

He bought (not brought) a 3% stake in a record label she was already signed to. She doesn't claim she didn't have a headstart or that she grew up in poverty and lifted herself out with no support, but she's still worked ridiculously hard to get where she is. She has written or co-written every single one of her songs, which is an unusual feat. Again it's fine if you dislike her it's the way people try to go out of their way to prove how she has no talent or whatever.

Why are you so determined to hate on her? Yes she came from money, which definitely would be an advantage but her incredible talent is what has sustained and increased her popularity to make her the biggest artist in the world right now. The songs she WRITES (yes others contribute but it's mostly Taylor) speak to so many people. Her back catalogue is huge and varied. She's incredibly smart and articulate.

You should honestly read some of the comments/articles that people who have actually worked with her have said. One of the best songs on 1989 is Clean, which she wrote with Imogen Heap who then blogged about it.

She's not a powerhouse vocalist but to me, her voice is stunning. I also like that she doesn't have an overly sexualised image, unlike so many female performers. I said on another thread that yes, she sings about sex at times but not in a vulgar way, which again has become a thing with many artists.

There were earlier comments on her appearance, how she naturally pretty. Again this is something I totally respect about her. So many women now are fillered to within an inch of their lives, everyone looks the same, while Taylor is in the corner looking utterly gorgeous and unique. She doesn't have talon nails because being able to play guitar is more important to her.

I was coming on to agree with you OP - I don’t understand the hype either. The only song of hers I can think of is Shake it Off.

Having read the thread though, I’ve learnt a lot.

But … no-one expects Ed Sheeran to dance, or criticises him for not! And clearly she does have amazing stage presence.

It’s clearly not about people liking different things.

It’s why the HUGE HYPE?

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 21:18

I don't understand why there has to be codes and waitlists, with every other artist the tickets go on sale at a particular time and you either get one or you don't so the same outcome but a lot less palaver.

Odiebay · 15/07/2023 21:19

She has already said that her voice is just a means of getting her lyrics out and that she's not a belter but can hold a note. She said if she didn't write her own songs she wouldn't sing.

Watch her miss Americana doc. I can see why people like her.

Also the way she turned around the whole Kim/Kanye thing.. used it and made reputation. That is a real power move and a great lesson to young girls especially.

The way she handled her sexual assault case was great too.

You could also see her "making of a song" videos on YouTube. You can hear/see her write her own songs. She is also very generous with writing credits. Many collaborators have said so.

I’ve seen Ed sheeran play a stadium, it’s literally him and his guitar and loop pedal, with some graphics on a screen.

I mean I enjoyed it because I quite like him, but it’s pretty basic.
