To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

@Jongleterre when I was growing up i hated everything mainstream. I thought Morrissey's disdain for popularism was the coolest thing ever. I didn't think you could like The Smiths and George Michael and so I made my choices. But as a middle aged woman (who still loves The Smiths) I see that Morrissey is an insufferable prick and that George Michael was not only incredibly talented but a kind and lovely human being. I kick myself for a sense of superiority over people who just liked something different.

Music snobbery is tiresome.

This absolutely nails it. In my 20s I was deep into the most obscure, alternative stuff I could find and I even used to write for one of the more pretentious music rags. I loathed 'pop' and held anything that I viewed as commercial or mainstream in complete disdain.

I was entirely wrong. I am now in my 50s and rediscovering the utterly life-affirming joy of good-quality pop music. I ADORE Harry Styles (hence username) and I am developing a taste for Taylor Swift. I think both of them are extremely talented and deserve the hype. Yes, there's still plenty of crap music out there to be dismissive of, but Taylor Swift ain't it.

And my 20-year-old Sonic Youth-obsessed ds also seriously rates Harry Styles (Taylor not so much tbh but hey ho).

It was edited, the full video shows that it wasn’t that she was responding to.

Kanye and kim edited it to make it look like she’d heard it.

It was very widely reported when the full video came out, in fairly surprised you’d know the first bit and not that tbh.

It’s crazy that you’ll believe her over actual evidence.

You can literally hear her speaking and discussing the song and the parts she likes and other things to do etc.

There was no editing and the full video shows that she’s a liar and it’s one of the many times she’s been called out being fake but people like you won’t hear of it.

Covetthee · 15/07/2023 15:24

I feel that way about Beyonce.

Really don’t get the fuss and everyone fawning at over ‘Queen B’🙄 people give her far too much credit.

if everyone liked the same artists it would be boring though.

I’d rather my daughter want to go see someone like taylor though than Cardi B or something

I do find this element of the Taylor Swift fandom interesting. Her music is so mum and dad approved. Previously that would have been the kiss of death to a young artist.

Of course. But I've never seen so much utter hysteria over a pop singer, which made me ask the question.

Ahh then you obviously weren't around for Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Elvis, The Beatles and many others. I haven't been to 'a gig' for many years now but hysteria over pop stars is certainly not a new phenomenon.

No I wasn't around. I'm in my 20s.

@SayHi There is no recording about the bitch part. You’re wrong if you are saying there is.

My daughter is ND, no ‘stigma’ from me. I just know the bitch part wasn’t caught on a recording. According to Taylor she didn’t approve being called a bitch. The recording definitely didn’t include it.

Yes that’s how she spun it.

She initially said it was about the look alike and then she was caught on camera saying what a great idea it was after he asked her permission.

Then she changed it to it’s because she didn’t know he was going to say the word bitch - even though it’s caught on camera that he’s playing her the song and saying the exact words and she’s laughing saying something like omg that’s so funny because everyone says it’s you that made me famous and he said yes that’s why he wants her as part of the song.

Her image is about her being a good girl (even though some of her lyrics are shocking) and she was worried that this song would hurt that image and her brand.

Blinky21 · 15/07/2023 15:30

I'm not a massive fan but looking forward to seeing her with my partner, who is a big fan. I don't care if you like her or not, why would I? But the hype is because millions of people do like her, it's not rocket science...! I would never want to Ed Sheeran but I don't question why others like him

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 15:30

PinkyFlamingo · 15/07/2023 15:18

But why do you have to understand the hype? Surely music is like everything else in life, everyone likes different things?

Because I'm nosy and I want to?

Pink is all of those things as well - she plays piano during her sets, she dances, does aerial silks, writes her songs, sings…

I stand corrected!

I have just never liked her music but appreciate she must be talented.

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 15:32

@SayHi can you link to the recording where Taylor approves being called a bitch in the Kanye song? I don’t think you can.

She knew about the line about sex with her. That was in the recording. But the calling her a bitch?

I cant stand her! She seems utterly miserable and not that great of a singer

Clarista · 15/07/2023 15:34

It’s a perfectly fine question to ask OP, since it’s a massively hyped tour that resulted in Ticketmaster going to court. From the outside people are always going to question it, and I get that even as a fan.

The reason you get such emotional responses is because people who don’t ‘get’ Taylor see her as a blonde bubblegum pop princess and decide she is awful and talentless despite not knowing her music. This is turn pisses off the fans who know she writes her own music and is exceptionally talented, so they clap back. The truth is that she’s popular because she’s currently the best song writer out there, can create quiet introspective poetry, yet she also knows how to throw out a banger and get the radio hits.

If you’re interested in checking out her lyrics I’d suggest the following songs:

All Too Well
The Archer
Peace
Would've Could’ve Should’ve
Maroon
Dear John
Last Kiss

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 15:34

This. ^ Lots of jealousy towards Taylor on here. Beautiful, talented, gifted, successful, rich etc... It's understandable, but people are embarrassing themselves with their clear and obvious irrational hatred for her.

@FadeAwayAndRadiate

The only one being irrational here is yourself. You said this thread is making you nauseous. I'm sorry that just because some people don't like Taylor swift it makes you nauseous.

I'd much rather see Rammstein and have my eyebrows burnt off.

This x 1,000,000

Im in Berlin now ready to see them tomorrow night. And I’m going to Paris next weekend to see them again 💪🏻💪🏻 Fuck Taylor Swift when you can see actual talent and decent music 🤣🤣🤣 The obsession with her on here is mental.

HIER KOMMT DIE SONNE 🔥🔥🔥

Is there nothing that you feel excited and passionate about?? You really can’t understand why fans of something/someone might seek to connect with other fans?

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 14:32

I also love Coldplay

Me too. I like Taylor, Ed and Coldplay....is there no hope for me? It’s me, hi, I’m the problem it’s me. 🙋🏻‍♀️😂

HA! Love that song! I have Coldplay on my Spotify - along with TS/Pink/Gaga - no Ed though

For all the music snobs I also have The Transplants, Hole, FF, The Cranberries, Mary Black, Bob Dylan, Crowded House, the album from Oh Brother Where Art Thou and Dave!

It’s also weird because her songs are not all child friendly.

Her early stuff, sure, but not after that.

I'll listen to those as well as the other 2 suggested below by PP.

OP - As a recently converted 50 year old Swiftie, let me try and explain.

For Taylor - it is all about the lyrics. Forget her voice. There are better singers and better stage performers (though she is amazing live).

But what she does better than anyone, is capture a feeling. Capture a moment. Paint a picture. Her song ‘Fifteen’ captures what it feels like to be 15. ‘The Best Day’ captures what it’s like to be 13 and have your mum as your only friend.

Her best lyrics are so insightful. They capture feelings that feel very personal, but at the same time others can relate to.

She is also an amazing role model for resilience. Her song ‘Blank Space’ was written as she got all this press criticism portraying her as some sort of insane man eater. So she writes a song imagining what it would be like to be that person. Just brilliant.

Folklore is the best album. At first I found it samey, but then I found myself becoming obsessed with each song in turn.

And she also has the fun stuff - Style - Wildest Dreams - just brilliant

Flammkuchen · 15/07/2023 15:37

The other amazing thing about Taylor is different people give different favourite songs. They are rarely the no. 1 hits but the album tracks. There is so much depth in her work.

Well yes there is. Of course there is. What a ridiculous comment.

Just because I don't like TS I don't have any joys or get any passion out of life.

She writes her own songs.

It’s not just her producers etc that say so, every artist she’s collaborated with say so, even John Mayer who would absolutely say if she didn’t given he’s complained publicly about the song she wrote about him.

I plucked out one album of hers (first one I came across while scrolling Grammy Awards)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evermore_(Taylor_Swift_album)#Track_listing

She had five songwriters with her on that album, and only one song out of fifteen she wrote herself ("No Body no Crime").

From Freddie Mecury to Taylor Swiff, It's a shocking indictment of music today that such a derivative artist, nice pleasant girl that she is, is deemed among the best of the current acts today.

She is quite simply the music industry right now. The biggest artist in the world by far. She’s an extremely talented songwriting and doesn’t have a voice for singing high notes but has a stunning alto voice. She also comes across as a very nice person and cares about her fans very much!

aSofaNearYou · 15/07/2023 15:37

@SquashPenguin Rammstein is just noise to me, and I find the people who are into music that sounds like "just noise" are generally the most snobbish about other genres.

I don't have any trouble respecting that others enjoy their sound though!

She wrote every single track on Speak Now…
