To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

@AlwaysGinPlease

What? Did you read my OP?

I asked about the hype.. not peoples likes and dislikes.

The Imogen Heap blog. Bring familiar with her work, I totally understand why Taylor wanted her type of sound on Clean. The song is incredible.

The official website of Grammy winning multi-instrumentalist Imogen Heap.

Balls, it didn't link directly to it. You can find it there though.

toottootpipip · 15/07/2023 21:23

I don't really know what she sings beyond shake it off. But I was able to buy a pair of tickets for each of the wembley dates so I have lots of happy friends!

ferntwist · 15/07/2023 21:24

I too am mystified OP. Colleagues on staff to WhatsApp boring on about tickets and I just can’t see why it’s so special

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 21:27

The ticket buying seems a quite protracted procedure, I hope it doesn't spread to other artists.

ShallowHallow · 15/07/2023 21:28

I think she is average. But my teen daughter worships her so I made the effort to get tickets.

Lots of stuff gets hyped up that I am not interested it. I just accept we all like different stuff. I don’t do the faux-confused thing.

She is, on any scale you want to measure that, NOT average. She’s a talented beautiful megastar who can afford her own private jet. You’re average.

CookieCutter8 · 15/07/2023 21:32

I also don't understand the hype. To me personally she is very blah

GreyRooted · 15/07/2023 21:34

It could be because I’m set in my ways a bit and tend to enjoy what I know, so I don’t really listen to new music unless I’m forced to, but I honestly really don’t enjoy listening to her. We often go for a drive on a weekend and my husband and daughter listen to her in the car and it just bores me rigid. Not just her though. I seem to have a hate for songs where they’re just ‘talking to music’. Though I appreciate not all of hers are like that.

That said, my music listening choices are generally Absolute 80’s and 90’s, George Michael, Prince, and then house music from the early 90’s onwards so I’m probably not in a position to give a decent opinion!😂

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 21:35

I think I would be put off by a lot of teens at a concert waving their phones about.

Glittertwins · 15/07/2023 21:36

Wouldn't recognise her stuff, it's all generic blah to me.

TheaBrandt · 15/07/2023 21:39

Average 😀😀 too funny.

Football leaves me cold but appreciate many people are passionate about it. Horses for courses but it’s quite pathetic to actually criticise just because it’s not to your taste - particularly when you haven’t actually properly listened to her stuff.

I posted upthread to say I know one of her songs. I’m not a fan - she is neither here nor there to me.

But why say she’s ‘average’? She’s achieved more than you could in her wildest dreams. 🤷🏻‍♀️ You look silly saying that.

CrazyArmadilloLady · 15/07/2023 21:14

I was coming on to agree with you OP - I don’t understand the hype either. The only song of hers I can think of is Shake it Off.

Having read the thread though, I’ve learnt a lot.

But … no-one expects Ed Sheeran to dance, or criticises him for not! And clearly she does have amazing stage presence.

Thank you for actually reading what the people who know what they are talking about have said.

She does dance a bit fwiw. She's not amazing but definitely pulled it off for the rep tour. It's on Netflix (and very watchable, not just for fans like me (I'm in my 40s btw)). You should watch a bit and see what you think.

Reputation was her turning the lowest part of her life into something to positive. It's her darkest album but at it's core it's mostly love songs actually.

2ndMrsdeWinter · 15/07/2023 21:50

I enjoy how she slags off men in every song. I will sing loudly and wear something obnoxious because I like her and I want to take my daughter to see her live as she’s a massive, massive fan (yes, I have tickets!) Lots of musicians I don’t connect with, which is ok too because tastes vary.

PinkRiceKrispies · 15/07/2023 21:53

Once I got out of my teens, I never really fangirled any singer. Even the singers and bands I do like, there are always a few songs of there's I really dislike and I really hate going to concerts as well so its not for me. However, we are all different and if it's what makes people happy.....

WomblingTree86 · 15/07/2023 21:56

Jigslaw · 15/07/2023 20:45

She comes from money, her Dad pretty much brought the first label she was signed to (owned 90% of it) so she’s had a very easy ride.

Plenty of children and adults with rich parents and connections try to make it big, few do. Regardless of whether she had doors opened for her at the start it's ridiculous to say she's had a very easy ride, it still takes a huge amount of work to gain the level of success she has and to sustain it.

I think her father is a stockbroker so probably not someone with huge connections in the music industry.

BungleandGeorge · 15/07/2023 21:57

There’s hype because she is extremely popular and demand far outstrips supply for her concerts. It’s not too difficult to
understand. I could name many musicians/ bands/ activities/hobbies which I don’t care at all for but which other people do. I can’t imagine flying abroad for a football match but it makes some people happy which is what life is all about!

I don't understand why there has to be codes and waitlists, with every other artist the tickets go on sale at a particular time and you either get one or you don't so the same outcome but a lot less palaver.

It was to stop the bots and scalpers and let actual fans get the tickets, to the most part, it's been successful so far.

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 22:00

It probably doesn't help with tickets that if a lot of younger people go then a parent has to get a ticket as well as they can't often go on their own.

CandyLeBonBon · 15/07/2023 22:01

I understand that others enjoy her music, but I listen to her songs and struggle to understand how she's been elevated to goddess status. She's perfectly lovely, and write reasonably catchy tunes. Other than that, I don't see that she's any better than her peers. But that's the joy of artistic endeavour, isn't it? It's all subjective. I hope all whomanaged to get tickets are looking forward to seeing her, and have an amazing time. After all, that's the whole point of it, isn't it?

If you are a middle aged women you are probably not the target audience though.

CandyLeBonBon · 15/07/2023 22:13

That's quite a bold statement, bearing mind she's 33 herself

"Some 45% of avid fans are millennials, people between the ages of 27 and 42, while 23% are baby boomers, 21% are Gen Xers and just 11% are members of Gen Z" (source: Forbes)

StaunchMomma · 15/07/2023 22:15

Yeah, I don't get it either. Nor Pink, actually.

Obviously I get the different strokes for different folks thing but what has shocked me is the level of hysteria over tour tickets.

There are clearly way more TS fans out there than I realised!

Fair play to her, though. She comes across as a really down to Earth, nice person.
