To wonder why the same rules don’t apply to Tattle?

Shitegeist · 12/07/2023 21:56

Whenever any crime or scandal is discussed on mumsnet threads are shut down for libel reasons or contempt of court. But that’s all that is discussed on Tattle. Does anyone know why they aren’t subject to the same rules?

OP posts:
Florissante · 12/07/2023 21:57

Because they are different forums.

Shitegeist · 12/07/2023 21:58

Yes but contempt of court is a crime. Mumsnet don’t allow discussion of those issues because they risk legal action. Why doesn’t Tattle have the same concerns? Why isn’t it shut down?

Mumofsend · 12/07/2023 21:58

It hasn't caught up with the tattle owners yet.

IveHadItUpToHere · 12/07/2023 22:12

Tattle sails very close to the wind. It's why there is a campaign to get it shut down. It's also had to scrub threads and posts at the request of lawyers. It's a cesspit.

Elephantsdontlikechocolate · 12/07/2023 22:48

Because mumsnet is censored and only certain favoured ideas of baa baa variety are welcome.
Tattle's ethos is to call sheep behaviour things like this out.
Them's the rooolz.

Bringonthepitchforks · 12/07/2023 22:55

Is tattle hosted in the UK?

It's sailed too close to the wind with a lot of stories I'm surprised it's still running!

Flickersy · 12/07/2023 23:04

Because tattle has basically no moderation.

It may catch up with them one day or it may not, but MN plays it safer.

It’s always a good rule to discount the opinions of those who call other humans ‘sheep’

They aren’t privy to anything that could be contempt of court though are they? Speculating about a celeb court case is just that, speculation.
If someone was a celeb lawyer and went on tattle to spill the beans then they would obviously be in breech but tattle is just people gossiping and giving their own opinion. They aren’t divulging sealed evidence or state secrets.

Also MN is a totally different type of forum, the “spirit” of the site and all that - the spirit of tattle is that you can have any opinion you want as long as it is not based in a hatred for someone’s protected characteristics. (Although those comments get made and just like MN you have the ability to report and moderators work on the site)

Definitely has moderation, it may not be the type of moderation you’re thinking (like shutting down threads about specific people or subjects) but it’s definitely there when it’s evident someone is just a troll

Dabralor · 12/07/2023 23:13

Because its an absolute bin?

Don't understand tattle at all. I once called a poster up for saying that she wanted to set fire to Britain's favourite American royal and then I was formally warned for 'tone policing'. Yet a post threatening to set someone on fire was allowed to stand. It's madness.

User3253625 · 12/07/2023 23:31

Because somewhere in their T&Cs, Tattle has something covering their arse regarding user-generated content. The same as any large platform like Youtube, Reddit etc. It's also very, very difficult to sue an anonymous poster on a forum as you need to determine their identity. The only thing the website can offer is IP address and even then it would be very difficult to deduce much. If the user is outside the UK or using a VPN then it's virtually impossible to do anything.

To be honest, I think MN is keen for users to believe that they may be liable for legal repercussions as a way of self-moderating the site. This is not meant in an offensive way whatsoever, but MN is primarily used by older women who don't have a lot of experience on the technical side of websites, data etc. It's easy to gaslight users into thinking that one wrong post will get you sued when the reality of that happening is virtually zero.

Just off to Google this Tattle .... May report back .

Tattle is a lot less mainstream than MN, more of a dirty corner of the internet, which is less likely to get sued as celebs etc don’t want to afford it such regard. It’s kind of like the Pornhub of words.

SweetSakura · 12/07/2023 23:41

Mumsnet is much more risk averse than tattle essentially

Isn't that because of SWMNBN?

Springinthecity · 12/07/2023 23:45

Mumsnet is an institution- the Prime Minister comes on and discusses their favourite biscuit, any parent related issue Mumsnet is quoted in the press etc.

Tattle is not like that. It’s like The Times vs Popbitch.

JeandeServiette · 12/07/2023 23:47

Isn't that because of SWMNBN?

I wouldn't be surprised if that plays in
to it.

I had the impression that maybe the McCanns also put MN on the list of outlets that Carter Ruck chastised on their behalf.

I'm back 🖐

I'm a bit Disappointed with tattle ...seemed a bit boring .

Much more fun here... there was a mention of MN over there though 😁

Kingsparkle · 12/07/2023 23:53

I started a thread recently about sites like Tattle and why people post on them and was surprised at people willing to defend it as a source of good. It’s really nasty and I am surprised it’s been allowed to stand this long.

Calliecaterpillar · 13/07/2023 02:50

Tattle is like the true crime theory discussion forums really - only they'll investigate from armchairs on celebs and news stories that aren't a murder mystery type thing

People say stuff about characters that are connected to true crime stories all the time that could be defamatory but nobody really worries about that- bc it could also help solve a case. At least that's what people who use them hope I think

I'm guessing tattle users probably think they can solve some problem by discussing it

MN is a discussion site that doesn't really fall under conspiracy theorists corner of the internet- so likely it's taken more seriously by lawyers who work on defamation cases as it's probably perceived to have more of an influence over the general population

Gingerkittykat · 13/07/2023 04:27

The Lucy Letby threads definitely seem to break the rules on speculating on the verdict of a court case.

I wonder if people can sue the site itself rather than individual users. Then I think of Kiwi Farms which is a lot nastier and they got taken down for a couple of days and are back up again.

tornwithtattle · 13/07/2023 04:38

Tattle isn’t exactly a cesspit tbh although there are times I find it too much and have to step back - this is one of those times.

Tattle attacks people on the outside. They won’t countenance LL might be innocent and I find those threads really uncomfortable reading because of the absolute glee that drips through some of the posts, I just don’t like it. But it isn’t in the ethos of the site to say that, it just isn’t. However, all
credit to them when I’ve put an alternative view forward they have been respectful.

Likewise threads about influencers, celebs etc - you know sometimes I don’t mind. There are some who are dodgy AF, but other times when it’s just raking over the coals to criticise someone’s parenting or appearance it makes me wince a bit.

But I’ll say this for them, they don’t have the same nitpicking spite that you find here, which also starts to get to me sometimes. Tattle are savage about celebs but supportive of one another. Start a thread here about a celeb (I never have personally) and likely you’ll get ripped to shreds!

I also like the fact you can post spoilers but hide them on TV threads.
