To wonder why the same rules don’t apply to Tattle?

Whenever any crime or scandal is discussed on mumsnet threads are shut down for libel reasons or contempt of court. But that’s all that is discussed on Tattle. Does anyone know why they aren’t subject to the same rules?

I like tattle. I don't read the celeb threads but there are some really good ones in the off topic section which have facts and figures eg. In them.

Because somewhere in their T&Cs, Tattle has something covering their arse regarding user-generated content. The same as any large platform like Youtube, Reddit etc. It's also very, very difficult to sue an anonymous poster on a forum as you need to determine their identity. The only thing the website can offer is IP address and even then it would be very difficult to deduce much. If the user is outside the UK or using a VPN then it's virtually impossible to do anything.

To be honest, I think MN is keen for users to believe that they may be liable for legal repercussions as a way of self-moderating the site. This is not meant in an offensive way whatsoever, but MN is primarily used by older women who don't have a lot of experience on the technical side of websites, data etc. It's easy to gaslight users into thinking that one wrong post will get you sued when the reality of that happening is virtually zero.

You are perhaps too young to remember the Gina Ford kerfuffle

ArcticSkewer · 13/07/2023 06:28

Someone else has gone after the individual ip addresses as well at some point, can't remember who though

ArcticSkewer · 13/07/2023 06:37

Oh and there was that intern who leaked the ip addresses of mumsnet Terfy types to twitter. Also delightful.

Oh and their names and addresses ... so make sure those are fake, guys, if you insist on posting defamatory comments.

Tattle is a horrible place. There’s a thread on there about one of my friends and the stuff that is said about her is absolutely vile.

OoopsOhNo · 13/07/2023 06:58

I've only recently found out what Tattle is (the only social media I have is MN and WhatsApp). I was quite shocked by the content tbh (but I am probably being naive).

However, in my opinion, I wish there was more discussion about the harms certain influencers cause (without the out and out vitriolic spewing of Tattle). Although I understand the motives of the #BeKind movement, it has some serious flaws - there are some things we shouldn't accept in the name of "kindness"

Because mumsnet is censored and only certain favoured ideas of baa baa variety are welcome.
Tattle's ethos is to call sheep behaviour things like this out.
Them's the rooolz.

This.

I like tattle and if anyone wants a code to join, pm me

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 13/07/2023 07:01

Remember Mumsnet got taken to court some years ago for libel due to a thread printed about SWMNBN. So since then they’ve probably been a lot more careful.

YukoandHiro · 13/07/2023 07:01

Shitegeist · 12/07/2023 21:58

Yes but contempt of court is a crime. Mumsnet don’t allow discussion of those issues because they risk legal action. Why doesn’t Tattle have the same concerns? Why isn’t it shut down?

This isn't contempt of court. There is no active criminal investigation or charge.
It's libel. Is TattleUS headquartered? Because the US doesn't have effective libel laws due to the first amendment. Which is why you get loads of libel cases imported over here.

DrSbaitso · 13/07/2023 07:04

Tattle is like an inverse MN. Posters are vicious about public figures but extremely supportive and friendly among themselves. You'll see things about public figures that would never stand here, but you won't be called a cunt, a melt or a moral inferior by another user.

OoopsOhNo · 13/07/2023 07:05

@Antoninus do you mind me asking what you like about it? I keep finding myself drawn back to it (although not a member) but there are bits which make me really "uncomfortable" like a PP said. I am so conflicted about it!

Exactly this. Users are so much more supportive of each other over there. And the moderation is very good without being heavy handed. Any time I've reported anything (i.e. a troll or a rare incident of a user slagging off another user) it's been removed almost immediately.

meddysam · 13/07/2023 07:17

Does tattle get millions in advertising?

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 13/07/2023 07:18

Bringonthepitchforks · 12/07/2023 22:55

Is tattle hosted in the UK?

It's sailed too close to the wind with a lot of stories I'm surprised it's still running!

No it is hosted in the USA and not subject to the same laws.

It might be vile but is it true? Some threads do gp a bit overboard but they are very good at calling out truthfully wrong doings by celebs and "influencers". She might be your friend doesn't mean some of it isn't true!

ElFupacabra · 13/07/2023 07:21

It's a cesspit.
So is MN tbf

ToxicBiennial · 13/07/2023 07:27

Mumofsend · 12/07/2023 21:58

It hasn't caught up with the tattle owners yet.

This.
Tattle is still largely unknown and ‘the authorities’ haven’t caught up with it yet. It exists in a land of its own at the moment.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/07/2023 07:28

What does SWMNBN stand for please?

BroomHandledMouser · 13/07/2023 07:30

@DrSbaitso what a crock of shit.

Ages ago there was a woman on here who lost her daughter, it got picked up by Tattle and they completely and utterly ripped the piss out of her. THE most vile thing I’ve ever read in my life.

PremiumPackaging · 13/07/2023 07:31

There are threads on there about MN. I find it quite loser behaviour that people spend time on MN and then dash to threads on Tattle to mock the MN threads.

They regularly mock people’s outfits from the style and beauty section here.

I looked at Tattle for a few days, felt dirty and didn’t go back. A website setup for the whole purpose of being unpleasant it seems. I am no saint but Tattle is definitely
not for me.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 13/07/2023 07:31

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/07/2023 07:28

What does SWMNBN stand for please?

She who must not be named.

ArcticSkewer · 13/07/2023 07:32

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/07/2023 07:28

What does SWMNBN stand for please?

That's good old Gina, or She Who Must Not Be Named.

She sued the site, possibly also individual posters, for defamation. She certainly highlighted individual posters (usernames) in the national press.

LizBennet · 13/07/2023 07:35

I like Tattle, I stay off the celebs and zelebs threads though.
I see way worse trolling on Mumsnet.
