This is already in the public domain .

I see a lot of negative comments about police and some of it , rightly so.

But this sums up for me what the job is about .
And why normal everyday men and women , like me , join the police service .

The bravery shown here is commendable .

Thanks for taking the time to watch .

Some of these responses remind me of the responses to my line of work...

There are many, many amazing Police officers from all walks of life, who do their best in with the state of the Police Forces in general. There are bad apples and those who abuse their power. There are higher ups who allow it. But the majority know and recognise this and try their best to be the best they can in their role. We all still call them in a time of need.

I'm a senior care assistant. Many many people, even on Mumsnet imply we are mostly shit at our job and it's a role for lazy and uneducated people who simply don't care, yet they give us their family members and loved ones to look after.

Your job will be one of the most sought after jobs in not many years when loads of industries are wiped out.

I have never called the Police but I am very grateful they’re there. There are bad ones in every single job.

Leastsaidsoonestscrewed · 12/07/2023 21:38

@ForeverFriendsAndPierrot

What the police did to us was vile, but how dare I be angry. Got it.

I've worked in housing for 30 years. Workers I've know have gone through every single thing in that video. Ditto nurses, paramedics and some fire fighters. Social workers, shit even Council employees.

It's rough, it's traumatising, it's dangerous and people in those jobs are brave.

In only one of those professions have I seen widespread accepted misogyny, racism, domestic violence one of the highest rates, and this will to forgive terrible behaviour because of the rigours of the job. I don't know what selection, training and support is missing. I do know it is missing.

I'm going to
Doubt however that housing officers have had to deal with such circumstances, and bring them to a peaceful conclusion while getting stabbed , putting out a fire and arresting a man armed with a knife whose holding it to his ex partners throat whilst she holds her two young children in her arms .

Two of my colleagues are nominated for the national bravery awards.
They disarmed a suspect at the scene of a double murder .

Both women . Suspect male .

Those slagging off the police, are you going to hesitate phoning these racist, homophobic pigs if you are in trouble? I thought not.

They just don’t turn up around here. I have phoned them in the past, they didn’t come even though somebody was having the shit kicked out of them by 5 other people, directly outside my window. I’ve been told to fuck off (in those exact words) for trying to report a crime.

No, I wouldn’t bother ringing tbh. They make it extremely clear they don’t want to know. They do seem to find time to hassle literal primary school children in the local playground though.

DoristheDuchess · 12/07/2023 21:41

I'm sure there are good police officers out there and for them it must be soul destroying to be tarred with the same brush, but it's mind blowing that over 90 police officers/staff were convicted of criminal offences last year alone.

How can our police force maintain credibility when this seems to be a recurring theme.

Patting you on the back is great but there's so much work to be done to restore faith in our broken police force first.

Women are now afraid to be approached by a lone policeman for fear of being raped or murdered. That is just unacceptable.

More than 90 police staff were found guilty of crimes last year, data shows

Figures show 68 officers and 25 staff in England and Wales were found guilty of crimes including sexual offences and violence against the person

Yes actually I will never contact them again afterwards they did to me and my family when we were targeted because of DS disability.

So stuff that patronising attitude somewhere dark and moist.

So, if someone was burgling your house with you & your family in there, you’d just sit there, not ringing anyone!? Hmmm….

baggiesmalls · 12/07/2023 21:42

No call handler on the end of a 999 phone line is ever going to tell the reporting person to fuck off

It's a recorded line for starters .

Someone's nose is growing .

This was uniformed police officers stationed in Brixton town centre, on a Saturday night. Obviously not 999.

Leastsaidsoonestscrewed · 12/07/2023 21:45

@baggiesmalls

I genuinely hope you never have the experience I've had which will destroy your naive faith.

But some basic human empathy might help.

baggiesmalls · 12/07/2023 21:46

Can't speak for the met . I'm not in the met and wouldn't be right now for all the tea in China or the London weighting .

Always ring 999 as its call handlers , on a recorded line , who create a log and dispatch officers

Not excusing this.., but only 68 were police officers and not civilian staff. 150000 ish in the police in the UK. That's a pretty low percentage.

There are as many doctors commiting crimes and yet noone suggests you shouldn't visit the doctor when needed.

When my partner joined he was on less per hour than he would be had he worked in a supermarket.

You can hmm all you like. Or you can accept that some people have very very good reasons never to let the police into their home and family ever again.
Like a few determinedly closed minded posters here it seems only experience will school you.

WeetabixTowels · 12/07/2023 21:50

OK it then why is there so much rampant racism, sexism and homophobia and why are so many of your colleagues sex offenders?

A good example does not cancel out the very serious and valid concerns people have about police forces and this ‘RESPECT US’ attitude that come from individual officers really doesn’t do much to help the cause

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 12/07/2023 21:51

Well this thread isn't about your 'experiences' @Leastsaidsoonestscrewed

Op....majority DO have respect for your profession. The dedication is much appreciated

baggiesmalls · 12/07/2023 21:51

Jesus I'm not asking for respect- I'm in the job for that .

Did you watch the video ?

@Leastsaidsoonestscrewed it’s very interesting that you talk about “determinedly closed minded posters”…….

Papernotplastic · 12/07/2023 21:53

It’s not ‘a few bad apples.’ That just doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. It’s dozens and dozens of them and an environment where their attitudes are tolerated and even encouraged and no one speaks out.

That doesn’t mean that the police can’t do some brilliant work on a daily basis. We have a police force that are trained to de-escalate situations. The killing of the teenager in France recently by armed French police made me appreciate how much more professional and capable our police are. I’ve never seen our police, armed or unarmed, not take proper control of a situation and let it escalate like that.

It’s possible to appreciate some of the things they do and not have faith in them as an institution. I wouldn’t look to them for anything more than a crime reference number for an insurance claim. I wouldn’t report an assault, rape or sexual assault to them unless it was by an absolute stranger and I was stone cold sober.

Leastsaidsoonestscrewed · 12/07/2023 21:53

@ForeverFriendsAndPierrot we're supposed to watch and worship, but no contrary voices can be raised? Gosh.
Closed minds as I said.

I work with many many lesbian and gay officers .
I don't see homophobia. It's widely accepted that many of my colleagues are gay and I can honestly say no one bats an eyelid .

Misogyny- again my force is equal in numbers of women to men . It would be a brave man who showed misogyny where I work . Women outnumber the men in my dept.

Fingers crossed & good luck in not getting burgled, run over etc. you’ll just have to sit there all proud while they’re ransacking your house.

Of course we all have the option to ring for help or not. You’re entitled to your opinion, as am I.

KateJohns · 12/07/2023 21:56

I'm trying to word this well...

Just because one cop is bad doesn't mean we should view all cops as bad, but, just because one cop is good and brave, doesn't mean we should judge all cops as good and brave.

I've seen bus and taxi drivers threatened, a taxi driver have a would-be rider kick his car. I've worked in retail and been sworn and spat at. I've worked in pubs and had men touch me inappropriately on shift. That police officers get treated badly is in common with many other workers.

Doctors and firefighters save lives every day. Mountain Rescue and RNLI volunteers save lives unpaid. The police do not have a monopoly on being heroes.

Yet we don't hear of bus and taxi drivers, retail and hospitality workers, doctors, firefighters, or MR and RNLI volunteers using the power to arrest that is invested in them by virtue of their jobs to rape and murder, because these people don't have the power of arrest. The police's ability to arrest gives officers a lot of power that the rest of us do not have and it is right to hold them to account over their abuse of those powers. That the police get treated badly or save lives doesn't negate the need to hold them to account, nor does it invalidate the very real and justified fear that many Black people and women have of the police.

Leastsaidsoonestscrewed · 12/07/2023 21:59
