I've never mentioned the Sun.

My issue as a licence payer is with his behaviour.

You’re another ‘I pay his salary’ person aren’t you.

As another poster asked - do you ask your binman how he spends his money? Your GP? Your MP?

Ask yourself why the mum went to the BBC and not the police

The mum went to the police in April and to the BBC in May, read the timeline. What would you have done as a parent of a nearly adult or young adult child addicted to drugs upon discovery of what's been going on?

WildUnchartedWaters · 12/07/2023 21:16

@halfpintshandypants - wow. Just wow. I would like to think you are young and naive.

Please go and research Hillsborough before writing things like that.

Certainly not the sun.

WildUnchartedWaters · 12/07/2023 21:17

@Willyoujustbequiet just because he presents the news on a channel you pay for, he doesnr account to you for his non criminal behaviour.

RedStef1983 · 12/07/2023 18:34

I don’t really care. People buy and sell sex pictures all the time. Everyone involved was of legal age and consenting. I don’t get why it’s a big deal.

Exactly. I'm just p'd off I didn't get 35 k for mine 😂

Ilikeskinnyjeans · 12/07/2023 21:18

@Dovetail40
i completely agree with you the hypocrisy of the sun newspaper is extraordinary .

UncleRadley · 12/07/2023 21:19

@RaisinFlapjack that's fair. I do wonder whether he was suffering from a bipolar episode which caused a lack of inhibitions. And yes, it's complicated by this. But why are the people who have come forward all much younger? It feels like it's calculated behaviour, in that he's approaching people he feels it's more likely he could influence with money or with his position rather than men his own age who are less likely to be influenced to provide pictures etc by those means (and which is a completely different prospect.) It seems that the conversations with at least two people were instigated on instagram by random emojis. I suspect there is some more to come from people who have been contacted.

WildUnchartedWaters · 12/07/2023 21:17

Certainly not the sun.

What? I'm asking what would you have done if not going to the police and reporting to employer and you're banging on about The Sun? Yes, that final step was equally unwise and desperate maybe. But beforehand, what would you have done differently?

Doagooddeed · 12/07/2023 21:20

The Sun did a fab job getting this story out there. Men like this should not be protected. I have a lot of time for The Sun and contrary to opinion on here, they can’t just make stuff up whenever they feel like it

the idea the SUN is out there being the nations Social Worker is laughable, they'd sell their own mother to sex trafficking gang if it would either do down the BBC or the Labour party.

Yes they can make up stuff, IPSOS is owned & paid for by the industry themselves and as seen across multiple papers, will write whatever they want with impunity.

WildUnchartedWaters · 12/07/2023 21:20

I'm not banging on about anything. I wouldn't have gone to the sun. She did, her choice. But people are wise to question that.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2023 21:20

Blinky21 · 12/07/2023 21:14

@Willyoujustbequiet ahh so you don't mean legally, you just mean you've decided that based on the Sun reporting and no other evidence

Based on all the news reporting including from his own employer.

From what I gather its not been disputed by anyone that he did indeed pay a young person for sexual photos. So no, I haven't just decided. It's exploitation and wholly immoral.

CapEBarra · 12/07/2023 21:20

This is like watching vultures picking over the bones.

PriamFarrl · 12/07/2023 18:09

I agree. He was the face of so much of the Queen’s death, funeral and the Kings coronation.

The King who was very pally with Jimmy Saville?

Yeah, Huw’s really sullied that coronation.

WildUnchartedWaters · 12/07/2023 21:21

@halfpintshandypants that aside - numerous people have talked in depth of the sun calling them to tell them they are running a story, them saying its untrue or explaining the harm and them running it anyway.
That's before we talk about their corruption.

Young adult child?

The adult was 20 when the mum went to the papers.

my mother was married and had a child by then. Nobody was calling her a young adult child.

Doing his job now apparently means you cannot have any form of life or make any mistakes and are answerable to the public, don't you know?

A lawyer representing the young person in question, who was not named, told the BBC earlier this week that "nothing inappropriate or unlawful has taken place between our client and the BBC personality." The lawyer said the allegations reported in The Sun were "rubbish."

So even the accusers lawyer says it's tosh !

Huw Edwards named by wife as BBC presenter accused of sexual misconduct; police say no crime committed

Edwards, 61, is one of Britain's best-known and most authoritative news broadcasters, lead anchor on the BBC's nighttime news and the face of its election coverage.

Whilst this is morally questionable and as yet it is not known if there has been a criminal offence, what really stands out is the lack of care for the young person at the centre.

Their parent has put this in the public domain without their consent and we are only getting the parent's version. There is a lot of speculation that this young person is vulnerable, if an addict they probably are but they can also be manipulative. It is also very odd that the parents insist that the young person's addiction is because of the money, it is usually the other way. Having worked with addiction and then child protection/specialising in addiction for nearly 20 years the thing that worries me most is the parents of this young person. They are apparently estranged so their actions are really questionable . I have worked in child protection for nearly 2 decades, fractured families, drug addictions, etc are pretty standard. Even the most conflicted family with several issues can get to the point we can have a family group conference.

I am not dismissing what has happened, that a person is held to certain standards within their workplace, and if it happens to be the BBC you really have no come back.

Interested in your opinion:

Given the 'facts' (not speculation/embellishment) of what we know from the Sun/mainstream - do you think it all adds up? £35,000 and 'only' one picture in all that time? Seems rather odd arrangement to me.

Then there is the report from another saying 3 payments were made, and a visit outside lockdown and all he wanted was a cup of tea. Eh?

Am I being naive or have I missed a meeting somewhere?

I'm choosing my words carefully, and this is ONLY my own inner thoughts - it sounds more to me that he was interacting with these people to buy drugs for himself. I've not seen anyone else suggest this, and I hope that's not because I shouldn't be saying what I think out loud. it just makes more sense, and his mental health issues could also be related to this.

As he is employed by our national broadcasting service for which I'm a licence payer he is absolutely accountable.

TheLifeofMe · 12/07/2023 21:23

I was shocked but the police said there will be no charges and the press should focus on real news. Not some presenter paying for pornographic photos. There's more pressing issues. Boris for one and this phone he should have handed in for the covid inquiry on Monday.

MsFogi · 12/07/2023 18:17

So will the papers now start talking about the George Osborne wedding email then or have they succeeded in burying that under Huw?

I'm really put out that it wasn't covered at the weekend- a bit of Wimbledon and coverage of George Osbornes ruined wedding would have been so enjoyable!

Blinky21 · 12/07/2023 21:24

@Willyoujustbequiet you've decided on everyone's behalf it was exploitation that's fine

PurplePansy05 · 12/07/2023 21:25

The Sun definitely published it and blown it up on purpose to damage the BBC. HE is collateral here. However, there appears to be consensus from all sides that he paid a significant sum of money to a vulnerable person in return for sexual photos. Nobody's contested this. It might not be a criminal offence like the police said, but it doesn't mean it's right and it shouldn't be accepted.
