I'm actually shocked.

This is a very telling quote:

Broadcaster Jon Sopel, the BBC’s former North America editor, described the situation as “awful and shocking” and hit out at some of the reaction to this story.
He said Huw Edwards was not guilty of any criminality but had “perhaps a complicated private life” which no longer felt “very private”.

ninetieseyebrows · 12/07/2023 19:21

I was kind of put off him a year or so ago when I listened to this episode of Fortunately https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001748n. Doesn't come across as a particularly warm and friendly type from this interview. I thought anyway.

BBC Radio 4 - Fortunately... with Fi and Jane, 232. Le Roman de la Rose, with Huw Edwards

Fi and Jane are joined by newsreading icon Huw Edwards.

Really feel bad imagine paying for prostitution with public funds

funding a drug addicts habit to keep him quite getting him the same lawyers the queen had

then letting your colleagues take the blame and them having to make stamens

imagine lying to your wife about being gay also being unfaithful then booking yourself into hospital and claiming victim status

how sad for him

Wow you know a lot about the story!
To clarify your statements as I am a little confused....

Really feel bad imagine paying for prostitution with public funds

  1. I didn't know these young people were now "prostitutes" and didn't know you knew how he was paid them?

funding a drug addicts habit to keep him quite getting him the same lawyers the queen had

  1. you know the young person factually then? You know they are male and Huw Edwards was the only person responsible in the young persons life to fund drug habits. No accountability to parents or other drug services available. You know Huw Edwards funded the young persons lawyer as well have you see his outgoings then?

then letting your colleagues take the blame and them having to make stamens

  1. I didn't know when being hospitalised for mental health issues you would be focused on social media to see who the general public would be accusing next

imagine lying to your wife about being gay also being unfaithful then booking yourself into hospital and claiming victim status

  1. so you can confirm the young people were male and you can factually confirm Huw Edwards is gay? Did he tell you then.

So he booked himself into Hosptial, no idea how do you know do you know the Hosptial? I thought either hospitalised treatment for mental health issues meant you can also be sectioned but hey I clearly do not know the facts like you do.

You must know Huw Edwards very well and know the young people very well as your have very clear views on what has happened. Maybe the police should interview you?

MrsMcisaCt · 12/07/2023 19:22

Everyone on here is assuming he's guilty of wrong doing. The BBC haven't finished their investigation yet. The police say he's done nothing illegal. The first young person said he's done nothing wrong. We don't really know yet, do we?

Hohofortherobbers · 12/07/2023 19:23

And he left his poor humiliated wife to make his statement, the arsehole. She should wash her hands of him.

Spidey66 · 12/07/2023 19:23

Charlize43 · 12/07/2023 19:07

I overheard... hard not to, some woman on the bus shouting about how The BBC Presenter was Huw Edwards. She kept saying that she wanted to know if he was a friend of Dorothy's - I don't watch the BBC so I don't know who she was on about? Who's Dorothy?

Are you for real ?

But in case this is really an honest question, Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz was played by Judy Garland, who is well known as a gay icon and was sympathetic towards gay people when it wasn’t the done thing to do. A ‘friend of Dorothy’s’ means a gay person.

They’ve not raped anyone so what they do it’s their own business

Is the bar really this low for men? Really?

It really is. Really really is. We’ve done a full 360 on recognising that men using other people for sex in any capacity is a fowl thing. That it comes from a position of male privilege and power. Because you can go online and sell your soul legally from the age of 18 (18 ffs) it’s no longer seedy Jons but legitimate clients of hard workers who apparently know ‘exactly what they’re doing’. God it’s fucked up.

SofaFromRomania · 12/07/2023 19:24

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2023 19:15

It is absolutely our business.

He is a highly paid figure employed by our national broadcaster that we all pay towards. A 61 year old married man who paid vulnerable teenagers for sexual photos.

It's disgusting that anyone would turn a blind eye to this.

That's illegal. We've been told he has done nothing illegal.

That should be foul not foul. Cracking headache to blame…

Favouritefruits · 12/07/2023 19:24

Huw met the 17 year old on a website which is for over 18s only, the 17 year old must of lied to get on the site and Huw must of thought he was 18 or more, it’s a bit disgusting and dirty but two adults can do what they like.

PollyThePixie · 12/07/2023 19:24

MissPop · 12/07/2023 19:14

@PollyThePixie

Yep 🙌….. didn’t turn them into sleazeballs. They were very under functioning mind and most certainly wouldn’t have been able to address to the nation that the queen had died.

Please…. Just stop 🤦‍♀️.

It’s you who needs to stop using your relatives as a means to propping up your posts. You should be ashamed of yourself for using their situation the way you did/are. But at least you showed yourself up for being completely ignorant about mental health as well as being someone who thinks nothing of using a relatives awful situation when it suits you.

legallyblond · 12/07/2023 19:24

But surely many or all of these things / the views on here can be simultaneously true….

I expect he is having a genuine mental health crisis. He has a history of severe depression and this frenzy would probably trigger a crisis in any of us if we were in his shoes.

Surely we all also accept that even if all of this is legal (as the police have confirmed), it’s all gross, an ugly pattern of behaviour, and contrary to the weekly churchgoing family man news anchor persona that has been presented until now. I think any of us with kids would take the view that if our 18/19/20 year old child was in this position with a prominent and wealthy 61 year old, we’d feel like that was “abusive” and wrong even if not illegal. There’s no point saying there’s no proof. The BBC have seen some of the nasty texts etc and they will have taken real care to verify before saying they’d seen them and confirmed they were from his number. We can I think trust some reporting, surely?!

It’s also true I think that the media frenzy is totally blown out of proportion and likely a living nightmare for every single person involved. It’s doing real damage. Let’s hope no one suffers more harm…

It’s also probably the case that if the Sun went ahead and implied criminal behaviour with no proof of that particular aspect, there’ll be trouble for them. Arguably that was the really shocking bit.

But it might also be true that if his salary is paid via our license fee and part of his position / role is his upstanding persona, there’s an element of public interest in exposing this, even if they way it was all done by the awful, awful Sun was appalling.

Finally, we all know it’s true that in general rich white men get away with and are forgiven by society for horrible things. We shouldn’t pander to that and start saying the much younger people involved in this are somehow to blame….

Laughingstock1991 · 12/07/2023 19:25

Honestly I hope Rupert Murdoch rots in the fires of hell and that his shitty newspaper burns to the ground too.

The net have said no criminal activity and now Huw is has had a mental breakdown and lost his career. No one knows his side either.

Absolutely FUCK THE SUN!

Butchyrestingface · 12/07/2023 19:25

SofaFromRomania · 12/07/2023 19:24

That's illegal. We've been told he has done nothing illegal.

Is it?

What if the teenager was 18 or 19? Still illegal?

CrackerAndPudding · 12/07/2023 19:25

Thatgirl1981 This story was broken at a specific time, for a specific reason.

Regardless of how you view people who pay for and make money from Only Fans, there is absolutely an element of media manipulation in all of this.

Gettingbysomehow · 12/07/2023 19:26

Have some compassion? Yeah for the victims and for his poor wife and 5 children. He can do one.

thelionthewitchtheaudacityofTHISbitch · 12/07/2023 19:26

SofaFromRomania · 12/07/2023 18:55

He didn't break any laws. The police say he has done nothing wrong. His wife and family are supporting him. He did his job really well. It isn't our business.

It is our business. I have a 17 year old male DC who is vulnerable. I also wouldnt be standing by and watching a well connected much older man groom my DC. I dont need the momeny so wouldnt accept any, but fucking hell would be publicising and making damn sure everyone knew. As for the wife - she knew didnt she? From that statement she knew and did nothing, despite their 5 children.

Yep1234 · 12/07/2023 19:27

I think the fact that the police have concluded not to press charges it suggests that they were not 17 when this happened or there were other factors at play.

ultimately you can not make, view, send or receive images of a child under the age of 18 which suggest a sexually explicit nature. A child under the age of 18 can also not do any of the above.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 12/07/2023 19:27

And yet this thread has 11+ pages (11 at time of typing this) of comments in the 1 and a half hours it's been up (plus 3 other threads trending) and the only thread about Boris not compling with a high court order has 30 replies in the 18 odd hours it's been up.

It's clear the public don't give a fuck about how the country is run, or the behaviour of their elected offices, in general, and especially not when a juicy bit of gossip is on offer instead.

Of course you did. And if you did, googling would have given you the answer in less time than it took you to type out that post.

Ffs!

Dire

Talapia · 12/07/2023 19:27

It is sleazy, but at this point in time there appears to be no evidence a crime has been committed.

There is a feeling of baying crowds who will only be content with his suicide and this is quite disturbing. We do not live in medieval times and seem to have learned nothing from the witch hunt/armchair detectives we see on social media.

We are bizarre as a species. I do not understand how the Radford family are admired by some, and have made wealth through social media and a constant stream of kids. She was a child having sex and became pregnant as a result.

I also do not understand why Boris Johnson has got away scot free with breaking his own covid rules by claiming to not understand them. People died, whilst he clearly didn't give a fuck about families saying goodbye to loved ones, so long as he had a good time.

Different issues I know, but the way people are played and play into social media , it's too much like a Black Mirror episode.

Iolani · 12/07/2023 19:27

Really shocked!
No I don’t do social media, all I do is MN and I wouldn’t read witch hunting speculation, but as his wife has now made an official statement then I will believe it.

He’s been in hospital for sometime and has had depression for years apparently.
News states police have confirmed there has been no criminal activity. Still don’t understand why the parents went to the BBC and not the police in the first place….maybe they were hoping to make some money out of this….who knows.
I hope he gets the support he needs.
