My boobs, my business!

I see loads of bra size arguments on here, usually an individual is torn to shreds for stating she either has a 34 band at size 8-10 and is (god forbid it!) comfortable!
How dare she?? Doesn't she know that bra sizing is an SCIENCE that every woman needs to conform to??
Strangers on the internet know far more than you about what band size you ought to wear, and if you claim to be a 34A then you must be fooling yourself.

What the heck is all that about? It's almost militant. Not all bodies are the same. Some women feel better in a slacker band, and there is no perfect standard or science for comfort.
It is up to the individual how they choose to dress their boobs. But 'personal preference' seems to get a lot of people irate for some reason. There's this persistent myth that all women are wearing the wrong bra size, where almost every bra or boob thread gets derailed by.

Why are other women so freakily invested in the band size of other people? If men were demanding our bra choices were all wrong there's be a justifiable uproar. But for me the same applies to women - mind your own business unless the poster has asked for an opinion.

So currently the dogma (and it is fucking dogma) that most women are wearing the wrong bra seems to be acceptable. I have seen images of perfectly lovely silhouettes where the reaction has been extreme - she MUST be wearing the wrong size (God the hOrror!!!) even though she looks fantastic.

Back the hell off!
My body, my bra, my business. If my cup size choice startles you, maybe go for a walk in nature and get the blood pressure back down. Surely IANBU? Grin

Nothing wrong with wearing a size of bra that makes you comfortable.

Same as if you are a size 12 and you prefer to wear size 16 clothes, totally your business, but you are still a size 12 and if you are wanting to talk about sizes for whatever reason it just confuses if you say you (rather than your clothes) are a size 16 when you clearly are not.

empatheticpretzel · 12/07/2023 14:56

And I have never seen a big woman with naturally small boobs.

You must not leave the house much. Plenty of plus size pears. Pear is the most common shape in the west.

And based on this anecdotal experience, you think this means that slim women can't have large breasts?

TheMarzipanDildo · 12/07/2023 14:59

Rainbowshit · 12/07/2023 13:41

Perhaps because for some of us it has been a bit life changing finding the correct bra size. I looked like I'd dropped a stone in weight and felt so much confident and better about myself.

This. I do try not to be too evangelical because I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but the smaller band bigger cup thing was really good for my back. I think it probably works better if you’ve got bigger boobs.

Boopydoo · 12/07/2023 14:59

empatheticpretzel · 12/07/2023 14:50

I haven't read the replies but on the unlikely chance this hasn't been mentioned, thin woman are unlikely to have enormous boobs. Boobs are made from fat. If you lose a lot of weight your boobs will get smaller.

I was a 20 year old with an hourglass (size 10 waist) figure I was still a 30H/ HH. My boobs were massive on a tiny frame. Now they are a bit more massive on a bigger frame admittedly, but your assertion that thin women are unlikely to have enormous boobs is ridiculous. It happens.

Most women do wear a band size that's too big

How do you know?
Isn't it all a bit weird?
It's like the tit police.

Hahaha! I love the idea of the Tit Police.

"Will you pull in over here, Madam. I suspect you are wearing the wrong band and have to inform you that is a criminal offence under section 25 of the Boobs act. Now, if you would just like to put your tits in here..."

wutheringkites · 12/07/2023 14:58

yes, ones that are real anyway

wholivesondrurylane · 12/07/2023 15:01

Soverymuchfruit · 12/07/2023 14:49

@wholivesondrurylane The style isn't the point. Whatever the style, if I buy a bra with a 32 back, the back will be 32 in size. And I find that uncomfortably tight. So I buy one with the back 36. Then I am comfortable.

But why would you wear the wrong size by choice? It's weird.

In what way is it weird to choose clothing size based on comfort?

are your clothes all a size 12 (for example)?
Or are you like most of us buying anything from 8-10 to 14-16 because shops can't get their shit together?

Why should it be different with bras? Different style might need different size, but that's not what we mean at all when we say many women wear the wrong size. No one is saying you must stick rigidly to one strict size and that's it.

You should be comfortable in what fits you perfectly with bras, not wearing the least uncomfortable.

empatheticpretzel · 12/07/2023 15:00

But it’s proportional to your body. So if I said I was thin with large breasts I would mean large for my frame, not large relative to a woman wearing a size 26.

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 12/07/2023 15:03

MySoCalledWife · 12/07/2023 13:18

People are just a bit enthusiastic about their new found knowledge

I’ve never found any malice on the boob threads

your bra your business, yes but by talking about your bra on Mumsnet you are making it a public conversion 😁

I find that with a lot of information now that I’m fifty. Younger people seem to think that everything they learn is new, as if we weren’t measuring our boobs in exactly the same way before they were even born.

Don’t get me started on young dentists and their enthusiastic flossing lectures. Yes dear, I know all about flossing because a. I’m not a fucking moron and b. I’ve been told about it twice a year for the past 35 years! 🙄

wholivesondrurylane · 12/07/2023 15:03

I love the uproar and the MN bingo screaming "misogyny" because, shock horror, some women like to wear something not only comfortable but which fits and looks good. But for some weirdos, looking good doesn't fit with their concept of feminism 🙄.

DahliaMacNamara · 12/07/2023 15:04

They're right to an extent. I wear the same band size now as a fiftysomething fatso as I did in my early twenties, weighing half nothing with a 22 inch waist. I didn't feel there was anything wrong with my bras, but I knew no better. I've never worn a smaller band size. I just went up the alphabet with the cups. Only ever got measured when I was pregnant, by a lady who tut-tutted at me. Even she could see that at seven months gone I wasn't about to start looking for something tighter to wear.
And now, I do something possibly even less acceptable than you, OP. My bras are the 'right' band size now, but in a post-lockdown world I can't be arsed with the tightness. So I bought some bra extenders, for the days when my tits need to be in a socially approved position.

Peacoffee · 12/07/2023 15:05

@wholivesondrurylane But for some weirdos, looking good doesn't fit with their concept of feminism 🙄.

No the misogyny is the idea that you need a bra to "look good" and that apparently you can't look good if you don't wear one.
If someone wants to wear a bra every day they can crack on but I hate the idea that there is something wrong with the normal shape of a woman's breast.

Catspyjamas17 · 12/07/2023 15:06

Yes, I agree, OP. If your bra looks and feels good to you then it doesn't matter what someone else thinks.

I've given up with expensive sports bras as they are stupidly uncomfortable and complex to put on- I get trapped in them trying them on in the shop! And then they make you a horrible shape under what you are wearing.

People would tell me "It has to be tight" - personally I value breathing and don't worry if my breasts move slightly when I exercise, as long as it isn't uncomfortable. I just wear firm cropped top sports bras now, I can put them on over my head, so much better than trying to work out a stupid crossover strap system.

In fact I quite like cropped tops full stop and often wear a softer one instead of an underwire for regular use, and I'm a D cup.

I pretty much only buy Sainsbury's comfort lace bras and their sports bras and softer bras now as their sizing is reliable and the bras are good and value for money.

Boopydoo · 12/07/2023 15:06

bonfirebash · 12/07/2023 14:49

@Boopydoo have you tried Elomi? I wear the Matilda but if that fits you, basically I find every "plunge" shape (as described by them) by Elomi fits me too
So I wear Matilda, Kim, Brianna, sachi... they all fit perfectly

I have tried Elomi yes, sadly not found anything comfortable for all day. Mine are very full with little space in-between and always been flipping hard to accommodate. My poor shoulders are shot, it's time bra makers stepped up with some real answers for spreading the weight load. The red one that's a dream is a bravissimo rumba. I will look up the others you have listed too, thank you.

wutheringkites · 12/07/2023 15:08

@empatheticpretzel

So any woman who has breasts that are large in proportion to their weight has implants? Right.

Are you a man?

DogbertMcDogglesworth · 12/07/2023 15:08

I have a double cup chest and I've only ever worn Playtex cross your heart none wired bras. I don't care how old fashioned they are. They're comfortable and give great support, that's all I'm interested in.
Measuring for me however, goes like this....
I select a bra in my current size along with one smaller and one bigger. I go to the changing rooms, try them on and the best fitting one gets purchased. Easy.

Catspyjamas17 · 12/07/2023 15:09

Indeed. Or there is something wrong with your breasts if they are not wired up, scooped up, pushed forward and pushed up under your chin at all times.

ScruffGin · 12/07/2023 15:09

I made the mistake of going to bravissimo once, they were so tight they gave me indigestion! Back to my 34Es 😂

Cosyblankets · 12/07/2023 15:10

Who are all these people arguing with you about your bra size?
Can't say anyone has ever commented on mine

No and no. But women thin as sticks with balloons on their chest obviously have implants
